Should Luis Scola win ROY over Durant?

KD puts up more points, but much less efficiently. More importantly, Durant plays on a horrible team where shot selection isn't even an issue, while Scola plays a huge role on a winning team on a historic winning streak.

Scola's impact on the Rockets is far greater than KD's impact on the Sonics. After getting shredded by Carlos Boozer in the 1st round last year, it was clear that Houston was in desperate need of a PF. They got one in Scola (now you can add Landry). They needed a PF that can finish near the basket, because he was sure to get open looks from the attention Yao/T-Mac draws.

Plus Scola does a lot of things better than KD, many of which don't show up in the box score. The hustle, tenacity, drawing charges, saving loose balls which give the Rockets free possessions. Scola actually has a better PER than KD.

Jeff Van Gundy also believes Scola should win ROY because of the winning factor. This is also why he (and I) would take Shane Battier over Rudy Gay any day.

Thoughts?

While KD certainly has spotty shot selection, who the hell else on the team is going to score? Scola would be deserving, but I don't feel like Durant should be punished for being on an awful team while Scola gets rewarded for being on a great team (which he admittedly, has a big part in).

I don't think you could cry highway robbery either way.

Good shots are easier to come by when you play on a team with other good players.

KD = ROY

Some want to penalize Scola because he's on a great team. Others want to penalize Durant because he's on a bad team. It's a never ending debate.

But I agree that it wouldn't be a high-way robbery either way. As long as Durant or Scola wins it, it's a win-win for me.

NBA.com evaluates all players based on the efficiency formula: ((Points + Rebounds + Assists + Steals + Blocks) - ((Field Goals Att. - Field Goals Made) + (Free Throws Att. - Free Throws Made) + Turnovers)).

Michael Knight I'd like to hear your definition of efficiency. Look at Scola's and Durant's FG% and explain why Durant is as efficient as Scola.

I'm not discrediting him, but this is the first argument I've heard for Scola being R.O.Y. Maybe I should pay closer attention, as this is a slow developing rookie class.

Lets see....
Scola - 52.4% FG, 1.30 TO
Durant - 40.7% FG, 2.97 TO

This clearly shows Durant's superior efficiency over Scola.

And I've already mentioned the PER (Player Efficiency Rating) numbers favoring Scola.

Lets overlook the fact that PER is overrated
Scola 15.42
Durant 15.03

Huge lead. The fact is Durant is asked to carry the Sonics, Scola is asked be the 4th option and not **** up.

BTW according to PER Carl Landry is the 12th best player in the league, Thaddeus Young is a better rookie than Scola and Durant, Leon Powe is the 2nd best player on the Celtics and Amir Johnson the 3rd best player on the Pistons

Durant is probably going to win it, because when have they ever rewarded winning for ROY? ROY is not MVP of rookies, but for the record, no rookie has had a bigger impact on their team than Scola.

The Link

^ Thorpe has been tracking rookies all season and has now placed Scola at the top. Glad I'm not alone here.

He's 27 dude. He's probably only got a couple of years left in the league.

Durant can't even legally drink.

Not to rain on the parade of the infallible efficiency rating, but at a certain point raw numbers have to figure into the equation here. Scola is averaging 9 and 5. I don't care what his efficiency rating is, that's not having a better year than the guy scoring almost 20 a game or the guy almost averaging a double-double (Horford).

But if we are going to talk efficiency:

if you really think scola would be doing anything at all in Seattle if he was alone on that team...please stop watching the sport b/c you have no clue what you are talking about

as someone said...Scola wont even be in the running

jesus f'in christ

Scola has Tracy ******* McGrady on his team.

Kevin Durant has Kevin ******* Durant on his team.

if you think for a second that Scola would be putting up the same numbers on Seattle you are retarded

your efficiency numbers mean jack ****. You do understand that the rosters of Houston and Seattle vary significantly, don't you? There is slightly (read: infinitely more) experience on the Rockets than the Sonics. This invariably leads to Scola having higher numbers.

Put it this way...trade Scola for Durant. Do you really think Scola would be in the discusssion?

It is clear that this guy's love for the Rockets is hindering his logic and reasoning abilities. To say that the Rockets would actually regress if you took away Scola and added Durant or that Seattle would somehow be better with Scola instead of Durant is pretty idiotic.

Rookie of the Year- Durant
Most Valuable Rookie- Scola

Scola is obviously better for the Rockets than Durant is for the Sonics, look at the records. However, Durant is a better player all around than Luis Scola. Therefore, I think Durant should get ROY. Scola fits the "most valuable" more because he is great for his team, which is winning. and no, I am not implying he should be MVP, just that he should be the most valuable rookie if they had that award.
