'Red River Shootout's decline'

It is still my favorite game of the year. Maybe more so now than ever now that the OU-Nebraska rivalry is more interesting in the courtroom than on the field.

I don't think it's true now, but back to the wood-shedding we got from the okies twice a few years ago, I don't think they could all be chalked up to too many mistakes. I think the okies intimidated those Texas teams, something I didn't ever think I'd say about Texas vs. ou.

Last year, it was untimely mistakes...I hope we got it out of our system.

Texas-ou is still a huge rivalry, but it will be more of one when we win more than three games a decade against the okies. Mandel is on target.

2 teams that are seemingly top 10 year in year out and if they win this game they are a shot at winning Big 12 and going all the way. Losing a game pre RRS makes the game a little less meaningful. I know in UT's case they have been undefeated 4 times since 00 going into OU game, 3 times they have lost once to an OOC team and only 1 time have lost to a Big 12 team beforehand and that was last year to K-state. Loses to Arkansas, OSU (went on to title game), and Stanford for those OOC games. Those OOC loses don't affect the Big 12 title race. And this game thus still has huge importance on Big 12 title race which historically has been a huge factor in deciding who goes to the MNC game. Big game. Sorry Stewie.

The game is getting bigger and bigger and that is one big reason they are rennovating the cotton bowl. It will increase attendance and only make it more of a special event. How many of these "big rivalry games" are played on the same field year in and year out?

I agree with the article. He's speaking from a national perspective. The Big 12 has been a two team conference the last several years, but that's no longer the case. UT and OU have been slipping a bit while Tech, Mizzou, and KU are rising. It has nothing to do with the passion or hate in the rivalry cause **** OU and those landthieving, trailer park, dumbass, incestuous ********

Didn't that "slipping" OU team take that "rising" Mizzou team to the woodshed twice last season? I think the jury is still out on all three of those "rising" teams.

I see why the game has lost its luster to Texas fans.

After all, it was all the way back in 2005 that Texas had its largest margin of victory in the history of the series while riding the brakes the whole second half.

Let's see Kansas and Missouri put together two good seasons in a row before we start calling them Big 12 powers. The power is still in the south (and unfortunately has a Crimson hue).

Times since 1950 that Texas was undefeated going in, won the RRS, and then won a MNC- (4): '63, '69, '70, and '05
Times OU did same- (7): '50, '55, '56, '74, '75, '85, and '00

Times since 1950 that Texas came in undefeated, won the RRS, and found itself playing for (and losing) a MNC at the end of the season- (2): '77 and '83
Times OU did same- (3): '87, '03, and '04

Times Texas came in undefeated, won, and was out of MNC contention at season's end- (10): '51, '58, '59, '61, '64, '65, '79, '80, and '81.
Times for OU- (8): '54, '57, '66, '71, '72, '78, '01, and '02

In other words, in the last 58 years, when one of the teams comes in undefeated and wins, they find themselves playing for a MNC at the season's end almost half of the time. This is, and was, and will be a huge game.

When has the Big 12 ever been just a two horse race? Nebraska, K-State, Colorado, and A&M have all won Big 12 championships. There have always been other contenders besides OU and Texas.

I seriously hope the okies are expecting a cakewalk in Dallas this year...Texas will eventually be better this year than the preseason rankings indicate.

...depends on how quickly the defense comes together under Coach Bleep engineer. If they sort out the pass defense problems of the last couple of years by the end of September, early October should be very interesting for both us and zero u.
