Sheperd Committed to LSU

Good luck to the kid. Let's move on and close the deal on McFarland.

I dont' know why all y'all think this is "okay". He'll never play qb for lsu, he'll be an all sec receiver by the time he's a junior and he'll be spotlighted by various people of why the SEC is the greatest conf, blah, blah, blah.

you do compete with LSU on the biggest stages, I don't know why more horn fans don't recognize that.

the precedent has been set, and 1 and 2 loss sec teams are going to be looked at like undefeated teams from other conferences. losing top talent, from Texas, to SEC schools, is bad.

No problem bevo you have a right to *****.

WTF!!!!!! LSU has a four star top 10 QB in the last two recruiting classes and we are the team with a QB log jam at Texas?

This years 2008 signee was Jordan Jefferson a 6'5" prostyle QB. Last year was Jarrett Lee out of Brenham. RS will have to kick some serious *** to see PT as a QB in the next three years at lsu.

I am tired of seeing top 10 Texas talent who like the horns end up leaving the state. It is amazing how we almost lost VY in 2002 due to our reluctance of offering him early as a QB instead of an athlete.

Hello Billy Don Malone???????????????

LSU has a fine tradition of wide receivers. Shepard will make a hellava wideout (under 50% completion percentage) and that is the most likely position for him to get drafted in the pros. Many people at UT would like Chiles to convert to WR, yet if you look it up, Chiles was a more accomplished passer in high school.

Only one school I see Shepard being a QB & that is Michigan with their run-oriented spread attack. He would dominate in the Big 11. Maybe Florida, but I don't know their depth chart.

In all fairness to Shepard, who is a ridiculous open-field runner, he is not VY or McNeal, both who threw for thousands of yards and had gaudy TD:INT ratios.

Good luck to him. LSU is my #2 school so I'm not too upset. However, I'm very proud that Mack was upfront w/ Sheppard about his chances at QB. Obviously, Miles (and many other coaches) has no such scruples. It'll be a tough lesson for the kid to learn but he'll be a star at some position....I just don't think it'll be QB.

Horns83,

You can live and die with those stats, but not me. I believe Shepard would have been a beast at QB for Texas. I prefer athletic QB's anyway. Overall, I think they give defenses more problems. But we have some nice weapons for Gilbert, so I'm sure he'll do just fine.

Some posters need to stop acting like everybody else is lying to Shepard, just because Mack didn't recruit him at QB. Many thought we were going to offer him at QB, but we didn't. So it doesn't mean that LSU lied to him, to get him to commit. I think some people's post are to make themselves feel better, about him going elsewhere.

Trilla, you could be right that Miles thinks Sheperd will be a great QB...not fair for me to call him out on that particular issue.

Let me rephrase what I meant. I'm glad Mack didn't tell the kid what he wanted to hear just to get him to Texas. Mack and staff think he's best suited for a different position and didn't lie to the kid just to keep him away from other schools. Also, other than the Horns, LSU is by far and away my favorite team so if he didn't want to come here, I'm glad he went to LSU and not A&M or OU

Like I said, I think he's a great kid and will be a great fb player....at some position other than QB. Better?

Trilla,

You certainly have the right to your opinion. Not everyone will have the same one, and that is fine. I will say this though. If you told me that I could only have one QB in this class, and I had to pick Shepard or Gilbert, I would pick Gilbert and not think twice about it.

Right now, who do you think is the higher risk (between Shepard and Gilbert) of not panning out the next level at QB?

I know who I would pick, and it is not close.

And for the record, I am a big Shepard fan. I think he is very classy and is a great athlete. I wish him personal success at LSU.

It's not close to you, and that's fine, because that's your opinion also. But I see what athletic QB's are doing to teams, and. I would take Shepard with ease. As a recruit, before VY established himself as a legend at Texas, I would have chose him over a QB like Chris Simms all day. Woul dyou have done the same. Not saying Shepard and Gilbert are VY and Simms, but just making a point. All though I'm sure it's been a positive for some team, the other way around. Where the pocket QB was better than an athletic QB. My thing is, it's all opinion anyway, but I like athletic QB's.

Gilbert can run too. Not as well as Shepard but he is no slouch. He has good mobility and will get some yards. Our QB doesn't need to run for 1000 yds. That will not happen very often. We have very good running backs at Texas and we let them run for most of the yards. Our QB needs to lead the offense, throw TDs, and have some running ability and be able to evade pressure. Gilbert does that very well. He can scramble and he can run. Not to mention that Gilbert is an exceptional passer and nothing against Shepard but he is a sub-par passer right now.

Nobody has ever said our QB needs to run for 1000 yards. But I still like what athletic QB's bring to the table. We do have very good RB's, and athletic QB's make it much easier on them also. And he doesn't have to be a great passer when everyone is playing to stop the run anyway. What you stated the QB needs to do here, he could do all that. He could "lead the offense, throw TD's, and have some running ability(exceptional) and be able to evade pressure(like man)". Give me somebody that can be a good passer with exceptional athletic ability, over someone that can be an exceptional passer with sub par running ability. Athletic ability can't be taught. And this is all opinion. Nobody knows what either could once they get to college. But you guys like the Gilbert type, I like the Shepard style QB.

But you are forgetting that Gilbert has athletic ability. And Shepard is not a college QB. Eventually he may develop into one but he needs a lot of work. Gilbert can run well, Throw well, and lead the offense. Eventually every QB must be able to throw. Look at Pat White from WV. He had to throw to beat Oklahoma. And you say Gilbert is a sub-par runner but he is not. He can run and pass but Shepard is a sub-par passer. I would have loved to have Shepard but he would take a lot of work and I would have rather had him at WR or DB.

Sorry bularry, but no 1 or 2 loss SEC team will ever be in the MNC game over an undefeated Big 12 team.

If both have 1 loss, maybe. But I do seem to recall an undefeated SEC team not even coming close to getting a spot in the MNC game a few years ago. That spot went to a Big 12 team instead.

we're fine. who says we need a super athletic qb that can effectively run the zone read to win a conference title. oh wait.

Hobbes2702,

I saw the vidoes on Gilbert. Non of those runs screamed athletic ability. He is no Ryan Mallet, but he has no quickness or wiggle to him either. But I did like that he can move around if he has too. But you would never see him running the ball like Colt. I just believe that Shepard could learn to pass, and he would be a problem for all. And Pat White makes my point. He wasn't able to pass either. But he learned, and they punished ou because he made it easy on the rest of the offense. The running game was made easy because of him, and ou had to play the run, so he made it easy on himself and the WR's. IMO, Shepard would do the same. I don't care if it took alot of work or not, he has time, and the coaches are paid well. But I'm glad we have Gilbert, but I wanted both. I just wanted Shepard more.

Trilla,

I agree that athletic QB's typically do pose more of a threat than traditional Pro-Style QB's. I just think in a direct comparison between Shep and Gilbert that Gilbert is going to be better.

No biggie. We disagree. We'll have to look back 4-5 years from now to see how it really turned out. I will state it is great to be on a board where we can express our differences, and I think we have both done so in a reasonable and mature manner.

I see what your saying and I think he could develop well and this is simply a difference in preferences. You prefer more mobility, I prefer more passing. Both will be good and I agree that I would have liked to have both. I just wanted Gilbert more.

Gilbert will win a national championship as a college QB while Sheperd will not.

That is the difference.

Dirty Martin,

the times, they are a-changin. you remember what happened to that big 12 team, and you saw what the SEC team in question did this year (winning the BCS game).

the perceived strength of the SEC will trump all debate for the next few years. I bet you'll see 2 loss SEC champs picked over 1 loss Big 12/Big 10/ACC champs for sure, and possible 1 loss SEC champs over 0 loss teams from other conferences because there will be the discussions of how hard the sec is, blah blah blah.

wait and see, its coming.

Those who are trolling from CU notice there are not FUs going his way for this, unlike your boy Scott. Different story when hornfans don't think there is a dirty back story.
