Running Backs

How does a program like Texas, only have 1 real running back (who was outplayed by a back up QB)? Seriously, I understand injuries, but that is inexcusable. I knew exactly where Ingram was running every time he got the ball...into a pile. We have a semi decent running game last night (and maybe decent dbs), we win.

8 plays inside the 2 and we can’t score...wow.

Yeah, injuries. That's what happens. How many would you expect us to have on scholarship? Ingram only had 10 carries last night and 2-3 of those were in weird situations where he had nowhere to go when he got the ball. I'm not sure what's going on but he apparently has a terrible attitude towards his role and I think TH is trying to prove we dont really need him to win. In reality we do.

It is inexcusable for a D1 program to be in our situation at RB...especially us.

What exactly would you like to do to fix this? Dip into the free agent market?

Seriously - this team recruited this past year with the expectation that our running back room would include:

Ingram, Brown (new recruit), Whittington (new recruit), Young, Johnson, Porter, Carter. Porter and Carter both transfer in January. Brown has a stroke before the season that apparently no one saw coming. Johnson, Whittington, and Young all sustain injuries.

How exactly would you recommend that they address this outside of buying a time machine? How many running backs should "a program like Texas" keep on scholarship?

Don't just throw a hissy fit. Make an actual suggestion on how this should have been avoided other than "we should have recruited better running backs three years ago" or "we should have played inferior backs so they wouldn't transfer."

Should they have added another warm body recruit at RB at the last minute just to eat up a scholarship that would go to someone who could actually contribute, with the idea that we might sustain THREE injuries in the first week at the same time?

MG, why would you say 'especially us'?

would you prefer to have only 4 db's?

Pretty clear...we have a long history of very good RBs...what we fielded last night was pathetic. I understand injuries, however we need to have more than 6 rbs on roster...just as we should have lots of dbs.

Even if all of our guys were healthy, Ingram is our #1 RB, and he clearly is not very good.

I was tracking fine, until your insult of “hissy fit”...far from it as what happens on the field doesn’t really affect my live. Those kind of comments are what rivals post when attacking. All they do is get people to shut down your point of view. I was asking a serious and concerning question. Don’t be Aggie.

Texas couldn't score because of poor play calling, and a drop, not because of the lack of RB's.

And I guess you could see into the future and see DB was going to have a stroke, JW was going to tear an abductor and DY was going to have a bad ankle sprain. Sometimes Murphy's Law just hits. I don't know why some people can't understand that.

8 plays inside the 2...yes, we lost because of RB play. Heck, the RB dropped the TD pass.

Clearly you dont understand injuries.

I do understand injuries. However, that being said, after a little more digging, we only truly have 3 RBs behind Ingram, and yes, they are injured...four RBs is a joke. This is clearly a problem.

Again, this is Texas...I really doubt any of our rivals have this problem and definitely have more than 4 options.

We planned to have seven on the roster this year. Are you suggesting we should have planned to have 20% of our scholarship players at RB?

Injuries or not........The first thing we should do is ditch this miserable scheme we have.1) Its weak, slow developing and predictable as predicting a hot day in August in Texas. 2) Get under center on short yardage and goal line to make the defense fear the QB sneak with our 240 lb QB, 3) go 4 wide in the process to spread the defense out. While I'm at it 4) how about throw it up to a 6'6" WR once in a while inside the 15 so the defense has that to think about too. THAT would help a running attack some. Especially one that is hampered by injuries. You don't have to have better players at every position to win. You just need better coaching decisions to out smart the opponent. Sam and Company did a great job with one hand tied behind their backs and their feet hobbled together. Can you imagine what they could do if we had a great scheme and play calling. Before you say, " The play call to Ingram was good, just not executed." I want to say ,"The one play to Ingram was great, but the other 7 inside the ten sucked ! " Sorry that isn't PC, but that is the nicest word I can find for those other 7 play calls and formations we ran last night on the goal line. Those 8 plays ultimately cost us the game along with time management that allowed LSU to score before halftime. The defense...that is another long story..........While I have your attention.....Our players played their hearts out....I'm proud of this football team. They deserve better. Herman needs to fix the scheme and red zone play calling.

Well said.

Let me add that we didn’t lose because of a lack of a running game. We lost because every time Sam brought us back in the 2nd half, the D couldn’t stop the opponent.

“3rd and 17”

I'm of two minds on this
1 there is no reason MG should have a solution for this .It's literally unfixable. He's frustrated.
2 you have good ideas

Injuries suck but they are part of the game but I liked having RJ back there he knew where to be and what to do and looked comfortable doing it

1. He woulda been the starting RB regardless of how many healthy RB's in the roster so your point is irrelevant.
2. He's generally had very good hands and that was hid 1st drop ever so again he woulda been in there regardless of how many RB's on the roster.
3. RJ will be better than KI by the end of the year, but he was a QB just a week ago.

And while I'm at it, am I the only one who thinks Roschon may have a legitimate future as a RB?
Just love this Sunday morning QB stuff, thinking we all know better than the coaches and that our ideas would beat LSU by 20. Truth is we are still 1 year away from elite status if not 2. We are tons better than a couple years ago, and these are the growing pains expected. I agree, nobody could have expected the injuries, and hindsight discussions are always fun. But love the passion of all posting. Let’s just give this some time. Defense is young and will learn.

I think the coaches made a brilliant move by putting Roschon at RB. I was very pleased with what he showed. I'm not Sunday morning QB-ing at all. You might be getting me mixed up with the rookie poster who started this thread.

You are kind of proving my point. How is that our best option and why no others?

I agree about RJ.
