State Farm Lone Star Showdown Updates - April 2010

Hats off to the Softball team who beat the Aggies 4-1 on home runs by Nadia Taylor and Lexy Bennett. Blaire Luna pitched a wonderful game for the win!

Then the Texas Men's Tennis team beat the Aggies 7-0. Nice job guys! I was lucky enough to attend the softball game and the end of the tennis match.

This means Texas wins the Lone Star Shootout this year! Hook "Em Horns!!

shhwwweeeeet!!! love the dominating sweeps in baseball and mens tennis. but also the comebacks by the womens tennis and softball teams were good to see as well (especially softball after losing a heartbreaker earlier in the year).

Thanks to all those in Austin that were able to go support the Horns in the two events last night. Extra thanks to Driftwood who not only went to the softball game but also the last part of the tennis game to support our team. He is the type of fan we are proud and happy to have to show the support that others of us are not able to go too.

tamster are you really a tamster, as in someone who went to the Texas Academy for Math and Science?

I know someone trying to get into that program, they say the competition is incredibly fierce.

i graduated from the texas academy of math and science in 1997 and went to texas to complete undergrad. there are definitely some smart folks there (like 5-6 ppl each went to MIT, caltech, stanford) who could just do crazy stuff like build computers out of egg cartons and legos, etc. anyway...good luck to your friend. about 20-30 ppl in my class went to texas with me :)

As an analysis I have posted the results so far as of today. Everything pretty much happened as I expected and hoped for at the start of the year. Looking at the results I figured we would need to sweep tennis and at least one game in softball which we got. In the track events which I consider right or wrong to be Men and Women's Cross Country, Indoor Track and Field and Outdoor Track and Field. I figured we would need to get 2 out of the 6 events which we got thanks to our Cross Country teams. Everything else happened as expected. I will admit that with the great start of our men's basketball team that we could sweep the Aggies but unfortunately we didn't end too strong after that great beginning. Our women's basketball team unfortunately got swept again. I think the Aggies will still get the last four points even though our men's golf team might be able to pull it out but the Aggies are definitely favored this weekend.
Still everything basically happened that we needed to happen and the trophy is coming back to Austin.

The Link

Not to forget there are still 4 points to be contested. Ladies golf has a 3 stroke lead over aggy after 1 round and the men are just 1 stroke back through 2 rounds. Will be an interesting weekend on the links for both teams and it would be great to get an upset in one or both of these.

It would be great FW to get these golf points. I know I said the Aggies should get both Golf and Outdoor Track and Field points but it wouldn't hurt my feelings at all if I was wrong.

GO HORNS!

Women still have a one stroke overall lead after 2 rounds with final round tomorrow. Men are also ahead right now midway through third round by 4 strokes. They will also finish tomorrow. Bobby Hudson has overall lead for men at 11 under. Still a lot of golf to be played.

Not looking good for women, a terrible start Sunday has them 5 over for the day while the aggy women have started 3 under. Aggy has a 7 stroke lead approaching 1/2 way into final round. the women are still in third place overall and that would be a fantastic finish.

The men are also almost 1/2 done and still have a 4 stroke lead over aggy but are sitting second overall and have fallen 4 strokes behind the leader okie state.

Both teams fade down the stretch. The men have by far their worst day at +7 and end up third behind aggy by 2 strokes. The women go +18 on the day and finish third as well also behind aggy who had a great final day to win the conference (Okie state won the mens title). Both points to aggy.

FW after yesterday I had hopes we might get at least one of these points if not both but the Aggies unfortunately got them both. Still we are catching up in this sport as I think we have more good players coming back next year. Still it is a good thing our tennis teams swept them.

Men's tennis beat Nebraska to win the Big XII outright today. Softball split with OSU and has a chance at Bog XII title. Baseball could clinch Big XII title as early as next week mathematically. In spite of the tough day today both golf teams did finish top 3 so overall it has been a good weekend in spite of not getting the golf points for LSS.

I agree FW. It is encouraging that the golf teams did well since we have some young golfers on the team. Also with our recruting and young T&F teams I think we will start getting our share of those points in the future. But still thank goodness for our tennis and softball teams because it would have been agony having a 9.5 to 5.5 lead and watch it go down the last few sports and enable the Aggies to get the tie and retain the cup.

Overall everything just about happened as we expected this year and the cup is returning to Austin.

I agree with LItnin even though some don't agree. I consider the Men and Women's Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field and Cross Country Teams to be basically track events which as pointed out are 6 points account for almost 1/3 of the total points. This does seem silly considering that football I am sure outdraws more fans live than all the others put together. The idea was to get other sports counting in the competition but it sure seems like it has special emphasis in track events. Regardless it is great to win the competition again.

Cross country is NOT track. And no, I was not an XC or track athlete. But there is a very clear distinction between the two.

I do, however, agree that it's ridiculous that indoor and outdoor T&F are worth a total of 4 points. Give half a point to each and make it a total of 2. I can live with that. That goes some distance toward putting the point system more in line with what it should be.

Everyone has different opinions. In high school I was in track and field and also cross country and I considered and still do consider them both track sports even though I agree they are different events. Of course we didn't have indoor track and field back then.

There is always a wierd thing about the competition. The wierd thing this year was that our Women's Swimming and Diving team got the point by beating A&M head to head. This was obviously a key point to help us win but something happened. I think it may have been some injuries that we suffered because in the Big 12 tournament the Aggies beat us by 99 points for first and we got second. Then the Aggies got 6th place at the NCAA NC tournament and we didn't place in the top ten. Maybe someone can explain what happened but I suspect we had some injuries.

It is similar to three years ago when the Aggies won the LS competition. Their soccer team beat us during the year when it counted but we beat them for the Big 12 Championship and one their own field to advance in the playoffs. I would rather do better in the playoffs than get a LS point even though I would have wanted our S&D women's team to get a lot better than sixth place.

Still it is nice to have the trophy coming back to Ausin.

As expected the Aggies got the final two points in the Men and Women's Outdoor Track and field sports as they finished ahead of us.

The Aggies' Women's team finished in first with 157 points folllowed by Nebraska with 102 points and we were third with 93 points just ahead of Iowa State with 89 points.

In the Men's competition there was basically a three team fight with Nebraska winning with 118 points followed by Oklahoma with 114 points and the Aggies with 110 pointss. We were seventh with 56 points.

So the final score as expected is 10 - 9 in our favor and the trophy returns to Austin.
