So will Pfc. Bradley Manning die in prison?

They are nailing him for the larger Afghanistan Wikileaks in addition to the previously discussed video footage. I would hate to be in this young man's shoes right now. the military has a different set of rules for this sort of thing.

WSJ Gov has concrete evidence

He's lucky he won't be hanging from a tree. If guilty, his misguided attempts to vet the "truth" will lead to the certain death of many Afghans and probably a number of our own military. He's as guilty for murder as the Taliban who will pull the trigger.

He's an idiot no doubt, but how about the Army for allowing such a dumb *** into his position or allowing computers with such sensitive information free access to CD-burners where soldiers lip syncing to Lady Gaga are free to take home whatever reports they can find. Maybe they should try locking that **** up next time

As part of the armed forces, the Bradley fellow most probably violated rules/protocol and will certainly pay a steep price. Having said that, most of the information should have been released to the public a long time ago. If it were not for the McCrystal story in the Rolling Stones Magazine, Americans would have zero knowledge of anything going on over there.

The administration, in particular Robert Gates, is trying to have it both ways. On the one hand, he states that safety and lives are compromised by the release of information. At the same time, he adds that the documents are old, and none were "top secret."

The Afghanistan project is a fiasco pure and simple. We are pouring billions of aid into both Pakistan and Afghanistan. Much of the money is unaccounted for and siphoned off by corruption. The Afghan army and police force are a joke. I've yet to have explained to me the correlation between occupying Afghanistan and reducing the threat of terror on our own, unprotected borders.

Private Bradley a traitor? Technically perhaps. If this ignites a movement which gets us out of there it will save American lives and help reduce the unsustainable deficit we are running. Maybe Private Bradley should be considered a hero.

If this guy's crime is worthy of a firing squad, then Calley and Oliver North should be retroactively sent to the firing squad for what they did. But hey, if Manning gets off, I'm sure he can fill the time slot right behind Ollie on FoxNews.

He has certainly earned life in prison, you simply do not do what he did while serving in the military in a war zone. Americans have been shot for far less.

I see that the usual suspects are lining up to shoot the messenger. When you're done, let me know how much good it did you. I could let you know now, but I'd hate to spoil the surprise.

Prredictably te Taliban has said they will kill anyone mentioned in the Manning/ Assange released memos. you know the ones that are "Old news"The Link
"In an interview with Channel 4 News, Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, said they were studying and investigating the report, adding “If they are US spies, then we know how to punish them.”

The warning came as the US military's top officer, Admiral Mike Mullen said that Julian Assange, the founder of Wikileaks, may already have blood on his hands following the leak of 92,000 classified documents relating to the war in Afghanistan by his website.

Bradley Manning suspected source of Wikileaks documents scandal grew up in Wales following family split "Mr Assange can say whatever he likes about the greater good he thinks he and his source are doing, but the truth is they might already have on their hands the blood of some young soldier or that of an Afghan family," he said. "

I notice Admiral Mullen doesn't think it is old news.
If not the firing squad then the lowest floor at the supermax in complete isolation for as long as he breathes.

Too bad thsi aussie has so far kept put of sight

Oh I forgot, we treat drug smugglers as heros now. Was that always the military's policy or just something that started in Vietnam? I never changed the subject nor did I say this guy doesn't deserve whatever comes to him, I just find it wrong to let some enemies of the state go free and become cable tv hosts while others get a round in the head. I thought we had a war on drugs, wouldn't that make Ollie a traitor as well?

Not to derail the thread, but Shark, what is your opinion about the Calley pardon?

Much of the public sentiment in his favor seemed, to a young me at the time, to be founded in an unwillingness to believe an American soldier capable of such a thing. The non-veteran public had been fed a pretty stable diet of idealized versions of war.

Even if Calley was scapegoated by the higher command (Medina?), there can be little doubt that he knew he was doing things and ordering things that were just plain wrong. It was years later that I learned about the helicopter that set down and put a stop to some of the slaughter.

I'm extremely hesitant to prosecute a combat soldier, but Calley seemed to meet the standard for prosecution and punishment. I'm interested in your thoughts.

I never said Calley was a traitor, he was a sick **** that enjoyed murdering women and children, but in no way does that define traitor. Smuggling drugs into this country with the help of the CIA while drugs are explicitly prohibited and the president has literally declared a "war on drugs" is within my definition of treason for someone who has sworn an oath to defend this country. Maybe not to the level of Benedict Arnold, but still very much an act that endangers this country and against the orders of the Commander in Chief (although, many believe Reagan knew what was going on). If you don't believe Ollie was involved in the drug smuggling business then I would label you as very naive since there is plenty of evidence out there (even if it wasn't sent to court) that links North to drugs and the Contras.

Well, this argument is at an impasse. You're willing to eat the ******** the government spoon feeds you, I'm not. Two different opinions. Agree to disagree.

Well I spent 3 months with the census, and in that short time I learned this government is an incompetent greedy POS. If it sounds incredibly stupid or outrageously corrupt, it most likely is. It's a giant cesspool that needs purging. There's plenty of idiots that care only about themselves that make this government capable of doing anything
