IMHO TX had a great opportunity to say FU to the feds and TSA that we aren't going to be groped at the airport. Looks like David Dewhurst got scared by the feds and played dirty politics to kill this bill.

I've voted rebpublican in almost every election and I will NOT be voting for Dewhurst ever again.

I completely understand the frustration but which would be better? to pass a bill andhave the Fed shut down flights?

"In a letter sent to Texas lawmakers, including to Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, Speaker Joe Straus, the House Clerk, and the Senate Secretary, U.S. Attorney John E. Murphy threatened to cripple the airline industry in the state if legislators did not back down.

“If HR [sic] 1937 were enacted, the federal government would likely seek an emergency stay of the statute,” Murphy wrote. “Unless or until such a stay were granted, TSA would likely be required to cancel any flight or series of flights for which it could not ensure the safety of passengers and crew.”

“We urge that you consider the ramifications of this bill before casting your vote,” Murphy added.

The fact that Murphy can’t even get the name of the bill correct is almost as disconcerting as the rampant mafia-like attitude of the DOJ in using de facto economic terrorism to shoot down the legislation. The Link

So Dewhurst is the devil because he thwarts a bill pass that would make it a misdemeanor for airport screeners to follow federal poilicy? I can see how one man standing in the way of Idiocracy would drive you guys up the wall.
Why don't we just have government by Alex Jones, Mark Davis, Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck thinking up stupid *** things to be outraged about and making that the focal point of all government action.

I don't think the feds would have shut down flights. I believe it was a scare tactic.

I don't need to listen to Beck, Rush, etc. to be outraged at this.
Alex Jones is an idiot.

The Legislature is dealing with issues of crushing importance -- taking a smaller pie to fund school, prisons, law enforcement, child protection, college education, nursing homes and redrawing boundaries for House, Senate and U.S. House. Texas runs a very lean government and won't be able to help many in great hardship. Then a radio talk show host, egged on by other radio talk show hosts, wants them to drop everything to launch a doomed (Legislators are mostly lawyers and know the meaning of precedent when it comes to the interstate commerce clause) endeavor to change airport screening problems that has potential to shut down Texas airport for days or weeks.
If the politicians don't have contempt for the rabble rousers bothering them with this right now they are public servants with the patience of Job.

"I don't think the feds would have shut down flights. I believe it was a scare tactic."

I'd like to think you are right but look at what the Obama Admin did to Az.
Why would you think the Obama WH would pass any opportunity to stick it to Texas?

I would have liked to see what would have happened if/when the federal government FAA/TSA tried to shut down air traffic in Texas. I would assume that intrastate flights would still be going on.
How do you think fliers and airlines would react to something like that pulled by the federal government?

I sure hope we get the chance to find out. It seems to be becoming more and more self evident in the course of these events....

i'd like to see TSA ground all flights to and from the 10th largest economy in the world and the #1 state in export revenues by a mile. I'm sure that would go over well. i'm sure the fed got to certain people and shut it down. they have dirt on everyone. that is usually how this works and why no reform will ever really happen.

Well Theu and General I'm sure that scenario would be interesting radio for Alex Jones. But some people need to get somewhere and a giant game of chicken between the FAA and the Texas Legislature isn't in their best interest.

Crockett,
How far does the federal government have to go in destroying the US Constitution before it would be good for us to engage in a giant game of chicken with the federal government?

How far should we allow the federal government to go in searches and seizures? I am afraid that if we give too up too much we will never return to liberty without violence. A giant game of chicken in the courts is much better than a giant game of chicken in the streets.

I gotta admit that while I'm not the kind of guy who would sunbathe nude, I don't mind so much when a doctor, nurse or someone else with a business purpose puts hands or or looks over areas of my body kept private from the general public. I don't see or feel anything sexual. I don't think being examined by an airport screener is a humilating or sexual experience. I feel free in this country. I don't feel an impingement on my liberty that makes me want to throw a monkey wrench into the economic gears of this country. I don't mind that I have to keep my pants pulled up in North Park mall, that I can't text while driving through a school zone or that I can't purchase a howitzer or rocket fuel. When there becomes and issue of where I live, how I worship, how I can express my political views, vote or choose how I want to make a living, then I'll get with the bomb throwers.

Sad day for TX indeed. Texans will always remember where they were when they heard the news on May 26, 2011.

Alex Jones interjecting himself into this sort of hurt the bill when it came up for a "second chance" last night. Amazing that it had basically unanimous support in both chambers (and passed the House unanimously, I believe), prior to that letter from the Federal Government.

The federal government oversees aviation and controls airport security. When Congress votes for the government to oversee an activity, the states can't impose rules that conflict with the government standards.

This state law would have been ruled unconstitutional.

The solution is to write your congressional reps and demand that they change the HSA rules.

Well, obviously some people on here agree with Alex Jones on some issues, which Im sure makes them cringe.

For the record, and I think most of us agree, there are a lot of "idiots" running Texas and DC, and all of them were elected by the people. Alex Jones being vocal has nothing to do with this bill not passing. If that is the case, then there are a lot of wussies in the Texas capital.

I guarantee you Alex Jones showing up and throwing a temper tantrum both reenergized the issue and killed it with those RINOy Texas Senators, plus moderate-ish Democrat Senators. People who may have supported it on its second chance night were repelled and felt like it was suddenly a fringe issue.

I talked to a staffer who works for a Senator who (would have) voted for the bill, and she said the negotiations with the offices of possibly persuadable Senators basically halted the moment Alex Jones stormed into the Capitol.

We're talking Texas Senators, here. They are the most politically tone deaf people in Austin. And yes, they are wusses.

I can't say that I have had an uncomfortable experience with TSA yet, other than the fact that they seem to hire the most inept people available. However, I do worry about how far is too far and will we reach that point if we haven't already.

Dan Patrick came across as a solid winner despite his failed/retracted bill.

The fact that this bill had any traction at all shows what a bunch of clowns we have in Austin. Regulation of interstate commerce was one of the reasons why the Articles of Confederation were dumped and we became one country instead of a bunch chickenshit little principalities.

If you don''t like being frisked at the airport, drive yourself. Or stay in your cave.

I fly often with my job, for the past 15 years.

I've never felt uncomfortable with any action taken by TSA concerning me.

As someone who is in the air a lot, my main concern is for tight security and safety. Returning home to my family after each trip is priority #1 for me.

Alex Jones or whoever can go screw themselves.

"So Dewhurst is the devil because he thwarts a bill pass that would make it a misdemeanor for airport screeners to follow federal poilicy?"

No, he's a ******* for spending millions to ferret out 30 high school roiders. And encouraging spending more.

"The Legislature is dealing with issues of crushing importance "

Like those dozens and dozens of resolutions lauding their favorite contributor's in laws and their kid's third grade gym class?

"The federal government oversees immigration and controls border security. When Congress votes for the government to oversee an activity, the states can't impose rules that conflict with the government standards. "

I love it. Alex Jones is being blamed, to varying degrees, for this not passing, and making it a "fringe" issue. Really? Hes just a damn reporter, a talking head. So because he supports an issue that many, many Americans feel strongly about, it becomes fringe? What kind of *** backwards stupidity is that nonsense???

And for those that dont seem to mind, this TSA crap does not make us safer. It doesnt.

I would love to see how some of you on here that support the TSA and it's grouping would act if it was your wife or 13-17 year old daughter!! I'm sure you'd just be more than happy to let some TSA agent put his/her hands all over their breasts and in their crotch to make sure they aren't "hiding" anything.

Alex Jones is a moron on a lot of topics and goes way overboard pretty much all the time, but this bill was something that needed to be passed.

The feds are basicly saying we can't be safe in our person at the airport, can't defend our own states southern boarder, can't ask for ID to see if you're an illegal or not. Basicly we have to just submit to big brother fedreal gvt and do whatever they say. It's a joke. What the hell do we even have the 10th amendment for? What the TSA does isn't even a law!

There is NO WAY the FAA would have just down the airports in TX if this would have passed. You'd have RIOTS at the airports with people demanding them be open!

The more we let the feds push us around the worse it will be when we say enough is enough.

I'm crying because I'm so sad. Seriously, is this what our ******* legislators are doing? I cannot believe we elect paid officials to waste time like this. It ranks up there with the Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Lance Armstrong and BCS timewastes. Seriously, who gives a ****?

Well msdw, by my understanding females conduct the pat down on females. By the way do you need to be put in a straightjacket when your wife and daughter get medical exams?
