Tequila Recommendations

No matter the brand, you must have 100% agave, none of that Cuervo ****. I like Patron and do not like Herradura. Gives me a wicked headache.

Just made a batch of margs this weekend for a party and think this is a solid recipe:

1 part fresh lime juice
1 part tequila
1/4 part cointreau
3/4 part water
sugar to taste

mix at room temp. shake over ice to dilute a little more and chill. serve straight up. never fails.

would only use silver for margs. reposado should be sipped and is too good to mix.

dont understand why anyone would use a 30 dollar bottle and LIMEADE when it takes 10 minutes to get some fresh lime juice going.

Cuervo, like most of the other brand names, has lines that are 100% agave, and lines that are mixtos (like the Cuervo Especial). I don't like any tequila that is not 100% agave, but as long as it's 100% agave, it tastes fine to me in a margarita.

Like a couple of others have mentioned, I don't really like the smooth tequilas in a margarita-- I save those for drinking neat or maybe on the rocks. In a margarita, I like to taste the bite, which is also why I'm fine with triple sec rather than Cointreau, and I don't like the flavor of Grand Marnier in a margarita at all, though I do like brandy on its own.

Lots of hype, lots of lore, lots of biases to this discussion. And as always, Hornfans amplifies these tenfold!

I've bee using Dominier in place of Grand Marnier for quite a while and found it to be the perfect substitute for the price.

My recipe is as follows (for 4):
-1 cup good tequila (like several varieties, can't remember the most recent, but will report back)
-1/2 cup Dominier (or Grand Manier)
-1/3 cup fresh lime juice

Shaken and served straight up. If you want them on the rocks (my wife usually does), I add about 1/3 C of water.

I like Hornitos as well, but am NO tequilla expert. A couple of things I do know.

1) Key limes over limes ALWAYS, if you are working on fresh juices.

2)Cuervo mix is one of the foulest substances I have ever put in my mouth. I have found no better mix than Sauza.
