Salt Lick is not all that

Let's see: their sausage is nothing special. Their pork ribs are no match for Rudy's St. Louis ribs. The brisket is pretty decent, and so is the barbacue sauce. They don't even have beef ribs. And then there's the "we don't accept checks or credit cards", the "you have to bring your own booze but don't you dare bring soft drinks", and finally the "please get the hell out within 1.5 hours so that we can make more money". I don't see what's so special about that place. I'll take Rudy's or County Line any day, thank you.

County Line over Salt Lick? You just lost me there.

Rudy's??? You might as well get a McRib sandwich and cover it with Heinz 57. You bring your own booze to Salt Lick because they don't have a beer/wine license. Would you bring your own soft drinks to Rudy's?

I agree, County Line is better than the Salt Lick. County Line's ribs are so freaking good my mouth is watering right now.

i love salt lick, as well as stubbs. i love it when recruiters from different oil companies come to campus cause they most always either have one of those two cater their info sessions...

Salt Lick lost me the day they started enforcing the 1 1/2 hour rules. That place was the home of some of the greatest feats of eating I have ever participated in.

The fact that you can bring your own beer is the best thing about the Salt Lick!! That and their potato salad. I love that potato salad.

My Favorite Things About Salt Lick:
1. the cole slaw
2. byob
3. the drive out there
4. all you can eat
5. sitting around w/ friends before getting your table, drinking beer and shooting the ****
6. the cobbler, with ice cream please
7. the ribs
8. the sausage
9. the brisket

Salt Lick is more about the experience than the food, and that's a-ok with me.

Rudy's is pretty good. I actually get it often. Love me some extra moist brisket and st. louis ribs.

I could let one slide on not liking Salt Lick. But saying the County Line is better than anything is retarded and disgusting. I will never revisit that place and its horrible, tangy, overpriced "food."
Rudy's is Rudy's, and it's good.

But it's hard to mess with the Lick in Austin.

Bert's BBQ on MLK can kick some serious *** if you know what to order. TURBO T-MAN

What's not great about the Salt Lick:

The drive back. It's killer. Plus, I always have plans to go out later that night, but they invariably get called on account of meat overload.

But it's always fun to look back on how slovenly full you were the next day. Halcyon days of meaty bliss.

i think that i am gonna head to the salt lick on sunday...we should have a hornfans gathering there...

anybody in???

you mother ******* who are talking **** about Rudy's need to try living in a state with no Texas bbq to speak of -- like Illinois -- then you'll get an appreciation.

Talk about a bunch of spoiled brats. Try living in Colorado where "bar-b-que" is something called "pulled pork". Try going to a grocery store and finding something called a "brisket". If you can find one, it's usually sold in a 1/2 or 1 lb package.

One time here in Florida I asked for a brisket and they punched me in the mouth. Then they gave me a boiled ham hock, and an enima simultaneously and without request.

I dont like the sauce, but it is decent food, and a great time. What kind of sissy brings soft drinks, wants to, or even asks that question? Leave the children with a baby sitter, bring a cooler full of beer, and eat BBQ till you burst. Not the best BBQ in the world, but overall, a damn fine saturday night out with friends/family.

ive had bbq all over the state. the lockhart joints are better, coopers is great (plus they have cabrito). but the salt lick is very good. it is half experience, half food. their sauce and brisket are excellent.

county line sucks except for beef ribs.

salt lick food is decent. the great thing about the salt lick is the byob, atmosphere before you eat, & gorging at the table with friends.

as far as food goes, i'd much rather have kreuz's, luling city market, etc...but salt lick still has good food.

the salt lick rules all as far as atmosphere.

BTW, if you can't get in & out in 1.5 hours then you have serious problems. think about it, you already hang out with friends, drinking beer while waiting for the the table. if you cannot get out of driftwood after waiting & drinking beer AND then eating for 90 mins then you need to shoot yourself in the head. once i get to the table i gorge & i'm stuffed in well under 90 mins. i sit there, drink more beer, have some cobbler, talk with friends while others with bigger stomachs continue to gorge. 90 mins is plenty of time.

also, anyone that picks the countyline over any other barbecue joint in central texas needs to get the hell out of MY state because you aren't a texan. the county line is like barbecued turds covered in poop juice...worst barbecue ever!

COUNTY LINE SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

only wet, stinky vagina boys take soft drinks to salt lick. drink a beer, nancy boys!

I don't drink, so that basically wipes out the Salt Lick's advantage. I don't give a **** about ambiance or atmosphere or whatever. Give me great tasting bbq. That trumps all ******** about what a great place it is. If great brisket was sold out of a tin shed, I'd go there.

Longhorn Al,

A coworker & I just had this very conversation & he actually went there with a buddy who doesn't drink so they didn't take any beer. He said it was actually one of the most boring experiences of his life & he realized how average the food was when he wasn't hammered. An interesting point you make.

& in all honesty if I did not drink I probably would never go. I like the food & the atmosphere, but slamming beers with friends is such a huge part of that experience for me. If I didn't drink I'd probably just drive on down to Lockhart or Luling, because quite frankly their BBQ blows away Salt Lick's.
