Tex Mex

My wife and I cemented our relationship with late night happy hour queso at Chuy's, and my old roomate and I were 2 of the first customers when the place opened. Over the years we have eaten at Popagallos, Rosies, the place on S. Lamar that I can never think of the name, Amayas, the expensive interior Mexico place on Oltorf... I always end up going back to Chuys, although I now prefer the suburban locations since I'm old and not questing for coeds. The question is: What have I missed? What is the place that I have to try? We live about 1/2 way between Austin and San Antonio, so we have some great chooces near home, but when I/we are in Austin, we want to try something new. Suggestions?

Enchiladas Y Mas on Anderson Lane is the complete shiztnitz. Best cheese enchiladas in the history of mankind.

Las Manitas on Congress is less Tex Mex than interior Mexican/Tex Mex, but its freaking incredible.

I concur with Enchiladas Y Mas. I can go in there for lunch, have the cheese enchilladas plate, two fairly potent margaritas and get out for $12, tip included.

I really, really, really like the queso at El Sol y La Luna on So. Congress. We go their for late breakfast on the weekends. We get the queso to start. I get the posole and a picadillo taco. Heaven.

Is Matt's El Rancho the place on S. Lamar you're trying to think of? Their Bob Armstrong dip kicks!

I also like the Diablo Sol Food from Maudie's.

What's not to like about queso?!!!

i have made up my mind that the hernandez enchiladas at maudies on south lamar are heaven on earth, but i have never tryed the enchiladas at enchiladas y mas, just the migas. i will defenitly give it a try.

god i love tex mex. i have no idea how it isnt served at every restruarant in the world.

"What's not to like about queso?!!!" This quote should be on the back of a t-shirt. Love ench y mas and Maudie's. Always have to get my Maudie's fix when back in Austin.

You have already achieved the holy grail with Chuy's. Just realize all other pale in comparison. I too judge all others against Chuy's and have never found another in the ball park.

I personally think Chuy's is half *** tex mex. Of course many will disagree, but there are 20 other places I would go in Austin for Tex Mex before I would consider Chuy's

I have rarely met anyone over the age of 22 that thinks Chuy's or El Arroyo are even in the 20 best Tex-Mex places in town. The ones that do typically have a rotation that looks something like Friday's, Chili's, Olive Garden, and Red Lobster.

I just today discovered Garibaldi's in a strip center on South Congress (just south of Ben White). I can't believe it's been there 5 years and I hadn't heard of it. It's got a lot of interior stuff on the menu, but we hit the Tex-Mex hard and heave today (Migas, Chicken Enchiladas and Cheese Enchiladas) for our group and were really impressed. It's a little pricey for what it is and service is kind of spotty, but the food was top shelf.

No doubt the TexMex cognescenti will have some reason to think I'm nuts, but I almost always enjoy my food at Nuevo Leon.

Green chile dishes and the chili relleno at Chuys rock. After that, it does not approach the top 10 in the city.

Nueveo Leon is solid, they have goat, that is worth some points in and of itself.

The original post referenced an "expensive place" on Oltorf. I assume that is Curras, which is awesome at that location. I refuse to believe the one on Burnet Road is even affiliated with the one down south. They're like night and day.

Migas at Onda. For lunch. With free wi-fi. Allsome.

La Fuentes off of Circle S road, one block east of Congress and William Cannon. Talk about hidden ... we've lived here for 2 years and just found it, and it rocks.

I always enjoy myself at Nuevo Leon. The food is solid, not great, but you add the margaritas and atmosphere and it's one of my favorites.

I suppose I have the same feeling for Matt's El Rancho

you are too old and lived in austin too long to have not experienced some great places - el azteca, la tapatia, matts, maudies, las manitas, guero's curra's, taco haven(?; cant remember place on s lamar). that should be enough to get you through the month.

You live 1/2 to SA? Go south, my friend. Venture into the West side or South Side inside Loop 410 and throw a rock. You will hit a place that is most likely better than 95% of what you will find in Austin. But here is a list of some well-known spots:

The original Blanco Cafe(on Blanco just below Hildebrand) right next to Chris Madrid's, best burgers anywhere but try the beanburger since this is a Tex-Mex thread.
Henry's Puffy Tacos(410/Bandera)
Los Barrios(Blanco just above Hildebrand)
downtown for Lunch: Lula's or Mexican Manhattan
La Fogata on Vance Jackson gets a lot of hype but I was not overly impressed. For late night migas(called chilaquiles here) and breakfast tacos, La Salsa on San Pedro.

There are so many great Tex-Mex places here you can almost not go wrong(general rule: stay inside the loop and off of the riverwalk).

Not to knock Chuy's, which is excellent "gringo" Tex-Mex and a really fun place(the original one at least). By the way, nobody mentioned Taqueria Vallarta(W.Cannon/S.Congress)... it is an excellent breakfast spot.

trkhorn, what do you think of Karam's in San Antonio? My father-in-law was raised in SA, and that's his favorite TexMex joint. I've only been once, and while the food was just OK, I had a good time.

As a native chilango, it took me a long time to come to terms with TexMex, but I have fully embraced the cuisine. After much searching in Austin, I have concluded that the most flavorful texmex joints in town are La Fuente, enchiladas y mas, and Juan in a million. Also, arredondos place on I-35 by st. David's ain't too bad either.
