Step 1: figure out who is truly disabled, to the point they can't effectively work; take care of them.

Step 2: boot the non-disabled off of disability.

That would:

A. Save a lot of taxpayer $,
B. Mitigate the corrosive effect on the family, and individuals, in this country.

Agree with all of this. It just has no bearing on the need to reform entitlements. They would be in major financial trouble without a single unworthy beneficiary, because they're a Ponzi scheme from the ground up - flawed on a fundamental level. Back when the life expectancy was 60 and everybody was having 4 or 5 kids, we could keep the scheme going for a long time. Now that it's in the upper 70s and many living into their 80s and 90s and many having 0 or only 1 or 2 kids, we can't.

You are correct. BUT
I would point out that Chop's points ARE reforming entitlements in a big way.
Kinda like keeping illegals from invading. This must be a multi prong approach .

Yeah. Disability is way out of control with people who aren’t really disabled. The limited funds need to be saved for those who really need it.

Between that and policing WIC SNAP etc we could have lots to help the truly American needy.
And Chop's suggestions alone will help SS Medicare. Even while the entitlement system gets reworked

Yep. Disability is part of the social security system.

I forgot that. The number of able bodied people getting SSI is appalling.
Heck a small team with tech help could expose and eliminate thousands. Money well spent.

I do want the people who really need help to get it. The problem is the b.s.'ers.

Now the sticky point are the semi-mentally ill people who can't hold any sort of paying job because their personality is so horrid, they go off uncontrollably on tirades, or they're frequently depressed so they can't work sometimes. You don't want the waiter shouting "F.U.! Just shut up!" at you.

(Maybe that guy could work at the old GM Steakhouse on the Drag...)

I'm all for it, but financially it would make little difference. In fact, you could eliminate Social Security Disability (SSI actually isn't part of that system.) altogether, and the program would still be doomed.

Like eating an elephant. One bite at a time.
