replacement coach speculation

Academic commitment, injury treatments, in the ladies room when the picture was taken....Looking forward to the assistant coach being named mainly because it lends interest to the off season, not because I have an opinion on who would be a good hire or a bad one.

Can't believe the new coaching assistant hasn't been hired/announced yet. Taking much longer than I expected.

"Texas adding WNBA great to the staff?"

A tweet from @SBProspects earlier today. Interesting. Wonder what the person has heard?

Guess the news is coming soon. Katie Douglas would be neat. Hey, as long as we are speculating. :smile1:

Didn't Tina Thompson just retire? Hard to think of someone who knows more about playing the C/PF position.

My bet is on one of the following:

Tamika Catchings - Retiring after the 2016 Olympics, but it's not uncharted territory for a Wnba player to be an assistant in the off season. (Also a phenomenal way to keep the duncanville pipeline open)

Theresa Weatherspoon- former LaTech assistant Wnba hall of famer

Katie Smith- WNBA great who also calls some UT games on LHN. Current assistant with the NY Liberty

Tina Thompson- Wnba great and former Houston Comet.

I don't think it's someone fresh out of the WNBA, but rather someone who played in the league and has been coaching in the college ranks recently.

I know Tina Thompson also helps out with some Houston kids. She tweets quite a bit about Jordan Hosey, Brianna Turner, etc. She would be a great addition to the staff. Well, you know, while we are speculating...

Edwina had a nice 11 year pro career, six of those in the WNBA while also playing overseas. And she certainly had a great career at Texas, though I still think that earlier tweet had to do with a recruit. Or at least it sounded more like the type of thing you'd say about landing a top player as opposed to a new assistant. If it is someone from the collegiate coaching ranks, Edwina probably has more experience than some of the others mentioned previously; 4-5 years as an assistant at Texas, New Mexico and TCU. Whoever it is, I sure hope we hear something soon!

Tina Thompson was always my favorite player when I followed the Comets back in the day. She was a defensive warrior. I had no idea she was still in Houston and not California or that she had any interest in coaching. It would be super to see her at UT.

If it were any of those former WNBA players, you would think it could have been announced already. This delay (in my eyes) smells of waiting until new assistant coach either has time to tell current players he/she is leaving, or some sort of contractual obligations through a certain calendar date.

I think it could be Fran Harris. She was on the championship Comets team, right? Plus, as someone had already pointed out, her bio headline on TexasSports.com went "blank" several weeks ago, and was still blank a couple of days ago. I'd like to have another coach with UT roots. Jamie, Fran, Edwina, and Tai all had solid, though perhaps somewhat short lived WNBA careers.

If it was going to be Fran Harris, I sure can't see a reason for such a delayed announcement as she is already a UT employee.

It really depends on whether the language of that tweet was a direct quote from someone at Texas; if so I can't see it being a former Horn. If you're going to be as specific as saying the new coach is an WNBA great, I think you'd also identity her as a former Texas player if that was the case. The Horns that had the best pro careers (Davis, Lloyd) only saw a season or two of WNBA action prior to their retirements. Harris, Brown, Carey etc all had solid careers but don't qualify as WNBA greats.

I am not going to worry unless a coach is not named by the end of this month. Then I will start wondering what the holdup is. Really curious no one has been named so far, though.

Beginning to wonder if it might be a compensation negotiation issue. According to 2013 records, Travis Mays was making $140K, George Washington at $90K. If they are going after a WNBA great, might be trying to get up to WNBA max ($107K) for both new hire and Washington. No inside info whatsoever just, as the thread title says, speculation.
