Reviewing the 1st three recruiting classes

Just reviewing the first three classes signed by Coach G and her staff. I’m not looking at walk-ons. The 2008 and 2009 classes totaled five players. Two from the 2008 class are starters with the third playing major minutes. From the 2009 class, big minutes were played by Reed. Flores was limited due to a knee injury. She transferred to Houston after being dismissed from the team following her freshman season. I expect that at least one starter will come from this class with all likely to receive major minutes. The 2010 is also the biggest class signed in Coach G’s three seasons at Texas. While the 2011 class has not yet signed, the players verballing to Texas are significant in meeting projected losses due to graduation. It’s possible that at least one starter will come from this class.[pre]2008 Ashley GayleBlue Star # 5; Dan Olson's Collegiate Girls BasketballReport # 19; ASGR # 29; Hoopgurlz #40 Yvonne Anderson Blue Star # 21; Hoopgurlz # 42

When Coach G was hired she was also involved in USA b-ball (during the summers of 2007-2008) for the Olympics.

We've seen improvement in recruiting since then. I'm happy!!

These are great recruits and as I said in another post I'm thrilled with the combination of the 2010 and 2011 classes, with the possibility of adding one or two more to the current 10. And I don't think people expected more from GG at the outset; she was coming from another conference and State, and replacing almost all of the staff..it takes time to build relationships and I agree that she's done a fine job with recruiting thus far, and is getting better all the time.

My theory is wait until Coach G grooms them into players that will become a winning TEAM

Recruits are just the beginning of the equation.
I can't wait to see what transpires

Here are the recruits, 2008-2011, sorted by their highest ranking instead of by class. The list doesn't include any walk-ons or those no longer a part of the program. Obviously there are more rankings for some than others (I know I've seen a higher ranking for Fussell at some point but don't remember where); Reed was a consensus top 10 and there are a total of 7 that are top 25 on one or more lists (8 top 50). And there's no way to gauge McCoy as most services don't rank foreign players. I think this list reinforces the fine job GG and staff have done thus far, and as other have highligted, the caliber and depth of recruiting continues to improve.

4, 5, 6, 7 Reed
5, 19, 29, 40 Gayle
14, 71, 105 Bass
15, 19, 22, 44 Moore
18, 36, 39, 54 Peoples
21, 42 Anderson
25, 32, 67, 78 Enemkpali

126 Sanders
149 Fussell

Personally, given the situation she was coming into: four entrenched and outstanding coaches at ISU, A&M, OU and Baylor, I certainly didn't expect miracles.

I really like the steady progress in both talent and quantity displayed in the 2010 class and the 2011 verbals. The earlier classes have helped to convince outstanding players to come to Texas. And those players will help bring in even more talented players into the fold. Coach G's personality and her caring about the players' personal and basketball growth will continue to pay dividends in the recruiting trails.

I like what I see that she is building and obviously so do some very talented players. Can't wait for the season to start to see them in action.

Exactly what BabHorn said.

Someone tell me if I have this right – if I have kept track of all the recruiting news the 2013-2014 roster could potentially include….

Anne Marie Hartung – SR
Tiffany Moore – SR
Chassidy Fussell – SR
Chelsea Bass – SR
Shanice McKoy – SR
Kenisha Harris – SR/WO
Cassie Peoples – JR
Brady Sanders – JR
Ronnisha Major – JR
Nneka Enemkpali – JR
Peyton Little – SO
Candice Adams – FR
Jada Terry - FR

You got it right, Outlook...and one year prior is a class I'm also really excited about - same lineup as you listed but without the two freshmen, move the others down a year and Cokie as the lone senior - that could be one amazing squad. And don't forget that additional talent will be added to both rosters.

Updated from ASGR:

No. 39 Cassie Peoples, 5' 7, PG
No. 49 Ronisha Major, 6'3, C
No. 54 Nneka Enemkpali, 6'2, PF
No. 126 Brady Sanders, 5'11, SG

Thanks, Cam.
Looks like Cassie stayed the same while Ronisha had the most movement (down) with Nneka and Brady making slight progress up. Looking like a very good class.

I'm pleased with the progress. Growing pains hurt but it is what it is. Once we have our 1st winning season everything else will fall in line. And like I have mentioned on several occassions we are yet to have a STAR - a bulldog, tenacious, never give up, I hate to lose, I'm not going to lose, I can carry this team on my back and then some type of player. So for right now I'm good. She finally has her recruits except for Nash. So I'm looking for good things to happen this year.

I feel Coach G is going in the right direction. There are too many teams in the Big 12 that surpassed TEXAS a little bit in terms of recruiting....A&M, BU, OU, etc.

Remember A&M had a losing season not too long ago they were 0-something in Big 12.....now, they have won the Big 12 a few times and have done fairly well in the tourney. As long as Mulkey is at BU, they are going to continue to have great success. Athletes like Kim's attitude...as much as I hate to see her antics......she is obviously doing something right!

I think coach G is doing fine and will continue to get better. Don't give too much importance to the player's rankings.....remember the #1 recruiting class??? It turned out to be one of the worst in TEXAS. They never came together as a team, they never played well and Erika Arriaran never showed any signs of being the #1 player in the country at the time.

Sometimes not having DIVAS on the team is the best chemistry for a "team".

Peyton came in town for the UCLA football game with her folks. Had a great time and is even more sold than ever on UT! Hook Em

I'll be frank. As both a Duke and UT alum, I'm actually surprised that Coach G's recruiting hasn't matched what she did at Duke (considering that she built that program and Duke's recruiting has been pretty good the last 3 years).

Maybe I'm discounting the attractiveness of Baylor and Tech but she had taken on UConn and Stanford in recruiting before so I'm just surprised.

Don't forget about Baylor. Aggies and Lady Bears are going to be a force as they become get balance inside and outside.

Its rather tough to catch up to coaches, who have made a name for them selfs at their campus. I think we waited 3 years too long to change coaches. We allow the other colleges in the Big 12 to pass us first. And then we want GG to come in and save us. She had her work cut out for her when she arrived on campus.

If Gail can't start competing for championships and getting beyond the first round in the NCAA tournament, recruiting classes mean nothing. This is her 4th year. It's time. If Baylor and A&M an do it, Texas should be able to do it. I thought by now we'd at least be part of the conversation when people talk about favorites to win the Big 12. Hopefully we'll surprise some people like Nebraska did last year.

Anyone who makes an honest assesment of our WBB program VS what was expected going into the GG era has to be disappointed.

GG has yet to come close to replecating what she accomplished at Duke, both in recruiting and on the court performance.

No complaints here. Thought we'd be back before now, can't deny that. Complaints? Nah.
