SEC Championship Prediction Thread: Texas vs. Georgia...Do We Show Up This Time?

I think it depends on which Georgia team shows up. If it is Georgia at its very best, I think they are a bit better than Texas at its best. On the other hand, Texas should comfortably beat the Georgia that lost big to Ole Miss.

How would we be in a better position being a 5 or 6 seed? Do you have any idea what the playoff schedule is? Just wondering, is a first round bye favorable? Is playing one less playoff game favorable? Is having an extra 10 days of rest favorable?
You raise good questions, and this is somewhat of a value judgment. If we win the game Saturday with Arch, everything is wonderful. If we lose, some of the scenarios I’m seeing suggest that we would play ASU — at home — as a 6th seed, on the 19th or 20th.

I personally love the idea of resting Quinn for three weeks or maybe four, and giving Arch big game experience. Remember that he might be called upon again during the playoffs, and we all know that the first game next year is in Columbus. By playing him Saturday against Georgia, you couldn’t prepare him much better for a game like that.

From what I’ve seen, winning the CCG would make TX a 2 seed. That would mean a 1st round bye and 2nd round matchup with the winner of Indiana/Georgia in a neutral site bowl game. A loss in the CCG would most likely make them a 5 seed. That would mean a 1st round matchup with Arizona State (B12 champ) in Austin and 2nd round with 4 seed Boise State (MW champ) in a neutral site bowl game.

According to the talking heads on the SEC Football Final show, a majority of coaches don’t want a week off this late - unless there is a particular injury they need time for or maybe they just played a 8 OT game and need to recover. There’s no time to be rusty coming off a bye week when it’s win-or-go-home. Not saying I agree, just that that’s what they said.

The first round of the playoffs is Dec20-21. Second round is Dec 31-Jan1. So, if we win this weekend then its 3-1/2 weeks till we play again. If we lose then its 2 weeks. While the longer period would certainly afford ample time for everyone to get healed up some think it would allow rust to become evident. I don't know which way to think but I do know that an SEC Championship would be a great accomplishment.

I don't want to beat Georgia or win the SEC as bad as I want to beat Georgia and win the SEC and then be able to tell aggy 'See, it's easy. We did it in one year, something y'all haven't got close to in 13 years.

Texas 23
Georgia 14

And Arky....Missouri....for that fact Nebraska....Colorado.....all those teams who bolted and became or continued being mediocre. Texas wasn't the problem, your sorry program is.

More time to heal as everyone is beat up this time of year. And probably more importantly one less game to win. Every game will be against a top 12 opponent. What coach wouldn’t want to just have to beat 3 of them vs 4. To me, it’s a no brainer and also to be sec champs the first year.

The 3 1/2 week interval is not different than the normal interval for bowl games. I don't recall coaches complaining about that the long layoff for those games.

I think both teams will be jacked up, well prepared and ready to play tough, smart football.

I think our skill position players are faster, our defense a little better overall. and our offense has a better play caller. I don’t think it’s going to be a high scoring game.
I think the Horns must turn the ball over less than the dogs to win the football game.

Horns 24
Dawgs. 17

I’m not surprised that you like the idea of “resting Quinn”. I love both our QB’s. We are fortunate to have two talented players at the most important position on the field.
I think the winner of the CCG, getting the rest that goes with the victory, would be a great benefit to the Horns.
I believe, like Sark, that starting Quinn gives us the best chance to win. He is very familiar with the receivers, the timing necessary to execute the running game and screens which Sark loves.

I have no doubt that Arch will have plays situationally schemed for him by Sark to best take advantage of Arch’s strengths.

This game will be a chess match between Kirby and Sark. Smart won the first round; I believe Sark wins round two.

This is somewhat amazing, and it reveals the flaw in the current system. As I think most would agree, the current seeding is all messed up, and it needs to be (and will be) changed.

Regardless, while there is always a possibility of “be careful what you wish for,” who wouldn’t want a home game against Arizona State, and a game against Boise State in the next round?

I'm looking at the stats from the previous game.

1) Beck threw three interceptions. Can we count on that happening again?
2) We were sacked seven times. We sacked them once
3) Quinn's QBR (rating) was 20.3. Beck's was 64.8.
4) Excluding sacks, we rushed for 64 yards.
5) We fumbled three times losing them all. They fumbled three times and recovered them all.
6) Their punter pinned us inside the 20 twice, we pinned them once.

My question is can we overcome the physical problems we obviously incurred and will we force three picks again?

Texas 21
Georgia 20

Hoping for that...

If we pressure their QB, yes he will throw 3 picks.

Jan 1, 1949 Orange Bowl, Texas vs Georgia
Longhorns won 41-28

Back in the prehistoric times of 1949, the Texas Longhorns clashed with the Georgia Bulldogs for the very first time at the Orange Bowl. Check out these grainy, glorious highlights where the Longhorns, decked out in their frosty whites, showed some serious moves:

A crisp 20-yard pass, likely thrown by none other than Paul Campbell.
A dazzling 20+ yard run with a handoff so smooth, it could've been a magic trick. (Was that Campbell to Landry? Who knows!)
Perry Samuels dashing for a 21-yard touchdown like he's got rocket boosters in his cleats.
And the cherry on top, Ben Proctor catching a 24-yard touchdown pass from Campbell.

The Longhorns left the Bulldogs barking in their dust, winning it all 41-28. Identifying the players is like playing 'Where's Waldo?' with sepia tones, but we know Tom Landry was out there rushing for 117 yards, and Campbell tossed for 66. Enjoy the vintage vibes!
