Remember the new grass in Zilker Park?

From today's Statesman:

I'm no lawn expert..........but it would seem to me that they could sow some winter rye over that very easily, which would stay green all winter, and then give way to whatever they have planted there originally.

I ran a very enjoyable 10k loop around the lake Saturday.

The metal detecting crowd appears to be appreciating the park's unimprovements.

OK, Converse...of course I just told them what happened. That doesn't really mean a whole lot or make much sense to a 3 yo, who just comes right back with "But why did they do that? Why can't we go to Rock Island?"

At any rate, that portion of the park has been closed for most of a year now and is in far worse condition than when it was first shut down. There's no end really in sight. It really is quite simple. If there are people out there who can't understand why many park users are legitimately upset about that, then they are truly clueless or are just being purposefully obtuse.

There must have been tens of thousands of people at the concerts. That has got to exceed the number that would be kicking the ball around or letting their dogs pollute the lake.

I am definitely in favor of free access and I do not care for concert promoters, but my guess is that, overall, more taxpayers are served by the concerts.

ACL averages over 65,000 a day over 3 days. Austin's premier park is going to be closed the remainder of this year. Book it. I find it laughable that people think that the park gets more damage from soccer teams and dog walkers. The Great Lawn looks more suited for monster truck mudding then anything the Great Lawn was ever intended for. Oh well...crossing my fingers for spring 2010.

The Great Lawn will be re-opened Friday for Public use:
The Link

There is an acre of grass that will need to be re-sodded, at a cost of $15K to C3.

I could have sworn that someone suggested it would be open by the end of the month earlier in this thread.....

hmm, i guess i will have to revise my statemnts.

Good news that it is re-opening. I do indeed hope that the grass that looks dead is just dormant. My lawn hasn't gone dormant yet, but i am sure it is different grass.

i have to backtrack on a lot of my posts in this thread.

The Great Lawn looks fantastic right now, especially for June. I am sure the spring rains and early summer rains have helped a lot. I know it has for my lawn, with very little watering so far this spring and summer.
