texags has their own Perriloux

The thing Proposition Joe is that the Aggies got some good recruits. They got Jake Matthews who is considered very highly as an OL and he chose A&M over Texas and USC. Also QB Matt Joeckel and DE Nehemiah Hicks both are promising as they got offers from an impressive list of schools besides the Aggies. And this is just three of them. Why not look at the good rather than the bad.?

partly because nelson was the "bell cow" of this class.

partly because we're so used to being downtrodden, that everyone focuses on the negative.

partly because we lost them last minute.

i agree though, we needed help on the lines and we got good help on the lines. what people fail to remember is that we also loaded up on LBs last year. also, wouldnt surprise me in the least if at least two of those true fish OL started this coming year.

losing nelson hurt, but we'll be ok.

Its easy BIll, the Nelson switch was newsworthy and unexpected. The OL we signed was celebrated when we got their commitment because those guys weren't lookign around.

Nelson was a roller coaster ride for 8 months and at the end of all the loops, twists, and turns you are left with nothing but a sick stomach.

Add in the fact that he was going to be the main focus of our defense, and you cna see why it hurts. TAMU has landed several high quality offensive players over the last few years (Goodson, Fuller, Michael, Gray, the OL in this class) but we haven't had a legit stud defensive recruit in about 6 years.

It was an unexpected kick squarely in the balls, by the single most important recruit in recent memory.

There are going to be reprecussions.

I agree with Bundy. The aggy defense has been AWOL for years now, more like the "Wrecked Crew" than the "Wrecking Crew" and consistently ranked in the bottom rungs of almost all categories. The trainwreck that was Franchione and the ongoing revolving door of DCs like Darnell and Kines has, I think, created the strong impression that a + m just can't get it right on the defensive side of the ball. If a + m is going to create emotional momentum based on its traditions, Shermie must rebuild his defense, which should naturally be more like Virginia Tech - a salty, lunch pail group of hard hitters. Instead, they have the Cream Puff Crew that folds/quits after getting hit in the mouth.

Nelson was a big-time commit who would have stood head and shoulders over any defensive recruit of recent memory. His very public humiliation of Shermie was a kick in the nuts and sends the message that a + m can't close the deal with stud recruits. The fact that he is a linebacker and gave Shermie and his linebacking tradition a wedgie shows that he is still a long way off defensively. Shermie has to roll up his sleeves and focus on kids who have a burning desire to play for him. If they want to look around, he's better off going after other kids.

There are a couple of theories I've seen offered up by some of the TAMU message boards, that I think have merit.

Theory #1--cheer for texas to pound ou every year at the RRS. The idea is that we are not going to be seen as ahead of Mack and company for a long time, so its OK to be behind them in the pecking order. However, if the sooners quit playing in BCS games, and winning conference titles, perhaps their ability to raid Texas for talent decreases. When ou was dominating Texas on the field the first half of the 2000s, Texas was still recruiting light out. Don't focus on Texas, instead focus on OU. TAMU needs OU to lose as many games as possible (RRS, Bedlam, tech etc...).

Theory #2--try to win a few head-to-head battles with Mack, but really lock up the Texas kids that (for whatever reason) Mack passes on. In 2010, Mack passed on a bunch of OL, some good LBs and DBs. We were able to land the OL, we missed on the LBs (Nelson, Lewis) and the DBs (Dixon, Stephenson, Loften, Evans, Muncie).

Theory #3--recruit for the 3-4 defense. Similar to what Leach was doing on offense, we need to do on defense. If we run a different defense that Texas does, we won't target the same kids. Running a 3-4, we need 6-2, 205 pound DE/LBs as OLBs. Muschamp is looking for bigger kids than that for his LBs. Guys that would be a DT in a 4-3 can be a DE in a 3-4. Since you can't beat Mack for those guys, go after guys that aren't on Mack's radar screen.

bundy, i think options 2 & 3 are more likely...i just dont see OU dropping that far off the radar while stoops is still around.

also, sherman has been going with option 4 too, which is to compete with recruits in lousiana as well.

I think getting back to topic - Corey Nelson - regarding those recruits who pull the old "hide the weeny" game. This kid is a douche for pulling what he did. The other kid, Fobbs, is a plain all out shithead, prick for the swap-a-fax routine. That **** needs to be put to a stop.

When recruits do this kind of crap, it only shows a lack of maturity and mentality. Div-I football has become big-time business and the old switch-a-roo game has run its

course.

Nelson and especially Fobbs should be reprimanded for their action and these kinds of antics are not appreciated, unless of course it happens to the Sooners on an annual basis. There'll always be exceptions and they're it.

I feel bad for ya aggy, for that crap. Best thing to do is let your boys show'em on the field what they're thought of back at the ranch. That and let it go. Let karma come and take care of your heavy work. That's exactly what we've done... and explains why you all are where you're at.

again, that's easy to say from the perspective of a horn fan who follows a program who gets whomever they want.

we're not at that place just yet. i dont think our coaches played this wrong at all. kid had been committed to us since last summer and gave every indication that he was signing with us, and we got burned at the last minute.

again, i'm sure that sherman will learn from this and move on.

Another thing that's sad is that parents have to sign the LOI. That means they allowed their kid to play this game. If my kid was trying to pull the kind of b.s. that Perrilioux, Nelson, Fobbs, Meachem etc. did, my wife and I would have come down on him like a ton of bricks. Loser parents... loser kids.

that can get messy too wally.

two years ago we had a WR named sedrick johnson who was verbally commited to us. his mom, who he lived with, wanted him at A&M, and his dad wanted him at iowa state. dad refused to sign the LOI to A&M and he ended up at iowa state.

yup. you're right.

part of the reason that everyone felt confident about getting corey to sign with us was that his parents really liked A&M. vocally talking about the program, etc.

then we started hearing that his dad was partial to OU.

oh well.

you're probably right, and i'd imagine that sherman is going to be quick to pull the trigger on those commits that still want to take visits.

on the flip side, brandon jackson tripped to alabama and still ended up signing with A&M.

i think as we get better, there are going to be a number of kids who want to come our way. i think also that recruiting for the 3-4, as bundy said, will have its advantages too, in that we'll be looking for different players than you guys are. also, with deruyter at the helm, i can very much see us going after more athletes, and spinning offensive players to DB, LB, and DT similar to how TCU runs their program.

i'm confident that sherman wont overreact to this--rather he'll react apprpriately and to the right level. surprisingly enough he's actually proven to be a pretty formidable recruiter--he's picked up the game pretty quickly. this is just another lesson for him.

Spinning offensive players to D is a good idea...as long as you continue to take a half-dozen RBs every year.

If all it takes to sway Nelson's mind is a delay, an understandable one, given that the DC was just hired, in bringing in a linebacker coach, then Nelson never was that firmly committed, and agricultural is better off without him.

I agree with you Prop that the Shermanator's recruiting learning curve has been pretty steep, and he doesn't seem to be shedding that many tears over Nelson's change of heart. aggy will be okay in the long run, and it will be fun the first time Nelson has to play at Kyle Field.

bennett never committed to texas.

the only school he gave a verbal committment to was miami. he decommitted in the fall of his senior year and basically was wide open at that point.
