Recruiting anyone at PSU?

I realize we don't usually recruit the same players as PSU, and many that leave may go to TOSU and Michigan, but has anyone seen anything regarding any players considering Texas? I guess the other question would be if we hit our scholarship limit or not.

I heard VTech, USC, Georgia and others are already working on this.

There was some chatter on the radio this a.m. that NCAA might allow schools who were interested in PSU players to take a schollie from next year's availability and use it this year to facilitate this process.

Of course, I also heard that some schools were contacting PSU players directly, when NCAA rules would have them going through the PSU coach.

Bottom line - college football may just continue to shoot itself in the foot where public perception is concerned.

notnative, the NCAA president mentioned it in his speech that teams can take a player without it affecting their current scholarship limit. it would affect next years. You can be at your limit and poach away.

I'm sure if Mack could find someone who could help in a position of need, he'll do it. But he won't do it just to add space to the roster. If he finds an O-line man who could help, he'll nab him. We need more depth.

No doubt Urban Meyer has been in touch with every one of their star players and commits.

How ironic that tOSU, who is on probation, may ultimately be the biggest beneficiary of all this. I think they went head-to-head with PSU for a number of those players and commits, and now they pick them up on the flip-flop.

From a Big 12 perspective, it will probably also help WVU for those same reasons. And with PSU suffering the near-death penalty, those Pennsylvania recruiting grounds will be mighty fertile for WVU, tOSU, and Michigan.

Mark Richt has said he is looking at a couple. You can believe that poster boy for Hitler youth in College Park is already in State College. Rutgers needs help as does Minnesota, Indiana, & Illinois.

A school under sanctions will have the player(s) count against their 85 limit.

As for Texas - Big and slow, thank you, no

My first thought regarding taking a PSU committed player is that UT should not pursue any PSU players or committed players unless they make first contact. Just seems unseemly to go after these athletes.

I had not heard that teams under NCAA sanctions would not be allowed to exced the 85 limit with a PSU athlete. Seems reasonable to me.

ESPN's Joe Schad tweeted yesterday...

Joe Schad @schadjoe
One coach: "If you're not on the phone today with Penn State players, parents and high school coaches, what are you thinking about? Golf?"

It's clear that Mack wasn't thinking about Golf...

#Kansas coach Charlie Weis on Penn State transfers: "I think any coach who didn't do their homework [on the Penn State roster] missed out."

247Sports is reporting that Texas feels comfortable that they will be able to bypass the 25 annual scholarship limit as it relates to any PSU transfers.

They hear that Texas is interested in at least one player. It is too soon to say more than that.... "there is real smoke here if interest is reciprocal."

Rivals article

"That said, the NCAA has taken some steps to make the transition as smooth as possible for any Penn State players who choose to transfer.

As long as a player informs Penn State of his interest in transferring, the school can't restrict where he goes. Even a move to a Big Ten rival is permitted. Any schools interested in pursuing current Nittany Lions must inform Penn State.

Even if Penn State players made five official visits during their initial recruiting process - the maximum allowed by the NCAA - they're allowed to continue making official or unofficial visits during this second college search. "

Explanation of NCAA Sanctions: www.ncaa.com/news/ncaa/article/2012-07-23/explanation-penn-st-sanctions does not answer question about first contact

Actual NCAA document
does not address transfer contacts

I guess that various schools have contacted the NCAA to learn the "accepted" method of contacting potential transfers. verbal commitment athletes should require no special contact method as they have not signed anything committing them to PSU...fair game.

Charlie Weis, KU, and others say they are not waiting around to be contacted by the players. They will make the first move if an interest exists.

Anthony Fera

This guy would be a great addition for us if Mack went after him. He played HS ball in Houston and is on the Lou Groza award list.

It's almost like the NCAA put an estate sale sign in front of the Penn State campus.

The link says his home town is Cypress, Texas, and he played high school ball in Houston. If he could live in Houston, he would love Austin.
Best punter/placekicker in the nation (?), with one year eligibility remaining-we could use him for one year. Good choice.
There could be someone with a year or two remaining that would be a good fit, but I suppose it is a long shot that we would go after anyone there.

The most shocking thing to me is rivals has their recruiting class for this year rated at 14 in the nation. Thats amazing considering these kids realized the school was becoming a punch line and was about to get the wood put to them. If they can amass a respectable class in the midst of the biggest scandal in college sports, it wouldnt be too far off that they could retain most of the players they have now

He kicks it into the parking lot? Kicks it through the uprights on kickoffs? Maybe he could kick it so hard it would knock out the sound on Godzillatron. If he does that, I say let's build a statue of him immediately.

accuratehorn - yet another reason we need to be able to give upvotes!!!

247Sports has confirmed that Texas & PSU kicker/punter Anthony Fera have talked and there is mutual interests between both Fera & Texas.

Fera, who was originally from Cypress Texas and attended St. Pius X prior to going to State College, Penn., connected on 14 of 17 field goal attempts with a long of 46 yards, and punted 64 times with an average of 42 yards per punt in 2011. Fera's #'s as a sophomore earned him 2nd team-All Big 10 honors.

Chris Sailer, one of the nation’s most respected kicking coaches, said Fera is currently “looking at his options” when spoken to today at the Junior Rank Camp. ... Fera is “a special prospect with an NFL leg.”

Texas is one of many schools that have spoken to Fera at this point, but the Longhorns also seem to be the most likely destination if he were to transfer.
