Sooners Go Down

I’m glad the games will be in Arlington instead of Norman. OU is a tough team to read this year. Like us, they have 5 batters batting over 0.300, but unlike us none of them bat much over 0.300.

Nicklaus…..0.339
Muniz……..0.339
Treadaway..0.321 (cool surname by the way)
Crooks…….0.320 (not the best surname to have)
Robertson...0.315

Bennett is their staff ace with a 1.45 ERA.
Michael also throws at a sub-3, 2.61 ERA.
Then there’s a pretty big drop off after these two…
Martinez with his 4.45 ERA
Sandlin with his 4.82 ERA

So unless Gordon has a big drop off, he’s likely to best OU’s Sunday starter.
As for Friday and Saturday, once we get past the starters, it could be fireworks.
Their relievers’ numbers aren’t so hot.

Some of their more frequently-used bullpen guys include:

Allen with a 1.80 ERA (only 5.0 innings for the year)
Ramos with a 4.91 ERA
Sundloff with a 6.00 ERA
And it goes downhill from there.

So basically one very good starting pitcher, one good starting pitcher, two serviceable starting pitchers, and a pretty weak looking bullpen.

Noteworthy wins:

OSU earlier this week
2 out of 3 vs Baylor
DBU
Auburn

Headscratcher losses:

2 of 3 to New Orleans
Northwestern State

Losses to really good teams:

Arizona
UCLA
Tennessee
LSU

And lest anyone forget, whatever time the clock may say…

I will be at the Friday game. Probably going to J Gilligan's for dinner if anyone wants to meet up.

Great preview, Chop!

The family and I will be there for Sunday's matchup and have never been to the stadium so we are pumped this game is in the metroplex!

Time for Pierce and the boys to get this train back on track. :hookem:

JAKE BENNETT

LHP
6'6" 234 lbs (Power Forward???)
1.45 ERA
0.80 WHIP
40 Strikeouts
7 Walks

Here's their staff ace, and he's a good one. Freshman All-American 2 years ago. With his 6'6" height and arm length, he creates a big down-angle on the ball for a built-in advantage. Fastball in the mid 90s. Very good control. He won't walk many. Has a good change-up and slider too.

New Orleans averaged 1 hit per inning against Bennett, and Baylor a little less than a hit per inning; other than that, he's kept opposing bats in check pretty well.

"Big lefty Jake Bennett looks strong for @OU_Baseball early today, 91-93 with tough angle and running life to glove side, mixing in a useful changeup and short cutter at 87. Key returning SP for Sooners."

Rankings by a Scout at the Cape Code Summer League
FB......... CB ..........SL......... CH....Command
45/55.... 45/55......45/50......55/60.....50/55
(real good slider and changeup, and real good command)

"Tall, big body, low spin LHP. Strike thrower and commands a four-pitch mix. Cut CH with above average movement profile. Able to throw land both breaking balls for strikes. Profiles as a backend starter in pro-ball."

DAVID SANDLIN

RHP
6'4" 215 lbs
4.82 ERA
1.25 WHIP
23 Strikeouts
7 Walks

Transferred from Eastern Okla State College. Rather pedestrian ERA and WHIP stats--about like you'd expect from a mid-week starter. Throws fastball in the mid-90s with pretty good control. Pretty good slider. Decent cutter in his arsenal.'

Sandlin mostly held Baylor's bats in check, but New Orleans and Arizona both drilled him.

"Six-foot-4, 215-pounder, who just looks the part from a physical standpoint. Sandlin sat 93-95 and up to 96 mph with his velocity and did a good job of moving the fastball around the strike zone. He attacked hitters with an 83-85 mph slider that had some late bite to it and was tough to pick up for some right handed hitters. He also flashed a couple of 89 mph cutters."

CHAZZ MARTINEZ

6'3" 210 lbs
LHP
4.45 ERA
1.29 WHIP
31 Strikeouts
13 Walks

Another lefty. Transferred from Orange Coast College in the Late Great Golden State. Fastball in the mid-90s, reportedly hitting up to 99 mph. 1/7 left-hander curveball. Pretty decent control/not all that many walks. Has a rather pedestrian ERA and WHIP for a weekend starter.

Can be hit, and hit often, by a good batting lineup. Baylor drilled him (4 doubles, a homerun, and 2 singles in 4.2 innings), as did Tennessee. Even New Orleans hit him fairly well.

"I'm really in on this operation from Chazz Martinez. Spent the summer with the Walla Walla Sweets. Now at U of Oklahoma. Reportedly up to 99, sitting 92-95. Slider showing growth. Mixes in a deeper CB and a developing changeup."

"06/03/2017 - 2017 Under Armour Showcase: Baseball Factory's National WestChazz is an athletic LHP who has a bright future on the mound. Delivery is sound / repeatable as he shows good tempo through a strong balance point, allowing his arm action to work quick and free to the plate. Breaking ball displays 1/7 shape with late break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with arm side run. Command / control is outstanding as he locates well to both sides of the plate. Chazz has a tremendous upside on the mound and will get looks from the top collegiate coaches with his abilities on the mound."

Has a tendency to live a bit high in the zone...

Keep the updates coming for those of us who aren't willing to download Bally Sports for a D team production! Let's go Horns!!

8-9 DFW guys on the Sooner roster. Yep, that’s why they want these games in Arlington.

Umps giving Bennett some strike calls on some really outside looking stuff. Bennett is very tall.
