Sooner boards saying M. Stoops has been let go

ESPN says it's McNeill - Oklahoma parts ways with DC Mike Stoops. I'm frankly surprised that Mike was canned - I surmised that one of the under-the-table agreements when Bob handed the reins to Lincoln was that LR had to keep Mike as DC. If the big-dollar boosters screamed loud enough to go over Lincoln's head, that would be an explanation.
Face it - with that A+ offense, if the team had even a B- defense, they would be in the same discussion as Alabama. But their defense is clearly getting an F so far this season - and I'm not sure the change in DC will solve that deficiency quickly. If they don't get the defense together, IMO they face two more potential losses (Tech and WVa). The Tech-OU game may look like a basketball score.

If the O/U on Tech is anywhere near 100, take it.

I hope that WV takes them out. I'd rather not face them again with a Ruffin McNeal defense.
Even Greg Robinson cannot clean up that mess with the players they have. Goes to show, when you have an offensive head coach the D is left behind (see Leach, Riley, Kingsbury).

Ruffin was Linc's boss at Eastern Carolina, was at UVA when Linc called him. I assumed he would be running the defense, although I knew that Bob made his retirement conditional on Linc being made HC and the staff being retained for a year. My OU friends tell me Ruffin works the DL, and Mike runs the defense, which is really fortuitous for us.

I'm surprised Ruffin isn't a DC somewhere already. His defenses always seemed tough and played hard.

Mackovic & Spurrier

First time I met Bob Stoops, he talked about his job interview with Spurrier. As I recall it went something like this, Spurrier pointing down Florida Field, "That's your end and the field and your 55 players. I don't know **** about defense, I don't want to know **** about defense; your job is to get me the ball back, See you Saturday."

What's interesting is that OU tightened up considerably on D in the fourth quarter. Their defensive line became very active and caused those holds. Wonder what sparked the effort.

Never been a fan of Mike Stoops, an emotional hothead. But the change may actually help OU this year. I hope not but we’ll see.

Texas offense went into a shell which stopped their tempo. In other words, the ou defense didn't get better; the Texas offense got worse.

The OKC paper even said as much. They stated Texas was rolling all over ou with the up-tempo offense then toned it down and then let ou back in the game.

I heard Herman say as much; he said there wasn't a coach in America who would stick with uptempo with that kind of a lead at that point in the game. But those two holding penalties seemed to be because OU stunted or beat our man.

Wasn't Shackleford guilty both times or was it just once?

McNeill was in charge of the OU defensive line. The extremely terrible defensive line that we abused. The same one that could not stop Army. Now he is in charge of the whole defense. They’re going to be worse!

In 2005 Texas beat Colorado 70-3 in the Big 12 Championship. Shawn Watson was the Colorado offensive coordinator. A decade later, Charlie Strong hired Shawn Watson at Texas as offensive coordinator. It was a complete disaster.

In 2008, #5 Oklahoma defeated #2 Texas Tech 65-21. Ruffin McNeill was the Texas Tech defensive coordinator. A decade later, Lincoln Riley hired Ruffin McNeill at Oklahoma as defensive coordinator.

I call bull- - - on Riley saying that OU does not operate that way. Really? And it was your decision to keep Mike Stoops in the first place. Naw. Just you f - - - this little gig of yours up and you will find out where the power comes from. I am beginning to think Riley is a pompous a- -. This little comment was an obvious shot at Texas.

Sooner boards are saying Stoops got into a fist fight with a defensive player and other players walked out of the locker room. Riley chased them down. Stoops offered his resignation after the game and Riley declined. Several report that the new President stepped in and fired Stoops.

Riley might want to think about what happens when a coach turns his wrath on part of the team and it gets physical, and then players walk out. Then the coach gets fired. Back in the day the players went away. Or, wished they had. Perhaps Kyler is not the only Mama’s boy on this team.

If true, that would explain an awful lot.

Riley is correct in that under Dr Boren OU did not operate that way. I believe this new guy is or at least passed through the corn fields. More than one person has told me that he is scared of certain BMDs.

The Big XII without Deloss and Boren will be a rudderless ship.

Can anyone imagine Fenves getting involved in coaching decisions?

i think it helps them next year. now they have the time for the top D Coordinator candidates to be looking/thinking about this opening. Riley gets to pick his own guy, not inherit.
