rescues in galveston

there should be heavy fines for people who didn't heed to the mandatory warnings if they're rescued if there aren't already.

seeing some people partying on seawall blvd at an open bar or walking down the street.. amazing.

writing your ssn on your arm so you can be identified was a strong message.

i'll be the first to admit it would be awesome to see this stuff in person but to be in a place like galveston which will be under water by tonight wouldn't be the place i'd like to view it from.

goo, as of nine o'clock pm there will be no more evacutaion attempts at all, period. Also, throughout the late afternoon and evening some people who were stranded and wanted rescue afterall, did not get it. They waited too long and the Coast Guard and authorities could not risk it.

A guy I met today has a sister who works 911 Galveston. They had gotten moved and hunkered down in League City in a special bldg. built to withstand a Cat 5. He hung out awhile and read texts she sent.

Cops took down peoples names and asked if they had a will and any distinguishing marks on their body for identification just in case. **** that. Any stupidity I may have had to ride it out would have vanished at that moment.

maybe the authorities could toss 'em in jail for not paying the fine and take over their house!

How about: You get zero federal or state money or resources to rebuild. Your insurance company gets to write you off and you collect **** so you can rebuild out of pocket or get a loan on your own.

There may be extreme cases where people just could not get out. No car, something. That would be an exception but chances are they are not home owners.

For sure I don't want any money I may have put in anywhere to go to these numbnuts who ride it out if they get their **** destroyed.

There are thousands of people now near the coast who really, really wish they were not there and had left. But don't worry, it will get much much worse for you.

Power is already going out by the thousands and again, this is not even on land yet, the worst is yet to come...with ferocity.

per weather channel a few seconds ago, Galveston has begun to get ****** now. Inundated with water at this time, 3 fires currently burning out of control somewhere and the Fire Dept. cannot even get there to try to put them out. This is in addition to 3 fires earlier today.

So it begins. So it will continue.

Last I heard, there were over 1,000 inmates in the Galveston lockup. Death sentence or large liability issue...

I keep hoping our Houston peeps chime in but they may not have power or being online is the last thing on their mind. I could understand that for sure.

5 Million without power in Galveston and affected areas. Could be without power for at least a week. Galveston will be largely flooded as well which will not make for living conditions. Those left will likely need to get evacuated now but I imagine once the storm passes it will be a matter of helicoptering them out.

I am as worried right now abot those in orange county and other areas east of Galveston along the coastline.

I actually am not totally opposed to the fines being imposed for this type of deal, in general.

Every time I try to come up with a plan to implement it in to the real world, I fail pretty hard at it though.

Not a bad concept though, to me, at least.

I think alot had to do with the people from New Orleans that were bitchen about being evacuated during Gustov, saying the government screwed them again for mandatory evac when they should'nt have. Some people want the government to be blamed one way or the other.

They just interviewed some dude who hung out the storm in Galveston. He was in a 3 story building and the bottom story got completely flooded out. They asked him what he would do next time a hurricane was coming (referring to his lack of evacuation this time around) and he basically shrug it off and said something to the effect of how he is an island guy and has lived there entire life and it is just part of it.

I wanted them to just say well then good and good luck find food, water, or a way off this island, you're choice. But instead right after the interview he was being given a free ride from law enforcement, though sure he wasn't being arrested.

There are alot of people in real need that didn't have means to get out. For those that just choose to stay with all the warnings....what a waste of resources.

Not a bad idea if you could prove it. Esp. if they have had accidents that were their fault or speeding tickets in the past.

No. You pay for insurance. It's a contract and the company has to be obligated to fill their side of the bargain. After all, your property damage in no way reflects whether you stayed or hauled *** out of there.

Does anybody know the website for live or post-Ike satellite pictures? I found some satellite pics that I can zoom in on, but they are pre-Ike. Just wanted to take a look around LaMarque.

Personal liberty and individual responsibility is all well and good when you have options...like a house to take refuge in and food and water to keep you alive...and you're not relying on someone else to save your stupid ***.

but then there are the people in the mandatory evac zones that CHOOSE to stay and the Texas Task Force or the Coast Guard or whoever else has to risk their own lives and come pluck them out of the water.

This is the same as low water crossings. When we put up barriers and tell you it's too dangerous to cross because there is water over the bridge...and you do it anyhow...we go get your dumb *** from your flooding car and then we hand you to PD and they arrest you...because you have then endangered my life as well as your own.

I'm a fan of having to pay for the services rendered if you willfully choose to put yourself in harm's way. The community service suggestion was a great idea.

somemiildlanguage,
How about the families of the rescuers who risk their lives to save the incredibily irresponsible people who ignore mandatory evacuations?

Do you think they care much about these morons? Do you think they want their dads, moms, brothers, sisters sticking their necks out to save people who ignore official warnings?

And now there's thousands of these idiots that have to get evac'd on the government's dime.

Hell yes they should pay. At the very least, community service. Additionally, make a 30-sec video interviewing these people, most who are now very regretful of their decision. Show this video the next time and you might get better results from mandatory evacs.

They should be charged for the rescue period. They were told to leave and they ignored the orders. Stay at your own risk. You want a ride out of there? Get your credit card out, think of it like taxi.

Weaker than expected? Where're you getting your info, TxSooner?
This was a borderline Cat 3 with Cat 4 storm surge. I had a tree sitting on my house from 110MPH winds.

Ike was as advertised
.
