Rice to Omaha

I'm not a big Graham fan, after some of the stuff the Owls pulled in the past - but at least they did keep aggy from making it to Omaha.

It should be said again, no dogpile. Business as usual.

You see, aggy, teams that belong there and go there often (there being the next level in a sport, success consistently) don't do that ********.

That is why teams like yours dogpile whenever they get a chance. They don't come often. Sorry you squandered yet another chance. Besides, your boys would have done what the girls did (you are, afterall, a womans school now) did. Get to the main event and get flat out destroyed on national tv. It's just what you do. It's just who you are.

Given how we finished the last three years I take less comfort in the continued ineptitude of aggy. I frickin wanted that to be us ending their season with wins 5 and 6 over the squeezers.

It is helping them along the way and testament to Rice NOT dogpiling. When aggy next has a chance or is on the cusp of being able to dogpile they can use that handy post as a guideline. Yer welcome.

None of us here are slightly bitter over not making the CWS again this season or anything...

At this point we should dogpile if we beat Austin Community College.
But congratulations to Rice for again winning the trip to Omaha.

Graham cannot control the behavior of his players 100 percent of the time, any more than our football coaches can control the behavior of our players.

But when Graham hit the dirt in 2002 so that Omar could have a chance to make the play, he made himself a hero in my eyes. He was asked about it later and he said something about it being the right thing to do to allow the kid to have the chance for the play at the plate.

That makes him a big man.

Texanne, we had a "thread" conversation about that play back in 2002. Seemed the folks who KNOW the rules, said if WG failed to get out of the way on that play and Omar hit him with the ball, Sinisi would have been out because of coach's interference. That WG stood in the way as long as possible to obscure Omar's line of sight to Heuble then dived to avoid an "interference" call.

Wouldn't mind if someone who knows the rules and officiates confirms or deny's what I'm remembering.

As far as last night's Rice win, the team we detest the least won. We were happy with that.

GO EATERS!

At this year's Boys and Girls Clubs luncheon in Austin, Augie said that Omar's play was the best play he'd ever seen. He also said they sent WG a letter jacket for his role. Tim Moss was not mentioned.

Rule 8.3.j

"If a thrown ball strikes a base coach on foul ground, the ball is in play.
If the coach interfered intentionally with such a thrown ball, the runner
is out and any other runners must return to the last base touched;"

Basically, a coach can stand his ground. Moving to either side could draw an interference call if he moves the wrong way (think of the sidewalk tango that occurs when two people try to get out of each other's way). The only way for a coach to move is down, but he is not so obligated.

I don't think WG had time to think about the implications, he just got the heck out of the way of a hard thrown ball that might have beaned him otherwise.
He is a crusty old codger, but I tip my hat to his achievements at Rice, and wish them luck.

I'd like to ask someone that truly follows these programs to enlighten me a bit on what WG is doing now that is just not getting done at Texas. 3 Years in a row with Rice in Omaha and Texas not is really hard to take.

The first thing seems to be consistent talent and therefore not a lot of wholesale changes year to year. Not saying this happens a lot with us but more so than Rice. Also, they play in a POS conference that they have won for like 85 years in a row. This gives them the auto host to a regional and usually super. Also allows the younger players to grow without being "needed" as much day to day. Certainly WG doesn't seem to tolerate the errors/mental errors as much.

Sometimes your team comes together at the right time as well. Certainly their success is not due to fan support or even administration support.

The WAC wasn't that good, but C-USA is a good baseball conference. Thus part of the reason that Rice didn't get too many national seeds while in the WAC (end of season RPIs in the 15-18 range, occasionally up at 6, 8), but has been a national seed all three years in C-USA (RPI 1, 2, and 5 at end of 2006, 07, and 08 seasons).
