Let me get this out of the way first...DELICIOUS!!!!

I finally made it to Royer's in Round Top. The food, atmosphere and people are magnificent, to say the least. The steak I had should come with the disclaimer that "Chewing is not necessary". It melted in my mouth, literally. Desserts to die for as well. Damn good Tea w/ rasberry flavor. I could go on and on and on.

They are Longhorn friendly but will serve anybody. Just looking around the place and all the stuff they have will captivate you too.

The next time you go to those parts, go there. You won't be sorry and when you send me a message thanking me, I won't say, "I told you so" but I will think it. Turns out they have a website too. Pictures may say a thousand words but their food makes me say one..."Yummy".

I love that place.

my wife and i try to get away to that area for some non-kid R&R and eating at Royer's is the no. 1 priority. not just for the food, which is good, but the atmosphere is impossible to duplicate.

I had some dang good quail there one time.

How cool that someone dug this post up. I have gone back and since become a friend to the family. The Royer's are among the best people you will ever be lucky to meet. Go to the restaurant if you have not been yet. PM for directions if you like. Good stuff and a nice drive too. You will not believe the food.

Go to royersroundtopcafe. com. They also have a toll free number. Call it and they will give you the exact directions.

I would take Hwy. 71 to La Grange. I think you take the third exit. Take the road towards Brenham. Round Top is about 20 miles or so. I know it by sight much better than by road/hwy. names. On a map, look between La Grange and Brenham, closer to La Grange. You will see towns like Fayetteville, Rutersville, Carmine, Burton. Hope this helps. Enjoy the grub. Tell 'em Loop(y) sent you and they may be nice to anyways. Ha.

Hey Loopy - thanks for the press, and thanks everybody for the compliments, we certainly appreciate it. JB, my brother, and I are usually here on weekends. Let us know if you are coming in and we will take care of 'ya.

I went to Royer's this weekend with the wife and little one in tow, thanks to Loopy's recommendation and this thread.

2002 Horn was there along with his brothers at varying points during our brunch (I think the Royer's own Round Top) and I had the pleasure to meet two of them. 2002 Horn is a solid guy who has the same passion for all things burnt orange that I do. Just a real stand-up guy....

Anyway, for those like me who have been traveling to and from Houston all these years and have not gone to Royers, boy have we been missing out! It's really a great little spot...heck, the whole town is really pretty cool. And the food is like a pleasant oasis - instead of water you get wine. Folks, this isn't the off-of-the-side-of-the-road chicken fried steak you might expect. It's a dare-I-say "eclectic" fare that you usually only find in larger cities, but with the laid back ambiance befitting a town of 77!

And when you're done with your entree, unbelievable pie awaits. It's simply a crime not to have pie at Royers.

Well, that's just my two cents. I will be forever a lifelong customer....thanks again for everything, 2002 Horn!

Indeed. I also went over the weekend, before heading over the College Station for the basketball game.

I can't recommend this place enough. You really need to go sometime, especially if you EVER drive between Houston and Austin.

Thanks to JB and Micah for making our visit excellent.

sister had her wedding in round top and fesitval hill areas. Royers was jam packed every day while I was in town (like 5 ) it is impressive

My girlfriend and I made the trip out there today. All I can say is outstanding! I had the "Great Steak" and it was allsome. The misses had the pork tenderloin with the peach/pepper glaze and it was great as well. I highly recommend it.

Update: My wife and I stopped by for some pie this past weekend, our second visit in the last two plus months. Well, my wife, wanting to watch her figure, attempted to not order any pie. Micah (sp?) wasn't having it and I asked him to bring her some apple pie. Luckily, Micah over-ruled me and brought her the most fabulous bread pudding I have ever had! It was just smothered whatever juices they use. Awesome!

The only problem is, I don't know what desert to order there now...

This deserves to be back at the top.

First time at Royer's today. I'd love to tell you how great the chicken corn chowder is, and how great my tenderloin sandwich was, but all I can think of is the pie. Oh, the buttermilk pie. Damn, it was awesome.

I give it 4 jumpy guys:

If anybody in the Austin area ever wants to make a road trip for the afternoon down there to eat, let me know. I really, really need to get back down there.

Loop(y), how are the prices? I'm thinking my girlfriend and I need to try this place out. Count us in for a road trip.

Hope you guys can definitely get back out there. My family has decided to go ahead and put the cafe for sale. No doubt it is a sad move but at the same time a very enjoyful one. If any of you come by, please let me know and I will try to be there to give some of you guys the hook-up. I am usually there on weekends and my name is JB, but the good news is the possibility of me trying to start one in Austin with the help of my dad. However, that is not set in stone yet. Thanks again for all your support. But the cafe could still not sell for a LONG time, so who knows?

Being your self appointed somewhat adopted big brother you know I will do whatever I can to make sure a Royers happens in Austin. I just found my part time job.

I sure hate to see the cafe being sold. I can't say enough about the great tasting food I have eaten there. I'll be sure to make it back over there soon.

I sort of had a weird notion that I would take my kids there someday when they are in college at UT. Or before that. Not that I will have kids for a long time. But I just figured it would always be there.

Anyway, yeah, good luck to you. We're going to have to come out there again soon.

Holy cow.

I was driving back to Austin from Houston today and had been debating lunch locations with myself the whole way. When I saw a sign pointing the way to Round Top, my mind was made up. I was a little worried about hitting a Sunday lunch crowd, but I got a table immediately.

After I made my order (CFS with fries and black-eyed peas), my waiter asked me how I thought UT was going to do this year. I guess my Texas shirt gave my fan status away. We got to talking, and as it turns out my waiter was JB (Horn 2004 from above).

I proceeded to get hooked up. JB introduced me to the strawberry/rhubarb pie, and proved to me that there could in fact be a better item on the menu than Chicken Fried Steak. If I hadn't been worried about my ice cream melting on my pies, I would have tried to finish the pork tenderloin sample he brought me. At least I now have some leftovers.

All in all, it was the most enjoyable dining experience I've had in a long time. The drive out there was gorgeous, and I just felt right at home. I'm planning to get back out there with my wife as soon as possible.

I finally made the trip out to Round Top to visit Royer's, and it far exceeding even the glowing review on this thread. Oh man, I'm still stuffed, and it's been about 2 hours since I left the Café.

JB took care of my girlfriend and I, and his suggestions were right on. The stuffed jalapeños we had for an appetizer were enough for a normal meal, they were seriously the size of a small baked potato, filled with I don't know what but I'm pretty sure it involved shrimp and several kinds of cheeses.

JB suggested the pork tenderloin, and my girlfriend jumped on his suggestion, while I couldn't make up my mind so I ended up getting the "Life Is Too Short Special" which was a stuffed quail, pork tenderloin, and angus beef pasta.

My girlfriend's pork tenderloin was delicious, and the stuffed quail and the pasta on my special were too good to describe.

And to top it all off, the pies for dessert were unreal. we had a sampler of Apple, Pecan, Strawberry Rhubarb, and Chocolate Chip, and I don't know how we managed to finish them after our huge meal, but we did. The Pecan was my favorite, but I love Pecan pie, and the strawberry rhubarb was totally different than anything I've ever had before, but next time I head out there, and there will be a next time, that's what I'm getting.

I don't think my girlfriend or I will be able to eat for the rest of the weekend we're so stuffed, and we still have leftovers from lunch.

This place is definitely worth the drive, I can't recommend it enough. It's only open Thursday through Sunday, though, but take my advice and make a leisurely weekend lunch trip out of it, and you won't regret it.

Wanted to bring this back up. Went out there last night with my girlfriend, and Loop(y) was the third wheel. It was awesome, as usual. I had to stop by one more time before the trip out to California for the Rose Bowl in a few weeks and get some good food in me, and talk to JB about the upcoming game. If you havn't made the trip out to Round Top yet, stop making excuses, and get out there.

Never heard of this place.

Hey, I thought she was the third wheel!!!

I am still savoring the flavor of the food and the leftovers were awesome, however, if you are housesitting, don't forget to take the shrimp off the sandwich before microwaving it for over a minute. Let's just say that my friends house smells like it is on the beach, in a not so good way, haha. But the sandwich was great even the next day.

I heard Bud on the radio the other day on my way to work. The sad part was when he said that the cafe is still for sale. But the happy part was that when the place sells, he says they plan to open one right here in Austin!!

I think he also said they were shipping 2,000 pies last Monday.
