The calculation behind hiring GG was that she would automatically be an immediate, powerful recruiting draw. At the time, she was so celebrated, right up there with Geno and Pat in most conversations. I don't know why it didn't happen as planned, but by the second or third year she was here it was clear that she would not be the magnet for players that had been expected. SO, we're having to do it the slow way, get the recruits as we can, try to build from year to year. I don't think people who say they always expected it to take several years to rebuild into a major power realize the cachet and fame GG had at that time, or else aren't being completely honest with themselves about what they thought would happen.

One of my theories is that the name "Duke" is a strong draw for many kids and parents who think it is Ivy League or at least at a level of class and prestige beyond plain old Texas. Of course, that doesn't explain why good players are so willing to flock to A&M or Baylor, does it?

Part of GG's problem was that she was not part of the "good ole girl" network of high school BB Texas. Oh yeah, at Duke she occasionally cherry picked a great player from Texas, but she was not part of the "clan". I also firmly believe that there was quite a bit of negative recruiting from some one (maybe more than one) with close ties to the Texas program and to Texas HS basketball. It has taken GG several years to overcome that negativity and to establish the recruiting network in Texas. I think she underestimated the "Texas connection" and had pretty much no clue how long it was take to crack that nut.

And I agree, there is an "allure" to DUKE and I think it is easier to recruit to Duke - BUT there are more players in her backyard in Texas so that should even things out.

I firmly believe she has turned the corner in recruiting and that it will be fine from here on out - but it is taking lots more time that she or the fans thought it would.

By looking at the numbers up top, we are significantly improving our recruiting/ranking numbers. Heck we have a top 10 class coming in next fall. Yeah, I think we've turned the corner.
