Super Regional Texas v. East Carolina

Love the result.

One of our sloppiest efforts in the field that I can recall though...

Early game?
Loud fans?
Humidity?
Lousy sleep?
Who knows...

Of course, as the #1 fielding team in the country, the fielding today seemed awful. For most teams, this would just be another day.

Not to be flippant, but it probably doesn’t matter because each pitcher will go 1, 2, or at most 3 innings.

Fresh arms:

Southard
LBJ
Sthele
Morehouse
Nixon
Cobb
Stewart
Blair

Seen innings in Supers, but good for an inning or two:

Hansen
Harrison
Olivarez
Tristan (maybe)
Gordon (maybe)

Don’t worry too much. ECU has the same problem.
Doesn’t ECU have a Sunday starter left.

Ags to Omaha……looks like the baseball portal built them a team to go with their winning coach. They will be formidable going forward.

Got into a hole with stupidity, got out with heroics. Great comeback, but tomorrow let's hope Dodo remembers how to steal a base and let's hope the coach realizes what challenges are for.

I say go with Clemens...among the baddest of all badazzez to ever grace the 40 Acres. And maybe bring in Huston Street to close.

Yet, without Steve Labay we don't win in 83. He was more effective against will Clark and Rafael Palmiero in the regional than anyone we had. Soft tossing lefty vs those powerful bats from the lefthand side. Labay bailed us out IIRC

Just some current personal opinions

I. Best arms for tomorrow (not in any order)

Southard (98 mph fastball that he can paint the corners with--must get a feel real early for the ump's strike zone tomorrow; umps seem to hate this guy for some reason; good slider too). Southard could be 1st Team All-Conference or even an All-American by the time he's through at UT. Only went 0.2 innings on Friday and only threw 8 pitches--so he's good for at least an inning or two. We will see Southard tomorrow.

Sthele (2 innings max; can show up really, really good on any given day for an inning or two, then he falls apart). He hasn't pitched at all in the Supers, but it's dangerous to keep him in there past 2 innings or so.

LBJ (he's hard to hit with that down angle and downward break at the plate--even on his fastball). Weird looking delivery that befuddles batters. It's unknown how long he can go for. Only went 0.2 innings on Friday and threw 10 pitches, so he's good for an inning or two.

Harrison Most reliable reliever over the course of the year. Hasn't gone many innings in the Supers. Threw 10 pitches on Friday, and 8 pitches today. Good for a few innings tomorrow--maybe more if he's on.

Tristan Stevens Hasn't gone many innings, and he only threw 14 pitches Friday and 9 pitches today. Good for at least an inning or two--maybe much longer if he's on.

Hansen Staff Co-Ace. Only went 4 innings on Friday, but threw 88 pitches so he might have a good inning in him for tomorrow; or perhaps a situational appearance against 1-2 batters.

Gordon. Threw 78 pitches today. Could be good for an inning, or a situational appearance against 1-2 batters.

This game could be cobbled together only using the pitches listed above. (see Cobb below, for another likely arm tomorrow)

II. Bad A$$ Stuff, but shaky control guys

Then there's the super-nasty stuff crew; but each of whom has had some serious control problems from time-to-time this year:

Nixon
threw 7 pitches on Friday. Good for an inning or two, but with a very short leash.

DuPlantier threw 36 pitches today. Did well, except for that solo homerun. Probably won't see him tomorrow.

Stewart major league scouts love this guy for his potential. His control has caused some heartburn among fans at times this year. But oh, that slider... It drops down to the basement right over the plate. Nastier than Nixon even.

III. More Marginal Stuff guys who can go lots of innings (the "Innings Eaters") again, in no order.

Then there's the innings--eaters, guys whose stuff may arguably not be quite what the pitchers mentioned above have..., but who can go longer if they're on:

Cobb (side-armer; looks like a stud one inning, then gives up lots of hits the next; pretty good control, but he gets hit). Can be useful for an inning or two with a real short leash. Mature upper-classman. Hasn't appeared yet in the Supers. We may see him for an inning or two. In fact, I think we probably will see him.

Morehouse (he's our fairly reliable guy for beating lesser-competition mid-week teams). I worry that really good batting lineups like E. Carolina might shell him though. He gave up 2 hits and 2 earned runs on Friday in 2 innings. Threw 45 pitches. Not sure if we'll see him. To be fair to Morehouse, there's nothing "Marginal" about his mid-to-upper 90s fastball. It's just that he's still developing as a pitcher, and has mostly done well against the lesser competition of mid-week games. Maybe next year he'll grow into a weekend starter.

Eckhardt (showed flashes here-and-there, but couldn't hold down the mid-week starter position)

Blair (he doesn't have a real huge fan club on these boards...)

IV. Ain't Happening

1. Cameron Dayton
2. Ace Whitehead (he has a good bat for pinch hitting though... He'll make a mark at UT by the time he's done--at bat and in the field / not on the mound...)
3. Sam Wallbridge

V. Haven't pitched at all this year (or maybe an inning real early on)--so Who Knows...? Emergency Relievers, I guess...

1. O' Banan (stud high schooler from the Hill Country who had a rivalry with Stewart; this guy will be good eventually, but he's a redshirt for now).
2. Chase Lummus
3. Caden Noah (he may have thrown an inning or two early in the year...?)
4. Jack Arthur (who? You might ask...)
5. Jace Hutchins (aggie transfer)
6. Alec Grossman
7. Carson McKinney

DuP gets the win today after much criticism from me earlier this season.
He's always had nasty, nasty stuff, but his control was way off earlier this season. It appears that, under the tutelage of pitching coach Sean Allen, DuP has dramatically improved in that area over the course of the year. Now that's some good development right there.

:clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:

Why is the runner on 2nd base not running on contact with bases loaded and 2 outs?

Their right fielder was ducking like a Yankee in Fenway dodging batteries on the walkoff. Or the other way around. Whichever you prefer.

Keep in mind that Roger was #4 on that staff:

Schiraldi
Killer
Capel
Roger

Those of us in Omaha were less than thrilled we had no pitching left for the championship game, but the kid delivered and delivered big.

Not to nitpick, but Roger was a strong #2. Capel had a good record that season but he wasn't the monster Clemens was (who was?). Killer was our closer, he started only 5 games in 83 I believe.

Calvin was great that season.

Labay was our savior vs miss state. I don't remember if he pitched the afternoon elimination game or the final that same night. I do recall msu batters kicking the turf constantly after popping up or rolling a weak ground ball. He absolutely had them baffled. And msu was so damn cocky when they beat us in game 2

Bottom 9 and first run crosses the plate ends the game?? 1st and 2nd don’t count tbh, just have to keep from getting picked off.
What if the ball was hit towards 3rd base and a faster start would have prevented the force at 3rd, which forces a harder throw at home or 1st base?

And, of course, Olivarez. He’s thrown some in the supers. Probably has an inning or two in him. He’s good. Gave up a homer today. Still, a generally reliable good arm with some very good stats.

Bottom 9 and first run crosses the plate ends the game?? 1st and 2nd don’t count tbh, just have to keep from getting picked off.
Every runner must advance one base. If they don't and they are forced out, the inning is over and the run does not count.

I remember that Labay would come in from right field and throw at least one "lalob" and embarrass a hitter, usually one of their best. When he wasn't in right field, we had "adventures in fly balls". Darren Loy was a really good catcher but gave that term a whole new meaning.

Killer was drafted the year before by the Rangers, but I seem to recall that he injured his arm in 83 and was never the same after that. I saw him at Disch Falk a couple of days after the CWS loading up his Grand Prix to go to Arlington and sign. I spent 83 waiting for him to return to 82 form.

As far as I know Roger & Mike are still close friends. I haven't seen Capel since he left the dealership in Katy to move to Clear Lake. Kid had one helluva fastball.

Schiraldi was one of the very best pitchers to ever wear the Burnt Orange, but he could never shake that one damn pitch. I remember Randy Hendricks giving me some baseball magazine which said he was the best prospect at any position in the Indians system.

The 1983 Texas Baseball pamphlet had a photo Calvin, Killer, Capel & Roger on the front. I was cleaning out storage units and found mine this past week.

What is the ball was hit towards 3rd base and a faster start would have prevented the force at 3rd, which forces a harder throw at home or 1st base?
True, any hit to the infield would have likely ended the inning. I think he just read the ball off the bat and Melendez or whoever was at 2nd, can’t remember now wanted to watch the ball fall or not cause it was actually pretty close to the outfielder. (caught up in the moment). :idk:
