Terrible week

No way to sugarcoat going 0-4.

We need to stop this. Begins with clutch hitting and stopping the big inning on defense.

Don't take ULaMon for granted. If you don't believe me, ask Nick Saban.

I hope this week is filled with *** chewings and wind sprints. Augie needs to good old school on their asses. Kansas...swept...really??? I'm gonna go puke.

championship teams find a way to win one run ball games. 3 losses we're just not getting it done at the plate and in the filed when we need it.

If there is a universal truth about Texas fans, it is that they always will see their team in the best light when they can. The reality of sports, particularly baseball, is that this approach to fandom will disappoint. This board and others, with Augie's encouragement believed that this was another national championship team. On the basis of what? High rankings by notoriously unreliable polls? The domination of teams that had not practiced outside before they got to Austin? A series win over a very suspect Stanford squad? None of these things were meaningful and shame on Augie for pretending that they were. Perhaps he was so interested in putting his personal problems behind him that he was willing to make the wins out to mean more than they did to keep the vultures at bay.

A very good friend of mine who is not a Texas fan but who knows a ton about college ball was delighted when Augie kept his job. His points were that only Augie would be able to keep the Horns down because he would not be able to survive in the new era of college ball. Keep in mind that he thinks Augie is a great fundamentals coach and one of the best bench coaches in the country. He thinks Augie is a terrible recruiter and I am starting to believe him. If you don't have the players you won't win the games and these players are simply not as good as those who play for our rivals. As to the recruiting, Augie is old school. To be certain, the new era of college baseball does not afford Texas the same advantages it had before the roster and scholarship size limits took effect. Augie's championship teams at CSF and here were always built on the idea that you offered 30 kids a year the opportunity to play for book scholarships. The first semester was essentially a try out period and then you cut loose the ones that did not rise to the top. We can debate the morality of this approach, but it was not uncommon here or on other campuses. In this state, this effect produced two advantages for Texas, we got the best and kept the others from getting the second best. Mark Johnson, when he was at A$M and Wayne Graham at Rice never followed this approach and honored the ships even when the players did not pan out. This worked against them under the old rules, but places them at a distinct advantage with the current limits. Augie's model does not work anymore. Successful College coaches need to be able to correctly judge talent and make wise decisions about who to offer. When you make the offer, they better come. This seems to be a real advantage for the private schools who are attracting kids who are interested in degrees. It is hard to argue, for example, with the talent level that Rice trots out year after year. Scouts tell me that they don't want to draft Rice signees because they are pretty certain that the kid is going to school. We've had some of that at Texas, but not as much. In short, with the limited scholarships, you can't afford to miss too often. I think that Rice and Aggie have missed less than Augie over the last few years and that is the reason that we are perceived as battling Baylor for third place in Texas. It might get better, but I think it is going to take a different approach to recruiting and I don't think that Augie has that long.

Championship teams don't become championship teams in the first month. Some start out great, but most become that during the season.

I can't figure out why everyone gets so bent out of shape this early. Please start these rants if its still happening at the end of April.

This kills me every year watching people jump on and off the bandwagon after early season losses or victories.

Only one thing matters in college baseball, is what happened in your final game.

I certainly wasn't implying I am off the 'bandwagon' or that I can't wait for football season, just simply saying that 0-4 was a terrible week.

We'll get it back.

Well this was a weekend that shall live in infamy.

However all we need is the hitting to come together. Guys are hot but not at the same time. A series of 1 run losses is bad but not catastrophic.

One run losses usually even out. I believe that is a pretty standard baseball theory. Except in some rare cases (usually not championship teams) teams really don't show an "ability to win one run games". If some team's stats show that they have a good number of one-run wins, that is nothing but luck most of the time.

We will also win some one run games soon.

The pitching has been quite good, though some cracks have come in the last few games. Not looking non-championship level yet. The bats going cold for 3-4 games is not a catastrophe either.

This team will go on another 13-2 type run again soon, and quite a few games will be close WINs for us too. Please stop the "sky is falling" posts.

If the bats remain cold for very long and our opponent's ERA does not improve to at least 4.5 or so (it has been under 3 lately), we won't be a championship team but would still be a very good team with the pitching we have seen so far..

The truth is that this team is probably not as bad as some here would like to believe and not as good as some would like to believe. We just went through this exact same scenario with the Basketball team. People thought they were looking at a #1 seed after a couple of early wins and then at the worst team ever put together after a couple of loses. The truth was, of course at the end of the season, somewhere in between.

Tecolote,

The only thing I can assume is that you know absolutely nothing about baseball and baseball recruiting, and you bought a line of ******** fed to you by your "friend".

First of all, Augie's involvement in UT recruiting begins and ends with his reputation as one of the best college baseball coaches in the history of the game. He is an arrrow in the quiver of Tommy Harmon and Skip Johnson when it comes to recruiting. "Come to Texas, kid. You can be a part of incredible tradition, play in one of the best facilities in the country, live in one of the most electric cities in the country, and learn from one of the greatest minds in the history of the game."

Augie does not get out and recruit. The classes that get signed are a result of Harmon and Johnson.

That said: Those two guys have been CHERRY PICKING this state for the last 5 years. They get almost any guy they want. And you want to talk about kids going to school instead of the draft - Taylor Jungmann and Austin Dicharry are certainly in that category for this class, and even though Kevin Keyes got drafted late two years ago, the Rangers made a hard push at him right before school started.

Talent is not a problem, so please don't speak out of your ***. And all this "game has passed him up, can't coach any more" ********* about Augie is misplaced as well. I don't think any of the coaches gave any false perceptions about the offensive wherewithal of this team from beginning of the season. It was always going to be a bunting, running, linedrive type of team. Power and runs in bunches is not going to be part of the package. Essentially, they need to start finding a way to score 4-5 runs per game behing the pitching and defense they have. If/when they start doing that, they will start rolling people.

They just had a tough week, guys and gals. The sky is not falling yet.

Great post Bankerhorn.

Welcome to the baseball board, Tecolote. You do realize Mark Johnson is no longer at anm? The advantage Rice has is the talent-rich Houston area. I count 21 players on their roster from the Houston area, which means the player can live at home and does not require a full scholarship.

Truth is with only 11.7 scholarships per year, there is great parity in college baseball. Tell your friend Texas has 2 national championships in the past 8 years, how many does his team have?

4 Straight Ls and 3 of them to KU. Hope they get this turned around at home this week or we're in for a long dismal season.

Greetings from the north. I haven't posted on your board since two years ago, but have enjoyed reading. I agree. With Kansas leading the conference with ANY record looks as if the universe is out of whack. But it won't last.

And, torre, did I read you right to suggest that Rice has an advantage because most of it's players are from the Houston area and "can live at home"???? thus not needing a full schollie?

Ouch! Either I'm way out of it or I need to get with it. But I don't think you'll find 21 Rice baseball players commuting to campus. Maybe so, but I don't think so.

Regrets that our midweek with you guys got weathered out two weeks ago.

And fyi, our recruiting follows the same pattern as yours (as do most major colleges). Our head coach never meets the recruits until their on-campus visit. Our assistants, primarily one of our assistants, does 90% of our recruiting.

See you guys in several weeks. I'm looking forward to seeing your new digs.

BUProf - I did not say they necessarily commute, but most players would not object to a half scholarship to be that close to home, family, and friends, and to play for an outstanding program they grew up attending games. With that said, Rice has an outstanding program and their players could play at any D1 school. I am just saying it is an advantage to be that close to home. I respect Rice.

Lighten up already.
We have won 6 one-run games and lost 3 one-run games and we are 14-6.
Winners expect to win (so I appreciate the posters intensity), but don't beat yourself to a pulp when you lose. Don't pull a muscle jumping off the bandwagon.
Focus and commit to win the next inning.
See you at the ball park on Tuesday.

I was out of town all weekend and had to keep up with the sweep from Vegas. While it was very disappointing, I still believe in the team and their ability to bounce back. I just hope that Augie can pick a starting 9 and stick with them.
