Soso and the rest on the board

Too late!

Our recruiting class is done... We had a shot but it all was banking on Murray... nobody will come this way without a strong QB...

My latest prediction
Offense: Warren, Newsome after a change of heart and Locklsley
Defense: Boyd, Hill, Mack.

If we don't get Boyd and Hill, I think we get Baker and maybe Redwine. If we don't get mack. Well, damn.

If we don't get Locksley, I'm fine with Merrick upgrading from a grayshirt. He's a good athlete who works hard. Should be a fine quarterback when it's time for him to back up or start in 2016 season and beyond.

I'd prefer Soso and/or Reed to Newsome. Warren is my favorite back, but if we take Soso or Brosette, that will be fine as well.

The problem is not momentum, it's that we don't have enough spaces for great kids that want to come here.

Mack is a must. He's at the very top of our list. I would prefer Soso over Warren because he has great hands and the direction our offense is going we will need him for that. Someone we're not talking about that much that I think will be huge for our offense is Devonaire Clarington. He is going to help move the chains and will be a big target with great hands in the Red Zone.

It was actually a picture of Warren that put him at the top of my list. Enormous frame with strength, speed and change of direction. I don't know if he stays at RB (his Dad, about the same size did) but if he grows he could be great Hback or DE. If you, look at where money is being paid or that size athlete in he NFL, DE or rush linebacker are darned lucrative.

Merrick isn't in the same stratosphere as Murray and Heard. Murray and Heard played big-time HS football. Merrick played at a tiny private school. Without Murray in the fold, Heard will take every snap next season. If he doesn't, 4-8 is a possibility.

Swoopes looked terrible against TCU and Arkansas, but quarterbacks learn and grow. The posters who saw Vince practice as a frosh weren't impressed and he'd played high school football at the highest level. The kid that led Ohio State to a national championship was in his third season on campus. I'm not saying I want Swoopes to start. I'm just saying in the right package with some practice and confidence, he could/can be very effective.

^^^ Also, note that there is all kinds of news out there (including from aggy reporters) that Hill and Boyd had told UT coaches that they were committing on their OV during the 16th weekend. Apparently, Boyd told a source (almost surely his friend Josh Walker) "I am sorry, I screwed up man" while walking out from Sumlin's office this past weekend. Like, "I happened to commit to UT; Now it's too late," like maybe an excuse to be nice to his close friend. That is my guess about what Taylor Hamm reported from "a source". Anyway, others have also been hinting that these two may have been silent commits because we are the only school that both of them seriously considered and they wanted to play together. We will know within an hour.

Warren has always been a big lean and his interest in Washington (where he visits this weekend) may have gone down a bit after his close friend Xavier Castille (who will be a tremendous WR in college) committed to SMU late last week. Or it may be because Warren isn't seriously considering UWash that Xavier committed to SMU, because UWash was only place where they both had an offer. Once Brossette showed a lot of interest in coming to UT, I have to think that Warren got concerned of a spot at Texas and told UT that he was coming, probably last week.

Then there was Burt, who everybody knew was coming to us. That means our staff may have told last week's OV gang that 4 guys (Burt, Hill, Boyd and Warren) were in the bag already. They all got together and decided that Mack, Soso and Locksley would add to it too. Thus you get the SEVEN that both Charles and Lampkin have been counting down.

Knowing what we know now, Kyler and Lodge were never THAT sure of coming to us (unlike what the Ketchums and Higdons said), so these guys could not have counted them in the seven, like some people thought.

I don't think it would bother Boyd too much if he reneged on any commit he may or may not made to Texas. Hope I'm dead wrong, and apologies for being a Debbie Downer, but I have a bad felling about both the Boyds.

Thanks, you actually made me laugh. I whisk during the Christmas holidays and dadgummit, if I didn't mess around and got sick again this week. Sorry, I'm just a grumpy dude right now. PS no idea how to spell "dadgummit".

So I guess our recruiting class isn't done yet after all.

As the late Abe Lemons said once, "We ain't dead yet!"

Also this recruiting class is still a long way from being done!

It seems like we have 4 to from from the "Secret Seven" now.

Burt, Hill, Boyd, done...

Warren, Soso, Mack, Locksley to come? ... A man can dream, no?

LC -- Hope you get to feeling better soon. You always seemed like one of the positive, reasonable voices on these threads. And I think "dadgummit" is in fact the correct spelling. Useful alternatives, approved by John Wooden, are "Goodness Gracious!" and "Sakes Alive!" When really mad he would go with the compound "Goodness Gracious!, Sakes Alive!"

^^ Oh they were told. Aggy apparently made a big push last night, trying to tell them that they were doomed, as Texas D would now totally suck because we didn't have Kyler Murray. Some recruiting gurus were concerned, but aggy couldn't get too far with that crap.

OK jayakris, I've managed to get Neil Sedaka's "Breaking up is Hard to Do" and Johnny's Cash's horribly melancholy "Solitary Man" off my cerebral playlist. Latest song popping up is "Working on my Next Broken Heart," my favorite Brooks & Dunn song.

^^^ Here is the original version. The Link
Always good to have musical interludes to calm nerves during recruiting. But maybe there is no more broken hearts despite working on it, and we will get Mack and Soso on Feb 4th. At least I hope so.

Hmm... This is interesting, A sudden mini-momentum on the Soso front, just when we thought he was all but locked up by UCLA.

First, I saw a forum rumor about some girl at Soso's high school saying that Soso had to leave the class because he kept getting calls from Matthew McConaughy who wouldn't stop
smile.gif
... I thought it was just some rumor. [I hope there is no NCAA violation in it; if there is, of course it is nothing but a rumor to be rubbished]

Bu, totally unrelated to the McConaughy rumor, just now Bobby Burton of hors247 reported that Texas hasn't thrown in the towel on Soso Jamabo, PJ Locke or Ryan Newsome. He said he felt they were all long shot this morning, but now doesn't think it is so on any of the three. I don't think Bob Burton would write something without having some decent source. It doesn't mean that he said that they are Texas leans, but we are not out. For Newsome, he thinks it could again a morning decision tomorrow from the kid (what is new?)

Also, the other two that we knew were still in play, DB Deandre Baker and WR Dominique Reed, are still on the board too.

So... Here.... we... go... again...

All I can say is "I thought all day long Mack 'ud be the death of me. But Jay found one tonight who wants what's left of me."

Well, well, well, this is getting even better. Now there is all kinds of smoke that Lodge may be back in play too. Multiple recruiting guys have heard from Cedar Hill HS sources that Joey McGuire may be picking up the Texas TE coaching job, and though no effect was expected earlier (as per all the "gurus"), apparently it may indeed be having an effect on Demarkus Lodge now! He was supposed to be an Ole Miss lean, but Texas may be right back in it.

I don't want to get anybody's hopes up, but it isn't over with Lodge either, as is the case with Soso, Locke, Newsome, Reed and Baker.

We are at 25 ships (excluding Merrick) as of now, and can go up to 5 more ships at most (keeping one spot for a Grad transfer QB). Counting Warren in (Lord, I hope he is ours) we could go for up to 4 more from among Soso, Lodge, Newsome, Locke, Reed and Baker. We will probably get around 2 or 3 guys tomorrow, if I were to guess, though it still won't surprise me if we get only one (Warren).

But it doesn't look like we have nothing to look forward to, tomorrow. That is quite a change from how it looked last night.

All these reports are simply not adding up. For example, BR reported yesterday that Soso informed Texas he was not coming. If he did, why would our staff break confidence with him and disclose the news thus ruining his prime time disclosure on ESPNU? I have the same question about Mack.

We shall see...
