Rush

Of all the three-piece bands listed so far, my favorite, by a great margin, is The Kingston Trio.

I rank The Police slightly higher than Rush and Cream, if only because of Stewart Copeland's mastery of the drums.

Tom Sawyer is a song that speaks to me.

I was a huge Rush fan back in college. Saw them twice on the Roll the Bones tour.

As for other rock trios, I think you have to include Genesis in the mix (although they started off as a foursome, of course, before Peter Gabriel left).

'That was all Jimi. The Experience just came along for the ride.'

Nonsense. Mitchell was a fantastic drummer with chops and talent to spare. Redding was a fairly accomplished guitarist who did a great job of complimenting Hendrix' idiosyncratic guitar pyrotechnics.

Police have to be right up there. Copeland was inventive and technically sound and Sumner, who was Guitar magazine player of the year for a number of years running, could do it all with flare and taste, which is not easy or common. I would take him over Leifson's bloated playing any day.

I won't argue that Rush is better than Asia, but...

Rush was my first concert. The lead act was suppose to be some band called The Hunt, followed by Sammy Haggar and then Rush. I'll never forget. Sammy Haggar comes out early in place of The Hunt and says something like "the Hunt is not going to make it tonight because one of the guys is sick. That's alright! We didn't want to wait anyway!" and then proceeds to kick *** for about two and half hours. Rush was awesome but I always appreciated that Haggar came out early and covered for the missing band. I really miss shows at the old Austin auditorium.

I was full on obsessed with them from about 79-82. A friends older brother turned me on to 2112 when I was 11 years old and it was on. By the time MP came out i was working on my third copies of 2112 and FTK. Every square inch of my room was covered w/ images of the band. Anyone who didnt know me personally just referred to me as the "kid who really loves rush". My parents were starting to get concerned.

By the time signals came out I had moved to Texas and had started my foree into harder metal. Signals was like a knife to the heart for me. Though the album wast that much softer the MP, all the ozzy,accept,man-o-war and punk rock I had been listening to made the record seem like montovani at the time. I didnt buy another rush record for 25 years untill snakes and arrows. I love the new album, and have spent the last year and a half getting aquatinted w/ the quarter century of rush I missed.

RIP, you do know how incredibly rare it to find an attractive woman who's into rush to that extent. Ive never met one. I attended the Snakes tour in OKC last may and was sure it was 100 to 1 male to female. Where we were sitting the sausagefest was so complete that I could only see two women when I scanned the crowd
front to back.

haha....(thank you)
I definitely lucked out...she likes Yes and Genesis as well.

About Signals.. They did lose a bit of that edge. (Mainly due to Alex moving away from Gibson, I think)

But the songs were well written.

If I had to pick the top 3 albums in order I'd say...(Personal opinion)
Fly By Night
Farewell to Kings
Signals

Rush fans rival only Stones and Beatles fans for the pathetic levels of arrogance, snobbery and unabashed, sloppy fellation.

Rush as a trio of musicians is better than veryone mentioned.

Arguablly the greatest drummer of all time, a top 5 basis and perhaps a top 30 guitarist and together they are sick.

You have to see them live, especially now when they dont care about anythign but playing and their concertas are all 3 hours - they are just so relaxed.

I would take Tommy Shannon over Geddy Lee every day of the week. Tommy's tone and taste are just stellar. Notes per minute means very little to me.

I would also take Chris Layton and Mitch Mitchell over Neal Peart, although I do recognize that Peart has insane chops. He has very little groove, though. Different strokes.

I guess it's tough to compare two COMPLETELY different types of music.

I would definitely feel more comfortable jamming with Double Trouble.

In comparing rock trios I'll just say this; all the other bands mentioned SOUND like trios. Rush? They definitely do NOT sound like a trio.

Took me a while to catch this one, but I'd have to throw Primus into the conversation. Completely different styles of music, but I'd put Les Claypool's bass playing up against just about anyone, and Tim Alexander is no slouch behind the drum kit. I love both Rush and Primus, so it's a toss up for me.

IMHO Rush is one of the very best rock bands of all time. Probably the best rock trio. I've seen them twice back in the early '80's. Peart IMO is the best drummer I have ever heard. Geddy Lee is a top 3 bassist, and Alex Liefson is underrated as a guitarist.

My favorite piece (as a guitarist myself) is "The overture of 2112".

I saw them with Ozzy at Texas Jam once long ago and I think one thing that always stuck out to me was that they didn't look like rock stars. They are excellent musicians and had some songs we wore out in high school but just didn't look the part.
