Ted Valentine surfaces again

I watched the last 11 minutes of the UNC Duke game. Dickie talked for some length about how many blocks there were (13+)versus the fact that Tyler H. never went to the free throw line. Then they show Coach K arguing with Ted V.

Is Ted really this bad or is it just that Barnes and company got unlucky to have Ted have a bad attitude for that one game?

If Ted is really this bad, why is he still officiating the high-profile games?

Can you imagine even knowing the name of even one other basketball official?

Thanks

Ted Hillary, Steve Welmer, John Higgins, Tom O'Neill, Curtis Shaw, Scott Thornley. I know the names of all of these refs. But Ted Valentine is the only one who sucks at an epic level.

Can't be all that bad since, for just about the first time ever, I saw a player fake a jump shot and then jump wildly into the arms of the defender without getting rewarded for that "shot" with FTs.

No offense but ted v is one of the best in the country...and has been for a while....you dont get assigned those games just because. Bball is the hardest game in the world to officiate.....but sure you do a much better job on your couch.

I agree that Valentine is a good official. All officials blow calls here and there...it happens.

Seems to me that he's been in the spotlight ever since the incident with Bobby. He did mess that one up pretty bad.

Pancho, I know you are an official. I am too, although I've been out of the association for a few years, I still do several tournaments at local private schools ever year.

What Ted did in that Xavier game was unconscionable. I don't care what you think. He violated every principle of officiating there is.

Either you don't know what we are talking about or you are defending the indefensible.

Tell me how you could possible justify what he did in that game? Please.

I've always felt it's perfectly acceptable for an official to call a player the "N" word. I don't know why anyone would get worked up about it.

I just referenced why Rick Barnes got tossed from a game for the only time since he's been at Texas, and received one of only two or three technicals during his tenure. You consider the way I said it condescending. I consider it a very normal mode of communication for me, which is sarcasm.

I'll point out Valentine didn't coach in another game the rest of that tournament, and it wasn't coincidence.

Defend him all you want. I think your argument is perched on a short ledge, and whether it's through ignorance or some kind of foolish closing of ranks, I'd love to see your defense of Valentine's despicable actions pushed over a cliff.

But you keep admiring how he goes about his job all you want.

Valentine is probably a knowledgable, hard-working ref who is respected within the community. He also appears to enjoy the spotlight, and from time to time that trait seems to get the better of him. It certainly happened in the Xavier game with Brandon Mouton (and eventually, Coach Barnes).

I don't know how one could deny this or even downplay how serious a problem it is.

-Saying that someone is "not qualified" is silly, it's like saying that since I never played or coached in the NBA I can't criticize a player for a bonehead play.

-Basketball is hard to ref, but a lot of missed calls aren't due to that, which is what is so aggrevating. Not referencing Ted Valentine here specifically, since I have no idea how frequently/infrequently he blows calls.

-If he really did F-bomb Mouton and Mouton really did just ask what he did wrong, then I don't see how you can dispute that Valentine deserved some sort of official suspension.

Valentine did not advance that year because RB extracted a promise that he would not rip TV in the postgame in exchange for him not advancing.
