This video will blow your mind. In our own state in Seagoville HS a student was just pummling another student during class. Video shows the students just watching the fight doing nothing to break it up AND the TEACHER just standing there with his hands in his pockets.

The response from the fat teacher union lady was classic in defending the non-action of this teacher.

"There is a huge question mark with what is truly appropriate." Give me a freaking break. This teacher, who was a MALE, should have stepped in and stopped this fight. I'm flabbergasted by why no one in the class tried to stop it.

This whole thing makes me
pukey.gif
I'd kick that *** hat kid who was doing the punching out of school.

i can't believe i am defending the teachers union but in this instance she is technically correct. the teacher could get sued or fired for intervening. this is our society today. this is why our kids cant get an education in public schools. the inmates run the asylum. if i was a teacher i might intervene but im a big guy. that tub that was teaching geometry might have been afraid of the student. he looked like he knew what he was doing. i feel sorry for the kid that got picked on, that other kid deserved to have his *** kicked. a kid like that should be sent to jail and expelled. unfortunately, our education system is treated as an entitlement, not a privilege. kids today do not appear to be afraid of getting into trouble anymore. we had fights when in was in high school 20 years ago but they were rare. i have friends that are teachers who say they have fights every day and they agree with my observations. kids today as a whole appear to have much less discipline.

But why shouldn't the teacher be sued by the victim for non-interference? Doesn't the student have a right to expect some type of discipline and control from the teacher in his classroom?

Sounds like a police issue to me. Schools/teachers have no power. What are we going to do? Tell his mom? "Make" him go to saturday school? Make him fight at an alt school? The police can send his *** to jail.

As far as the teacher goes, it would be hard for me to not break up the fight just based on instincts alone. But, if this guy works at a school where fights are common and he has been instructed not to do anything in the event of a fight, then blame admin. Or better yet, blame the punk and send his *** to jail.

Larry- I hear you and understand. But surely there is an intercom system or some other comunication tool that the teacher could have at least requested security or a principle or something!! He literally stands next to the kid being punched and has his hands in his pocket watching.

Breaking up the fight may not be an option- going for help is always an option. Telling another student to get security. Something!! Surely you are instructed on how to respond to fights by your school prinicpal or board or something. Right?

Well, I teach elementary school so its really not an issue that we really deal with. Is it clear in the video that he does not call for help in any way? If so, he should not have a job.

it is a strange video all around. one kid is in a boxing stance repeatedly punching the other kid in the face with jabs and the other kid stands there and does nothing. the fat teacher is standing about 6 feet away standing there watching and the kids are sitting at their desks just filming it on their phones. it almost looks like a class activity.

flash back 20 years ago to a fight at my high school. you will have people screaming "fight!" running around, some jumping in to try and break it up, a teacher yelling to stop and getting in the middle of it, etc. society has changed a lot.

Just looking at the vid, blurred though it is, the teacher is not a small woman but a fair sized man. He doesn't appear to make any effort to break it up in any way, not even to shout for it to stop.

But listening to the union rep may explain it. I would like to know if she told the truth. When was a teacher " reprimanded" for breaking up a fight. when did a teacher get so hurt from a fight the teacher could no longer teach?

edit to add
took this from the NEA website. looks like good sound advice, none of which the teacher here followed except the last one

"Never ignore aggression. If ignored, small acts of aggression can quickly grow to more violent aggression.

Go toward the scene of the violence. Sometimes just the presence of an adult will stop a potentially violent situation.

Quickly review the situation. Try to determine what has happened, who is there, and what is likely to happen. If the situation includes members of rival gangs, send an onlooker for more adults.

Look to see if there are any weapons present.

In a strong voice, tell students that they must stop doing what they're doing. Sometimes students are hoping an adult will tell them to stop fighting so they will have a "graceful" way out.

Tell any onlookers to leave the area. Call students by name if you know them, and tell them specifically where to go. For example, "Brian, go back to your class now!" is more effective than saying, "Everyone get out of here now!"

Tell onlookers, and those involved in the aggression, the consequences of not following your directions.

Make a mental note of the names of onlookers.

Never get between students who are fighting."

Teacher can't make a kid do anything. Only way to make him is to use physical contact, and if they do that they run the risk of getting sued. On the other hand, do nothing and get sent to jail for a year for violating the Good Samaritan Law.

So you teachers on here, is there no policy or standard practice to follow in a fight? Not call security or have another student go find secuirty? I cant believe that there is not a standard policy in place for school fights.

Im going to go contrarian on this one and side w/ the teacher, he doesnt seem afraid in the sense that the thinks the assailant is dangerous to his person. He almost takes a referee stance. Only someone who was instructed not to interfere would show that type of body language.

As a middle school teacher I'd instinctively break it up. It's not part of the actual job description, but it is an unwritten responsibility. If admin disagreed with my actions I guess I'd just have to take my lumps.

VYFan, I hadnt even bothered to look at that video until I read your post. Now that I have seen it, it doesnt seem to make sense to me either.

The way the kid is just standing there while Mad Dog, I mean, the teacher, looks on, and the other kid goes karate kid on him... it looks like he is shadow boxing. It doesnt even look real.

I remember fights every damn day at lunch, and kids were actually wrestling, throwing punches and rolling on the ground. This looks like some kind of classroom demonstration. Just weird. Thats NOT a fight. Thats NOT a beatdown. The kid in the interview isnt even bruised at all.

I have been advocating issuing tasers to teachers for years, and allowing them to use them indiscriminately as an instruction tool. ("Brian, did you say something? ZZZZap! Were you commenting on the French Revolution?")

Just wanted to chime in again and say I am thoroughly and totally disgusted with the majority of posters on this thread.

Advocating the teacher should stand there and do nothing?!?! Really?

Is it any wonder that the inmates are running the asylum when ignoring such a blatant beat down is actually codified?

Grow a pair.

Please.

Here is another vid of another fight in same classroom with same teacher. The Link

reading the teacher try to justify and then to realize he is on paid leave, that will likely extend to the next school year is disgusting
"When reached by phone Tuesday, Muse, 54, denied allowing fights in his classroom, but added he's not allowed to break up fights.

"That's my school policy — DISD policy," he said. "Teachers are not responsible for breaking up fights."

DISD does not have a clear policy on whether teachers should step in between fights. Teachers are told to first send someone for help."

If h called for help it couldn't be seen or heard in either Vid.

Its hard to have a shcool policy that requires breaking up fights. What if its 250 pound 17 year olds and the teacher is prego? What happens when a kid gets hurt by the teacher breaking up the fight? Its not as black and white as some seem to think.

Just some interesting fighting knowledge that I heard…

The explosive muscle capacity for the human male hits a peak at around the age of 24. The explosive capacity between an 18 year old and an in-shape 50 year old is roughly equivalent. There is a quick rise to 24 followed by a slow steady fall.

That’s right all you little punks!

OK, I teach and coach in Junior High. Our school policy is to call for administration (intercom, phone, student) to break up the fight. Personally, I don't mind breaking fights up. Usually, yelling at the kids to stop works, very rarely have I had to physically separate kids.

That being said, there is too much emphasis on the teacher being at fault. The focus needs to be on crappy kids. We had a fight in the bathroom a while back that a kid recorded on his camera phone. What happened to the kids? Three days suspension and these are two kids that have been suspended multiple times during the year. It really is sad that we can't get kids like this out of the public school system.

Unfortunately, we must give these kids chance, after chance, after chance. Hell, it's almost impossible to fail a class now-a-days and we wonder why they don't have the skills to cut it in college or the workforce.
