Remember the new grass in Zilker Park?

Remember the 1-2 million dollar grass project that was installed at Zilker Park?

It's gone.

Just drove down Barton Springs on the way to work ... nothing but a huge field of mud.

Sweet.

Not to mention they kept the soccer fields closed all year so no one would step on to their precious grass reclamation project. Destroyed in 72 hours.

Also, water restrictions all summer were eased for that project. I can't tell you how many times this summer i ran by those fields on the hike and bike trail with the sprinklers going full blast. Middle of the afternoon.

C3 put up $2.5 million for that project, so not so much taxpayer money.

In addition, C3 agreed to repair any damage done to the park as a result of the festival. That is a yearly commitment that C3 makes to the city of Austin in exchange for the use of the park.

In other words, go worry about something else.....like how bad the Cowboys are this year.

And...the water used to irrigate Zilker is pumped directly out of Lady Bird Lake...rationing does not apply.

Did any of y'all see that turf befoe ACL? It was pristine. Best it's been in the 30+ years I've lived here. Gone, just like that.

Man I couldn't imagine what the porta pottys looked like caked in mud. lol

But Mandingo is correct. Taxpayers paid for a park that private investors get to use. Nice to know my tax dollars are being spent well. lol

football pitches should be reserved for football and nothing else.
If they want to have ACL then move it to a music venue, not a public park where they are trashing the pitch.

This is about as offensive a thing as I have heard.

Hell, they could move it to DKR now that they play on plastic rather than a natural pitch.... screw ACL...

I was there. Underneath all the mud, you could still see the grass. The turf was not coming up in chunks. The compost was rising to the top, most likely due to insufficient time for it to settle.

That park will be back at 95% of what it was by the end of the month. Just watch.

And how come nobody talks about all of the tax dollars that the festival itself raises each year? It's a boon to the economy.

Nobody's saying ACL doesn't raise money. We're having to sacrifice our best park for it.

Is it worth it?

I don't think so.

Isn't there anywhere else we can hold ACL Fest?

In short, no. Unless you want it to be the Round Rock or Cedar Park City Limits festival. Pass.

Austin has a plethora of parks, but Zilker is the only one that fits the bill for ACL, for all of the same reasons that it gets used for trail of lights.

Once the grass pops back in a few weeks, it'll be open and ready for use for the next 11 months.

Now they're saying the park will be closed 'til at least the end end of the month . It was going to originally be just under two weeks for teardown. The Link

Lots of interesting comments under the story.

I don't think some people realize how big the venue is. There are four BIG stages and 3/4 smaller stages. Remember South Park Medows? There are 4 of those sized venues plus the smaller stages/food court.

And yes, Peral Jam was THAT good.

I guess you COULD do it on campus with DKR/ Soccer stadium/ practice field/ clark field but good luck getting that past the regents and mack brown.

Look, it was just bad luck. The field needed improving, because the heavy use it got turned it into a dust bowl. After months of getting the field in pristine shape, during a drought we get a flood. It was bad timing, bad luck, an unfortunate occurance.
It looks like the grass was not killed, so hopefully, most will be back in the near future for use by those who feel the park is for their personal use, and not for use by others.
