Stupid Pitcher Management

There is no reason Ruffin should have gone more than three innings with that lead. You have to win four games and he could have started Monday if he only threw three. Stupid.

He either didnt pitch at all or pitches all nine seems to be the option so go with all nine. Augie has 5 NC's I suspect he knows a little about pitcher management.

Yea throwing Ruffin for the whole game is the best option and is basic baseball. If he was going to pitch at all today then he had to go as long as he could to save the bullpen. Taking out Chance would have used our entire bullpen up and we would have been screwed. Now we can piitch Wood tomorrow and then Boening the next day if we make it and gthen for the last game either use KK and a lot of bullpen or Workmen. Either way you do it Chance would not have been able to throw again in the regional after today.

and really, say what you want about the bullpen but they are very important in trying to win the next 3 games.

********. Ruffin has thrown multiple innings of relief on Sunday after throwing a complete game Friday. No doubt he could have gone five at least on Monday if he only threw three today.

Would he have gotten the W? I know it's a team sport and all, but it would be nice to get a W by your name as well.

But what does Augie know, right?

I think I'm going to go ahead and side with Augie on this one. Ruffin has demonstrated before that he has a rubber arm and I think he's easily good for an IP or more on Monday. Instead of bitching about pitcher management, how about some props for the offense that made this a laugher from the beginning?? I'll take 13 runs/game from here on out and love my chances.

You would like to be able to use Ruffin again the in regionals, but you don't want to hurt his future by throwing him on short rest with a tired arm. No doubt he wants the ball every game, but you do have to look out for his own good at the same time. He is a freshman and has potential for some great years ahead of him.

I was wondering all the way over here in Denmark why would you even pitch Ruffin today? Why not save him for tomorrow. If our 3 or 4 pitcher can't stop Sam Houston and our offense dosen't wake up then a super regional win was already out of the question, right?

Nope. When you're on the verge of elimination, there is no tomorrow. There is only today. You have to take things one game at a time, and as far as pitching is concerned, you have to take into account the fact that your offense put up exactly one run the day before and that Rice only put up 3 against the same team. If you expect your team to win the game, you've got to put them in the best position to do so, and that means putting your best arm on the mound.

As far as removing Chance early today, I don't think that's the most effective way to go about the situation. First off, people underestimate the impact that routine has on a pitcher's psyche. That's why when Augie pulls a starter after 2 or 3 innings, he sends him to the pen to finish out his tosses rather than just putting him on the bench until his next start. Rice and SJU are being forced to use their best pitchers right now too. When it comes down to it, everyone will be relying on their bullpen. If Texas had pulled Ruffin today after 2 or 3 innings, you use up your bullpen to finish the game. Then you've gotta win a doubleheader tomorrow and play again on Monday. And Ruffin is good for maybe half a game on Monday in that scenario, and you have no bullpen by then.

As it stands now, Ruffin is good for an inning or two Monday, if he's needed, and the bullpen is still in reasonable condition for a double-header tomorrow.

Rice is actually saving St. Clair, but Brown is going for St. John's

Chance threw 94 pitches today, which is a lot, but considering he's averaging about 120 per start, I think he's good for a bullpen appearance.

To the poster who said he has come in and thrown multiple innings on sunday after starting Friday, he's only done that once, after his 10 inning gem in a loss against okie lite, and he gave up 3 runs without getting an out. With that said, I still think he'll be available for an inning, maybe a few on Monday.

Rice is using St. Clair now. Brought him in to relieve Kelley, unnecessarily as it turns out because they just went up 6-2.

So provided we play SJU again, and yes it's still early, do they have any good starters left? I thought I read they really only have 2. So we go with Wood tomorrow? I haven't seen any comments yet by Augie. Or do we save Wood for Rice and pitch Boening tomorrow? Yes I know I know play like it's your last, but we really need a front liner to go up against Rice if thats who it is.

rice and st. john's have really complicated things as far as pitchers go. SJU pulled their ace tonight after 4+ innings and 70 pitches in a 2-1 game, which seems to be a conservatory move. rice put in st. clair in the 5th to shut down a st. john's rally and is still pitching right now. it'll be very interesting to see the matchups and moves tomorrow.

I would pitch Wood and throw Boening against Rice. I think Boening is our 3rd best starter behind Chance and Wood and might even be better than Wood. If he wasn't hurt he probably would have been our number 1 most of the season. We got very lucky that Chance emerged and filled that role. But Riley looked very good against KSU and when healthy is a very good starter.

I know that Boening hasn't pitched much this year, is coming off injury, etc., but he did a nice job against KSU, and that was somewhat of a pressure situation. The only thing that makes me feel okay about Wood is his experience. So I really don't have a preference for who to throw against which team.

As for St. John's, I believe they have another lefty, but from what I've read, there is a sharp drop-off between their top 2 guys and this guy. We'll find out soon enough.

Well, even Tommy Harmon said after the game that Ruffin might "be able to help out for an inning" on Monday, so I don't think Moreland's comment was totally out of line. As someone else pointed out, number of innings and/or pitches notwithstanding, Ruffin has only pitched twice in a weekend one time, and it did not go very well. I do not expect to see him at all on Monday unless it is absolutely necessary, and even then, it's probably only one inning, maybe two. Does no good to get out of regionals and not make it past supers because you blew up your best pitcher's arm.

it's an old cliche, but...you take them one game at a time. you're fortunate to have two quality starters for tomorrow. Then hope you live to see Monday.

If we can make it to Monday, I'm honestly envisioning Huston-in-Tallahassee stuff.

IIRC, he came on in the sixth inning of the first game and closed it out, then came on in the fifth inning of the second game and finished it off.

Honestly, if we make it to Monday, I expect that they'll hand Chance the ball to start the game.
