Sark

My first reaction early this morning was, "hell no", but I agreed to give him a shot after I realized that Chris was forced to fish in an empty pond. I called a friend in Alabama who is one of the two people that brought Saban to Tuscaloosa. He said, "you got a steal, but you need to know that when Saban retires, we're coming to get him back".

As the day wears on, the idea has grown on me, particularly considering the other crapshoots.

Main thing is that I trust Chris to do the best for the program. People got upset because they didn't think anything was going on; but Chris was interviewing and discussing with candidates, preparing to recommend to Jay & the board an acceptable candidate.

The proof will come Sept 11 and Oct 9. That's when I decide.
If he kicks *** and has that decision to make when Saban does retire, good. Hopefully he chooses to stay at this supposed blue blood.

Listening to the Steve Sark intro and I gotta say that I like him. He is seems humble, grateful and determined. In fact, his personality seems to be on par with Chris Ash and I think they would compliment each other very well. Couple of things:

1. Sounds as though Texas has been in contact with Sark for a little while now. So, Sark was obviously at the top of the list behind Meyer.

2. Loved to hear him talking about keeping the top talent in Texas and away from the SEC and B10 (obviously talking about Bama, ATM and OSU). I know Herman said the same thing and he did that for a couple of years, but the lack of development came into. Speaking of that, loved hearing him talk about developing those players, something that has been lacking at UT for a while now.

3. Surprised he's already had a team meeting with all the current players, but I like it. He is hitting the ground running.

Gotta be honest, I was a little underwhelmed at first when i heard this hire, but now I'm thinking this may work out this time. I'm still going to cautious this time around, but this just feels different.

Yes, Sarkisian seems a little underwhelming but TH simply had to go. Once TH lost the locker room and fan base it was all over. It's certainly over when your own team is recruiting against you and top recruits start decommitting.

Texas was simply in a pickle, we don't know who else might have said no to Texas besides Meyer. There just isn't another Mack Brown out there right now. Sarkisian will probably be able to say I won a NC at Bama and I can do it at Texas, even if a bit misleading.
He was probably named a head coach at too young of an age when Washington hired him. I think he already has one or two national championships under Pete Carrol at USC. He has had great training, so I am very optimistic.

Speaking as someone who celebrated 38 years of sobriety last October, let me say, never ever under estimate, the gratitude, humility and commitment to doing the right thing, that a person in recovery has. It doesn't matter if they have been sober for a year, 5 years or 38 years. They know that they have been given a gift, one that they likely didn't deserve, and they tend to try and do all that they can with that second chance at life. I know just as much about this man as you do. His life was just lived a lot more publicly than mine or the 1,000's of people I have met over the years at AA and NA meetings.

And just as Sabre was my witness four years ago when I proclaimed TH was the wrong hire, (and let me be clear, I had no idea who the right hire was, but I was sure as to who it was not), I want it to be clear now in publicly stating that I believe that there are parts of our new coach's resume that aren't apparent to all, that I think he is the right hire for this time in our program history.

Welcome Coach.

Also the first time he calls a fake punt and it gets blown up and you decide that it would be a good time to yell, "Oh hell he's drunk again" and you see a 6'4" senior citizen flying towards you, good chance you are gonna get cold cocked. Just sayin.

I KNOW I have on Orange colored glasses, but I agree with Sarl,,,National Champ talent ? No, but look at the skill positions and folks- I’ll not entertain the level of competition in the last few games- but UTs OL and DL played lights out.
Bijon is ELITE,Sweat, Coburn, Overshown, Jamison, JuJu, j Moore’s... all top level talent. Add the b Whittington, Roe Johnson, the young DB... folks there is talent here.
Ask CO.
Plus Alfred Collins.

My Alabama buddy doesn’t have the same level of connections but he is the most knowledgeable CF fan I know. In essence he said the same thing about Sark.

Saban probably told Sark, "You know, go to Texas and build that program back. If you do well we'll come calling when its time. Consider this your job interview for when I retire."

So it appears that in 4 to 5 seasons we will see a money whipping contest between Texas and Alabama? I can live with that because it will mean Swinney will land at Texas.

Players often want to keep their coach - remember when the guys busted into Charles's press conference after the Kansas loss, and cryingly threaded to quit if he was fired? Best response then was "I thought they quit last Saturday morning?"

There will be some turnover from this - so be it. Herman wasn't working out and needed to be given the sack. The firing of a head coach is actually a good reason for the Portal, not just lack of playing time.
It seems like some, maybe most, coaches come in and get rid of a few malcontents and maybe makes an example out of a good player. Of course if SS gets rid of the malcontents, he may have a half empty locker room.

Well, bud so was I. Thank goodness I was and I had people who believed in me.
Without me being a drunk, I dunno but I don’t think I’d be the father and husband I am today.
Let’s not cast stones on someone who made a mistake....now I can’t stand the celebrities who brag about beating an addiction- Because it’s why couldn’t you just get your **** together first, Sark doesn’t do that... he manned up and moved on. I digress so what I am saying is good for him welcome to Austin Steve and there’s a cat in Arlington Texas who is 100% behind you
Well put NR. There are more of us on here than posters realize because we keep quiet as we should. Jails, institutions and the graveyard were in my future until I took the necessary action.

Well said YellowDawg. I posted earlier in another thread that people who are not like you and me don't understand the power of alcoholism OR the power of recovery. You know as well as I do that those with solid recovery are much better equipped to handle life's ups and downs than the so called "normies."

Great perspective that needs to be shared. Thanks.
Anyone besides me find it interesting that we are not seeing a player protest this action? Seems unusual but makes my think, and makes me happy! :hookem: Might should say happier.

What are you doing, trying to make jailers lose their jobs?

:fiestanana:
No sir, I did my due diligence in keeping one employed. City of Austin . 1989. I’m in the drunk tank, and that was like an open room -crazy with a UT WR...in walks a cop that I served in the Marine Corps with. Talk about humbling. I was formerly his squad leader. That was it for me, I was done. Called my wife and 3 year old son “Ummm, I got some bad news”, best thing ever happened to me.
I give the accommodations 1 star, the food 0 stars and the customer service 0 stars.

Gimme a heads up. I’ll help with a double suflex , who says opposing political members can’t agree?

Gerry Hamilton mentioned the Sark hire was very well received by the Manning family. Arch Manning , the latest in the family tree . 2023 qb has a well established relationship with Sark. He will be one of top 2-3 a qbs for that cycle.

He looks 35 in that pic. Maybe it's the quasi-Boz haircut. He's a big dude.

A Husker threw his two cents worth in about Sak, so we had to remind him of his team's current football importance.

A Husker fan and University of Washington alumni.

Saban is a master at rehabilitation of coach reputations. Sarkisian was a lush from the day he walked into the Husky program to the day he left announcing he was checking himself into some elite rehab program. I sincerely hope he's slayed his demons. Time will tell whether he has the mettle to persevere the pressure of UT absent the protection of Saban's iron fist.
