sac st gm #3

5-2 now Horns in the top of the seventh. Dillon Peters has gone 6 and 1/3 and given up just 2 runs on 5 hits.

6-3 good guys ... I think this is going to be a fun team to watch this year. Some of the young guys lookin good.

Great pitching job by Peters who goes 7 full. Knebel came on and was much better than Friday. He did give up two extra base hits and surrendered a lead off home run in the 9th but pitched two innings of work to get the save.

Horns take series and yes they look better starting the year this year than last year but yesterday showed some disturbing signs. I think this team has a lot of potential, not Omaha potential but definitely back in the NCAA's and challenging to host a sub regional potential and from there anything is possible. It is great to have baseball back again!

I know it's the first series, but this was a big game. Your
playing a decent team and after a poor performance yesterday and getting off to a bit of a rocky start today.
You turn it around and win the series.

Losing today could have made the young kids on
the team start pressing. Now maybe they can relax and
play their game. We did get some timely hitting today and
were able to break out the small ball game with the lead.

A big stat today was no errors. Still some mental errors as
we had our nearly every game man picked off, but I know
we are trying to be aggressive on the base path this season.
All in all a good series win.

Others weren't as lucky as TCU was swept by Ole Miss in
Oxford. Baylor is in real danger of being swept at Irvine as
they trail in the third game of the series 9-3 in the 5th after
dropping the first two games.

Future oppenent Stanford loses two of three to Rice in Houston.

The throw back uniforms looked as good as the black uinforms looked bad on the basketball team. The results
were night and day also.

Good analysis, NBHorn7.

French and Peters both looked solid, it looks like the Horns have some talent in the bullpen, and while Knebel struggled a bit again, he managed to keep Texas in front on Sunday. Looks like Texas is still looking for a third starter.

The team hit .347 against fairly good Sac State pitching (five hitting .300 or above). While their fielding looks a bit shaky, there were five UT fielders who were either new to the team or new at their positions. So fielding will likely firm up as the best players settle into their positions. And it looks like Augie is planning to use the speed of this team to put pressure on opponents.

It's nice to see Mark Payton start with a .583 BA and an .833 slugging percent. And even though Hinojosa has struggled in the field, he's lighting it up at the plate.

It will be interesting to see if Augie plays the same lineup on Tuesday, or if we see tryouts at various positions.

It was cold at the Disch on Friday night, and tolerable on Saturday and Sunday. I could have stayed home and watched the games on the LHN. But there's nothing like being at the games themselves. I vote for going back to starting the season closer to March 1, or better yet, starting March 15 and going an extra month into the summer. Baseball is not a winter sport; heat over cold any day of the week.

Oh, and about Augie's post-game comment Saturday regarding the decibel level of the sound system: "At least it's not rap." That screams that Plonsky, the Director of External Relations, needs to turn the sound down. Once again this year, the noise level is deafening, and you can't have a decent conversation in between innings with you neighbors at the Disch without almost yelling. Instead of the games being a relaxing experience, people all around me express feelings of being oppressed by the sound/music environment. Somebody who isn't a baseball fan (or hasn't attended very many baseball games) designed that sound environment. It's not the Erwin Center.

but not too loud to hear the Ump yelling at some of our players after the Sac St 2nd baseman got hurt

I saw that play at 2nd, but didn't understand what happened.

I saw that the 2nd baseman was hurt after the play and assumed it might have been a result of contact with the Texas runner, but from my vantage point, I couldn't tell if the two players made contact.

Was there contact? And did the ump think that was intentional by the Texas runner? Is that why the ump was yelling at Texas players?

He was yelling more at the dug out in general--said something to the affect of "Be quiet! That's enough of that!" reminded me of Jenkins
