When Johnson was ruled to miss first base on his would be double and an error or triple everybody said the out at first was the result of an appeal by UCI.
Even the announcers were saying on the appeal he was ruled out. I never saw if an actual appeal play was made, where the pitcher has to have the ball with his foot on the rubber and then step off and throw to first.
The baseball purest in me says that no appeal process was neccessary because since he never touched first in baseball terms he never reached first.
This is no different in play result than a ground ball in the infield thrown to first for a put out.
The big difference here would be say the bases were loaded with two outs on Johnson's play. Since he missed first, all runs scored would not count as the third out was recorded at first and he never reached first.
Now say he had touched first but missed second, then all runs would haved scored and he would be given a single and three rbi's.
Bottom line there was no appeal to be made, just a put out at first and scored by how many fielders handled the ball before the last fielder touched first. Such as 9-6-1-3.
Johnson had every right to go back to first before the ball got there and be safe.
The one thing I wonder about is would he have to retouch the bases he had touched on the way back to first since he had never reached first yet. I guess he would and of course he would have to travel a path within the baselines to get there.
Such are the rules of the game.
