Stupid Pitcher Management

That would be ridiculous, and I hope every coach on the staff gets fired if that happens.

It's one thing to bring him on in relief when you've got a chance to win, and you need a lockdown arm on the mound. It's entirely another to take a guy who threw 94 pitches on Saturday and make him start again on Monday. I don't care how much rubber is in his arm. Not worth putting his career in jeopardy. This isn't softball.

bassale, I don't disagree with you, but I also don't think 150 pitches or Friday-Sunday stints are acceptable and they've done those with him already.

Is Whitmer not on the postseason roster?

Hey Pitching, what roster are you referring to? The one on Texas Sports BaseballThe Link still lists Casey.

I say we should start David Maroul then bring in Huston for the early game then Start JP and relieve him w J Brent for the second game.

Horn69, those old cliches are usually pretty good.

It was my understanding that Whitmer was one of the guys who got "sent to the minors," so to speak, earlier in the year. I think Marcus Tackett was also. Haven't seen him in a while. I think it might be time to bring those guys back, given the situation with the bullpen, but I'm guessing that was part of the agreement: you're done for the year.

Let me say right away that I thought it was a horrible idea to pitch Ruffin in relief on Sunday that one time, but clearly they have that kind of confidence in him. I seem to recall they at least had him warming up on Sunday a few other times. Regardless, Ruffin was a reliever early in the year and if he threw 30 pitches on Saturday, I'm pretty sure he could throw three to five innings Monday. If that is not the case, then clearly they made the right choice. But assuming he could have started Monday, let's analyze the choice:

You know you're in a situation where you have to win four games to advance. To do that, the soft underbelly of your bullpen is going to have to eat some innings. Would you rather them do that with a double digit lead against Sam Houston or in a close game against Rice? Sure, if you take Ruffin out there is some chance that Sam Houston gets back in the game. Whatever risk there was, I think it's pretty clear that the reward of being able to throw Ruffin Monday would outweigh that risk.

And because I don't especially like Bohls siding with me, I will point out that the vast majority of the press box thought Ruffin should have been taken out as well. The Link

One other note on the bullpen situation. On Friday, I sat next to a guy that had spoken with Brandon Belt. Apparently he has a sore arm and told the staff that before Oklahoma City, but said he could go if they needed him. After his performance there with subpar velocity and the continuing sore arm, I'd cross Belt off the list of relief candidates.

Sounds like Augie didn't want to trust that many innings to the bullpen. Facts are facts. And Augie's the one who's *** is on the line - not mine or Bohls..or Hornfans.

Hook'em!!!

This issue was addressed in the post-game interviews. The coaches talked to Chance about what he had done before in high school in making their decision about how long to leave him in. In his interview,Chance said he pitched in consecutive days to some degree that I don't expect Johnson and Garrido to do here, but, at least they have an idea of what he is capable. I wasn't listening closely, can anyone else give details of those interviews?

Man, before the year, I thought we would have trouble getting all the guys enough innings. Shame. What happened with Whitmer?

Also, I agree with bassale47's earlier post. Chance was planned to pitch. It would be a disruption of fluidity or continuity to pull him after one inning, and there is no guarantee he will have a strong outing if saved for later. Hasn't this backfired on us before?

Our season will more than likely end today, and I expect Skip Johnson to be the scapegoat as changes must be made.

I don't always understand Augie, but I've learned to never criticize him either. And there are some real good reasons for that.

Kirk Bohls nor anybody else on this thread has coached NCAA college baseball as many years as Garrido, seen as many different pitching staffs as he has, nor have they won as many national championships as he has.

If you look at the facts, you'll see that there was NOTHING stupid about Augie's tactics re the use of Chance for as many innings as he could.

The overall ERA of this year's team is the worst it has been since 1999:

2008 4.46
2007 3.46
2006 3.89
2005 2.80
2004 2.66
2003 3.50
2002 2.82
2001 3.17
2000 3.30
1999 5.61
1998 6.36
1997 5.78

To risk a loss in a do-or-die game by taking out your best pitcher and entrusting the rest of the game to a staff that blew game after game this year (and as recently as the Big XII tournament tried to lose a game where Texas scored 11 runs) would have not been a wise decision.

Augie would have been criticized endlessly by Bohls and others if he had taken Chance out and Texas had lost that game (not that he would have given a damn about what a bunch of amateurs think).

And, in any case, the chances of Texas winning four in a row are slim anyway. But I hope to extend my hotel reservations after the games today, Sunday, and be here for the game tomorrow.

Marley -- working on it as hard and fast as we can. Mea culpa maxima.

FWIW, we were AT that forgettable Friday Missouri game.
