Pimp Daddy
Lukas Schiraldi son of former Longhorn great Calvin gets the start against yet another Stanford freshman Chris Viall in a battle of right handers.

Texas looks to sweep the series as the trend of the home team winning in this series continues.

Schiraldi looks to continue the string of quality starts by Longhorn pitchers while the Texas bats look for other heroes besides the remarkable Mark Payton.

The defense looks to continue their ecellent play to support the pitching staff. Thornhill if needed hopes to settle down in his new closer role and get command of the strike zone early as a closer this is a must.

About ready to go and it's good to see shortstop Drew Jackson back in the Stanford line-up after being hit by a foul ball yesterday and having to sit out.

Edman leads off for the Cardinal and walks on four pitches to put the lead man at first.

Wayne Taylor up now in left today grounds to second as Marlow makes a sliding stop and comes up throwing starts the 4-6-3 double play that erases Edman from the base path and makes it two away.

Danny Dekreoger up now and he walks to put a two out runner on.

Austin Slater up with a man on and a slicing fly ball to the gap in right center is run down by Payton to retire the side

Stanford goes scoreless and Texas comes to bat in the first

B. Marlow steps in against freshman righty Chris Vaill who at 6' 9" is an imposing figure on the mound.

He pops one foul that the third baseman ranges over to the fence by the dugout and makes the catch for out one.

Here comes Payton into the left handed side of the box and after running the count full he works a walk to reach first.

Hinojosa up grounds into the same 4-6-3 double play Stanford did to end the inning.

After an inning of the finale of the series nobody has scored.

Alex Blandino leads off against Schiraldi to start the second.
It's really hard to type and eat chicken by the way in case anybody ever wondered about that.

He golfs a low fast ball into center for a single on a 3-2 pitch.

One on with no outs for Brant Whiting catching his second game of the series for Stanford.

Skip comes out for visit to settle Lukas down and probably encourage him to get ahead of hitters. That's been a problem early in this game.

After getting ahead 0-2 Lukas uncorks a high outside fastball that is a wild pitch advancing the runner to second.

Whiting walks to put two on now with none away.

Doran up now is trying to bunt them over, but fouls off two Schiraldi offerings which may change that strategy.

It doesn't as he gets the 0-2 pitch down successfully for a sac.

Runners at second and third with one away for Drew Jackson that took the foul ball off the chin.

He also bunts and Schiraldi fields and goes home, but just barely not in time.

The successful safety squeeze gives Standford the early 1-0 lead and leaves runners on the corners with one down.

Zach Hoffpauir the Stanford two sport letterman is up and Schiraldi gets a much needed swinging K for out two.

Edman the top of the order back around bats with two down
He walks to load the bases as Lukas still struggles with his command.

Taylor up now drives a 2-0 fast ball into the right center gap and unloads the bases with a 3 rbi triple as Stanford builds a 4-0 lead.

Diekroeger up again grounds to short and C.J. charges and makes the throw to get him and retire the side.

Big inning for Stanford gives them a 4-0 lead heading to the bottom of the second.

Clemens leads off the second for Texas again the big righty Vaill.

He slices a fly ball to right that the wind keeps the ball fair as hit touches down on the line and kicks into the stands for a lead ground rule double.

McGuire up now now trying to cut into the Stanford lead grounds one to the left of the third baseman that fields and twirls around and throws him out 5-3 for the put out and one away.

Clemens holds at first as Montalbano at DH today comes to bat. This time a grounder directly to third is out two as Clemens remains at first with two down.

Barrera behind the plate today is up trying to break out of his slump and plate a run grounds one to short. The throw is wide, but the first baseman applies the tag to record the third out.

Texas after a lead double fails to score and Stanford still leads 4-0 after two complete.

Schiraldi out for the third needs a quick inning of work for his pitch count and for Texas to get back to bat.

Slater leads off for the Cardinal and lines a single to left by Hinojosa.

With one on and none away Blandino bats. Schiraldi keep getting behind batters then coming with the fast ball and getting tattooed.

He lines another hit to left and with runners on the corners and no outs here comes Skip with a hook.

That's it for Schiraldi and the streak of consecutive quality starts for the rotation comes to an end.

Pearland lefty Travis Duke is the Texas pitcher with runners on the corners with nobody out.

He faces Whiting trying to break the game open for Stanford.
Duke K's him looking for a big first out and looks for a ground ball to get out of the inning.

Instead a walk loads the bases with one away.

Jackson up now with the bases juiced

He strikes out looking, but a balk is called so instead of two away with the bases loaded Stanford scores a run and it leaves runners on second and third with one away.

Standford takes a 5-0 lead and now Augie in a heated discussing with umpire Tim Henderson is tossed.

Jackson still batting grounds one to short and C.J. comes home for a 5-2 put out and it looke like Barrera might have missed the tag, but the throw was so ahead of the runner that your not going to get that call very often.

A K swinging ends the inning.

Stanford tacks on one more to take a 5-0 lead over the now Augieless Texas.

Johnson leads off against Viall in the third and flies out to center for one away.

Gurwitz up for the first time also flies out to center on full count pitch for two away.

Top of the order comes back now with B. Marlow who cranks one to right and at the wall at the crevice in right fied it's caught as right fielder's back hits the wall.

The loud out retires the side in order and leaves Texas in a 5-0 hole as the first third of the game is in the books.

Duke out for the fourth retires the first batter on a ground ball to second for out one.

Taylor up now and the count runs full then Dukes gets another K this time swinging for out two.

A ground ball to third is a quick inning that the team needed as Stanford goes down in order.

Bottom of the fourth coming and Stanford leads 5-0.

Payton leads off as we find out his dad has made the trip to Austin for this series from Chicago.

He lines a single to center as some things remain the same for a lead off runner.

Hinojosa up flies out to right for the first out.

Clemens batting now grounds a taylor made 4-6-3 double play ball, but the first baseman drops the relay throw for him to reach.

No error as you can't anticipate a double play, but it's an extra out for Texas just the same.

McGuire up tries to get Texas on the board and again the count runs full and he walks.

Montalbano up with two on and two out as tries to take advantage of the misplay by Stanford.

The pitching coach for Stanford comes out and looks up at the much taller Viall and says most likely "we are ahead so throw strikes."

Montalbano back in the box flies one to right and that retires the side.

Fouring innings completed and Stanford continues to lead 5-0.

Duke is still pitching for the Horns as he faces Slater in the fifth.

He gets sawed off as much as you can get sawed off with a metal bat and fists one to first and it's a 3U out one.

A bunt back to Duke is a 1-3 second out.

Whiting bats and slaps a ground ball under the glove of McGuire at third and it's called a hit.

Doran up now is HBP to put two men on now at first and second.

Here comes Skip once more and the call goes out to the pen for Hollingsworth the tall righty.

Chad from Waco faces Jackson with two on and two out and a one hopper goes to short for a 6-4 force to end the frame.

Halfway through this one and Texas is in a 5-0 hole on get away day in Austin.

Viall is out for the fifth as he tries to become the pitcher of record and get the win.

He faces Barrera leading off and still slumping. He continues in that mode by flying out to right.

One away brings Johnson to the plate.

Johnson gaps a liner to right center to the wall for a triple.

Gurwitz up lines a single to right to break up the shutout and make the Stanford lead shrink to 5-1.

Top of the order brings B. Marlow up against the giant righty.

If you have ever wondered what it feels like to bat against a pitcher that tall. It's like the ball is half way to the plate when he let it go. The ball gets on you really quick, especially when they are flame throwers like they all are.

A wild pitch advances Gurwitz to second.

Marlow walks on a pitch in the dirt and Gurwitz goes to third as the catcher is slow to retrieve the baseball.

Here come Marquess and out goes Viall as a change is coming.

John Hockstatter a lefty comes in to face Payont in his first appearance of the series.

Payton up with a chance to tighten up this game considerably with runners on the corners and one out.

Hockstatter can't find the zone and walks Payton on four pitches to load them up.

Hinojosa becomes a potential tying run at the plate.
Hockstatter is really aiming the ball as he delivers three more balls.

Hinojosa fouls off ball four and then flies out to shallow right as all runners have to hold. That was big.

Clemens up with two down and the bases loaded needs to clutch up, but grounds to short 6U to retire the side.

Could have been more, but Texas has to settle for one as Stanford now leads 5-1 after five.

Josh Sawyer from San Angelo is the new Texas hurler in the sixth.

He walks the lead off man as the Texas pitchers have had a wild streak today.

Edman, the top of the order is up trying to push the runner along on a bunt but fouls off two pitches.

He K's swinging as the runner stays at first with one away.

Taylor, the Texan that had the big bases loaded triple that built the Stanford lead is up again.

He lines a single to center to put runners on first and second.

Diekreoger rips a double down the right field line to score one and put runners on second and third as the score is now 6-1 Stanford.

Skip out and so is Sawyer and Ty Culbreth another lefty is the new pitcher from Bryan.

He faces Slater grounds one down the line for another double and that breaks this game wide open as the two rbi hit makes it 8-1 Stanford.

Blandino puts the icing on the cake with a two run bomb to left to make it 10-1 Cardinal.

Whiting up now and with it being get away day I wonder if the ten run rule is in effect today.

He hits a shot to center, but right at Payton for the second out.

Another liner to left is thankfully into Johnson's glove to retire the side.

Bottom of the sixth is happening soon at the Disch with Stanford firmly in command today 10-1.
Culbreth is fooling nobody

McGuire leads off with a ground ball up the middle off the pitcher to short who bare hands and one hops the throw to first for a sparkler of a play for out one.

Montalbano is hit by a pitch to reach first.

Barrera who could really use a hit grounds to short which could be a double play, but the second baseman drops the throw for an error and all hands are safe.

The second botched dp of the game brings Johnson up with two on and one out.

Johnson walks to load the bases as Texas tries to stir up some trouble after the error.

Gurwiitz runs the count full and drives a liner to right center for a single that plates two runs. He has driven in all three of Texas's runs now.

The score is 10-3 Stanford now with runners on the corners and still one out as the pitching coach emerges from the dugout to make a change.

Here comes another very large right hander. He is Sam Lindquist who measures a paltry 6' 6" in contrast to the 6' 9" starter today.

B. Marlow, the top of the order is in to hit trying to keep the rally going. A fly ball to center goes as a SF to make it 10-4 for Payton.

He bats with two down and a man on first and now second as a wild pitch goes to backstop.

Another wild pitch and I mean very wild walks Payton and send Gurwitz to third.

Hinojosa up and a big hit could make things interesting.

Yet another wild pitch scores Gurwitz and sends Payton to second. This looks likes Bull Durham. The score reads 10-5 Stanford now.

He walks Hinojosa on four pitches to put two on.

Clemens up now and of course the count goes full and the runners are off on the delivery which is grounded to second and that retires the side.

Texas puts 4 more on the board, but still trails 10-5 after six innings.

Blake Goins another Pearland product is the new Texas pitcher in the seventh.

He faces Jackson leading off for Stanford who reaches on a pitch off his right wrist.

Now they are calling him back from first and I think Texas appealed to third and it was ruled he offered at the pitch for a strike.

He then K's looking and has words with Kelly Nutt the home plate ump on his way back to the dugout.

With one out a walk puts a man on with one out.

Edman bats as the top of the Stanford order is up once more.
He also walks and the control of both team's pitchers has not been good today.

Two on and one out for Taylor who has had a big day at the plate for Stanford. He pops out to third for the second out.

Two on and two out for Diekreoger who grounds to second for a 4-6 force to retire the side.

Stretch time in a game that may be time limited out with Stanford leading 10-5.

This could be Texas's last at bat as no inning can start after 4:15 as agreed to before the game.

I hate time limits on baseball. The game is what it is and don't change the rules for some games and not all.

If they got plane to catch, then start the game earlier. McGuire leads off and K's swinging for out one.

Montalbano grounds out to third 5-3 for the second out.

Barrera who can't buy a hit gets one by chopping one into the ground that takes a big hop and the charging third baseman can't short hop it and it's an infield single.

Johnson up with one on and two away is hit by a ball almost behind him as Lindquist goes back to his wild ways.

Two on for Gurwitz now as I can't believe I am saying this about baseball, time is becoming a factor.

He flies out to deep left and that retires the side.

Texas doesn't score, but there will be another inning now as the eighth will be the last one of this time limited game.

Stanford leads it 10-5.

Justin Peters a right hander is the latest pitcher for Texas.

The first man he faces grounds sharply to third and a 5-3 put out is made for one away.

Blandino with three hits including a homer is up is walked.
Whiting up now with one on bloops a single to center to put two on.

Doran singles up the middle to score a run and make it 11-5 Stanford and put runners on the corners.

Dunlap from the Woodlands pinch hits and grounds into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

Stanford gets insurance and leads 11-5 as we go to the bottom of the eighth which is in reality the bottom of the ninth because of the time limit.

Last chance for Texas against Tyler Thorne a freshman is the new pitcher.

Top of the order with B. Marlow lines a single to right for a lead runner.

Payton up proves he is human as he grounds sharply to second for a 4-6-3 double play to record two outs.

Hinojosa up to try to keep the game going tops a grounder to third and a bare handed stab and throw was in time and again a Stanford fielder this time the first baseman drops a perfect throw.

The error keeps the game alive for Clemens who runs the count full as Hinojosa takes second without a throw.

Clemens lines out to second to end the eight inning game.

Stanford wins 11-5.

Pretty sloppy game for both sides. Both pitching staffs were wild. Stanford made three errors.

The difference was that Stanford got the big hits when they needed them and Texas didn't.

Puts a damper on what had been a momentum gathering series for the Horns. Texas does take the series 2-1.

Stanford has an extremely young pitching staff that has streaks of wildness. Texas took advantage of that the first two games and did some today.

This is the first time this year that the pitching was not up to the level we have come to expect and that got Texas in an early hole that they never could dig out of.

The record goes to 5-3 on the year with the next game at 4:30 pm against Pan Am on Tuesday because of basketball at the Drum against TCU.

Not bad to take 2/3 from the Cardinal considering how we started out the season, but it's not like Stanford is starting out strong either.

Come on Horns...

I'd have to say if you told most of us ahead of time that we'd go 4-3 against Cal/Stanford, we'd have been more than content with it. Both were ranked teams and 4 were on the road. Not to mention we are breaking in 4 Freshmen in the starting line-up. All 4 are hitting below the other 5 older starters. They're collective bats have only 21 hits in 111 AB's...a lowly .189 average. I'm sure that's not coincidence. They faced solid college pitching and quickly for the first time in their college careers. Give those guys a little time, they'll pick it up. Pitching was doing really well before we got shelled today. Not worried about that. I'd say we are in pretty good shape after what we've played so far.
