First and foremost, good luck to Irby, we are all hoping for a speedy recovery!!

Now, what to do about the TE spot. The word seems to be that either Ullman or Greg Smith are set to take over. From what little I know these two are more blocking TEs than great pass threats (please let me know more if you can). Now I am no recruiting genius and have never played TE, but is there any thought to the notion of moving Ahmard Howard back to TE from DE??? He seemed to be heavily recruited at TE, but was moved. Why, I do not fully know, and I also recognize the lack of depth at D-line, but any word on Howard being a TE option??

Seems like a reasonable move to me, especially since he has gotten very little PT as a DE, but please educate me.

From what I've read, Howard has/will be moved back to TE. A link posted on the Irby thread also indicates that Ian Harris may return to practice soon, so hopefully he'll be able to play in the near future.

Other options are Brock FItzhenry, Desean Hales, Jeremy Hills and D.J. Monroe.

Ian Harris should be back sometime soon imo. I cant believe he's been gone this long to begin with. Marshall is done for the year as far as i'm concerned. Smith, Ullman, and Howard are non downfield threats.

Summed up = We need Ian Harris back on the field immeditely.

Sorry for missing the posts on the tread, I somehow I got lost in the 'it was a cheap shot' vs the 'have you ever played football' conversation.

Is there any word on Harris, other than expecting him to be back soon? Also, why was Howard so highly regarded as a TE if he isn't a deep threat? I know nothing about him except his move to DE, but is he slow or have bad hands or what?

In a "players' quotes" from MBTF from the summer, Ullman talked about how he was attending all the 7 on 7s and really working on his pass catching skills.

There is going to be a huge drop off at the position now. There just isn't another guy that can block, run routes, catch, like Irby can, much less do them all.

With Ullman and Smith the offense will be more like having an additional OL on the field which lends itself to a slightly better running game if the defense doesn't just blitz more often and show the TE's very little respect. When they do run routes and Colt throws to them what I am worried about is their chemistry. Colt and Irby were meshing nicely. With the other TE's there is more potential for misreads or bad timing which can not only cause incompletions but can cause turnovers.

...we are going to have an identity in the running game.. power with cody johnson and hopefully slice and dice with fozzy ...to complement our sizzling passing game...now of all times we need to develop that third receiver ...malcolm williams anyone

alamo, I was just getting ready to post Malcolm Williams after reading the suggestion in the AAS. He doesn't have the bulk of a TE but he has the height and the hands and it would definitely provide an outlet for getting him on the field. The Link

Why not give Chris O. a shot. He is the best blocking AND pass receiving RB. He doesn't have the height, but could be somewhat lean TE.

We cannot wait for Ian Harris to return and then wait a couple of games to see if he is the answer. Ullman & Smith are blockers first and catching TE's a distant second - they will not be perceived as a threat by opposing team coaches or players. Ahmad Howard is probably also in that camp for now.

Malcom Williams is too inexperienced, < lbs. and would have OJT for the TE position.

IMO, you need to solve the problem ASAP as there are no immediate decent alternatives now or on the horizon. Chris O. seems to me to be the answer. He is 6' 1" and 225 lbs. - big enough and certainly bigger than an existing current roster WR. Chris is a team guy, wants to play, he is a good blocker, he can catch the ball and has some speed so he IS a genuine threat. There is your answer.

Now, I agree the Horns will be a little thin at RB, but not as skinny as we are at TE right now. RB's: McGee, Whitaker, Johnson, Hills, Newton - Chris O. could move back if necessary or if someone else steps up to handle the TE chores.

Let's vote and if we have a majority for Chris, I will call Mack and Greg later this afternoon

My vote is aginst Chris O and for Ahmard or a big WR. Chris O does not have the blocking experience as a TE, which is vastly different from RB. He may be able to pick it up quickly, but who knows? Same goes with a WR. I know nothing about Ahmard, but he has the experience and seems to have the proportions to be at least somewhat of a threat.

i apologize if my comments were misconstrued ....i meant we need malcolm williams to become a legitimate homerun threat as a wide receiver as we go big at tight end for pass protection and a power running game for cody johnson...

Enough with moving Chris O to TE. That aint gonna happen so get it out of your head. It looks as if for now, they want Smith and Ullman to take most of the snaps. This is good for blocking purposes but has no downfield threat. Our best bet is to get Harris back and playing. He comes back to practice Tuesday and hopefully he will start making strides.

Aside, why dont we take out the TE and add a WR. Four wide seems like it would work just fine. Quan, Shipley, Malcolm, Kirkendoll / Collins. What would be wrong with this?

Per Mack's website, the Monday roster: Greg Smith has been named the starter vs. Arky. Backups in this order: Ullman, Howard or Harris.

Lokks like we have the prototypical blocking tight ends in Ullman and Smith. Who knows what we have or when we may have Marshall and Harris or if howard is the answer. I'm just throwing these names out for hecks sake as possible downfield threatys. i'm not aware of whether these guys can all evenn catch colds but perhaps there is some help down field.
Dan Buckner 6-4 213
Dustin Earnest 6-3 233
Lukwe Tiemann 6-2 240
Malcom Williams 6-3 215
Montrae Webber 6-3 210
Nic Redwine 6-3 230
Keenan Robinson 6-3 225
Just some thoughts on solutions to the problem. Get well soon Blaine!!!

I got laughed at when I considered Cody

, but now the situation might demand this type of move.

Here is my list of little used talent that needs looking at.

1. Luke Tieman

2. Phillip Payne

3. Montre Webber

4. Nic Redwine

5. Mac McWhorter

6. Ahmard Howard

Surprised only one poster that I've noticed has mentioned moving Luke Tiemann to TE. He seems the most logical choice, given his size (6-2, 240), athleticism & the fact he isn't likely to see much action at FB in this his Sr. year.

IMO, Ogbonnaya is too valuable at RB in our current scheme, to move him to TE.
