Selling on Thanksgiving

I'm glad all the big retailers have taken back what had been a virtually commerce-free Holiday to satisfy our ever growing need for more stuff. Why even waste a moment being grateful for what you have when you could effectively spend your time buying more? And at bargain prices? Or working and getting more coin.

To hell with love, family, relationships, thoughtfulness, introspection and contemplation of diety . Materialism is our true calling and we should stop making pretense.

I'm not being serious of course. I'm angry and I'm unable to honestly say straight out how I feel without lapsing into a profane outburst.

I agree. However some blame should also be placed on the people who go to those retailers and spend money.
If they didn't buy anything the retailers would not open.
It might be a chicken and egg scenario.

I put myself through school working retail. while we didn't open on Thanksgiving we did have to get to the store at 4 am Friday. It is a funny thing> When you are working and many of your friends are there working with you it doesn't seem the hardship it does to " outsiders">
Hmmm that may be an aggy thing.
But when I didn't have to work there I wondered how I did it.

Why did they ever close on Thanksgiving?

A lot of things used to be sacred. Now it's pretty much only money.

Crockett, I agree with you and no one in my family will be shopping on thanksgiving (maybe online but we won't visit any stores). That being said retail stores are fighting to keep revenues flat and thus they feel they have to do this. It is the same reason they had Christmas stuff out for the last month instead of waiting till now. As long as people go to the stores and spend money this will keep getting worse.

Roger Your point about keeping revenues FLAT is spot on. No retailer thinks it will increase their sales. They only do it when they think their competitor might get a dollar more than they will be opening on Thanksgiving, New year's etc.

I do think if they paid close attention to the stores who did NOT open ungodly early last year they would see those stores did not suffer in profit.
But no retailer is willing to take a stand against all the others who have jumped in.

I do admire Nordstrom, they did NOT put out Christmas decorations and won't until after Thanksgiving. means nothing much but I like it

I blame women.

A good article on this exact issue.

I would never want a government rule prohibiting stores and retailers from being open on Thanksgiving (or any other day), but I pretty much have no respect for any retailer that is. I would also have no respect for any person who shops on Thanksgiving. It's pretty disgusting.

And Larry nails it. You can pretty much blame the women for this. Men want to watch football and drink beer on Thanksgiving.

You are all a bnch of hypcrites if you watch live television on holidays like thanksgiving. I have always thought the 4th should be our biggest holiday. But in the reality which I see most holidays are promoted by corporations so they can make money off of them. We also live in a capitalistic society so to look down hypocritically at those that work or shop on the holiday you think they shouldn't is not American nor capitalistic IMO. I enjoy living in a society where I have the choice to do what I want for the most part. If that includes going to a movie or shopping mall on a holiday then great.

Everyone should be free to do as they please on the holidays. Doesn't mean I will partake in it but I don't care that others do. I would in fact much prefer that everyone go out and do all their shopping on that day so I won't have to ever be in a crowd the rest of the year.

Actually Pharm makes a good point ( and I marking this day and time)
Think of how many different types of places are open on Thanksgiving including hospitals.
Does the media bemoan that Docs nurses and all medicall workers don't get to spend time with their families like they blasted Wal mart for?
how about police and fire? how about restaurants?
how about all the workers at all the games including DKR

Gee Pharm you did make an excellent point.

Hospitals for instance may give Holiday pay or allow the employee to take another day off paid as their holiday. So not all is hypocritical. But there was a day when tv and radio ran a very skeleton crew and preprogrammed most of the holiday.

Mr D
You picked out the professions I listed, medical police fire, as being different than a retail store and yes there are but restaurants, hotels, theaters, gas stations are not different and you didn't address those.
They have been open for years.
Football games have been played on Thanksgiving for decades.
If you read my post you know my point was it seemed media and unions are trying to single out Wal mart etc as being evil companies denying people time with their families as of no other business/ profession does.

Most places that do have people actually work on Thanksgiving do ask for volunteers. most, not all and as been pointed out most pay extra.

Good for you, you make your choice. There are many who are glad of the choice to make more by working.

You left out the part where I said "to hourly employees". Do you think that they should have to work Christmas as well? Its not that big of a deal to me, I just think its sad that a growing number of people cant spend a major holiday at home with their familly. If it served a purpose greater than materialism I would be more OK with it. It seems like we are giving up what is left of the little time most families have together for next to nothing.

Me too. And one reason I like my company and the owners so much is because during the most recent legislative session they poured a LOT of money into defeating a measure to allow our stores to be open on Sundays. They understand all that will do is stretch the buying dollars out over 7 days instead of 6, and any new money generated likely would not cover the operating costs of being open that extra day.

Remember the "blue law" ? I do. Sale of certain items banned on Sundays such as hardware items.

That was thoughtfull and well-written. Thanks for the link Deez. The Link

So who gets to decide which businesses should be open and are essential compared to ' stores'?

If it is wrong for a single mom to be ringing up a TV instead of spending time with her kids why isn't it wrong for the single mom to be cleaning bed pans or serving meals or cleaning a hotel room or ringing up gas or selling popcorn at the theater or selling programs at a stadium?
Why are the single moms wearing the vests while their families eat without then( from link) more entitled than the single moms wearing the waitress uniform of flight attendant?

I won't be in a store or a restaurant or I hope a hospital. I will though be at DKR which will employ plenty of people including some single Moms.
I think singling out one area of commerce for opening Thanksgiving when there are and have been so many areas open for decades is the real strawman
