Reasons for optimism next year

Not convinced there is a tougher job than Austin.
Maybe not but if you think it's any easier at OU, Bama, Michigan, tOSU, it's not. All those schools expect to win. And their fans are going to turn on you when you don't. The amazing thing is we still feel we belong among that group when quite honestly we don't.

But....Texas is near the top in all-time wins from those years in the early 1900s beating up on the likes of The School For The Blind et al.

Seriously though, if not for DKR, would anyone say Texas is a "Blue Blood" traditional power? Are we, really? I've been second guessing all that the last few years.

The key words in your post are “if not for”. Why would we discount our successes so we could view our program as mediocre? Do you teach at UT?

That's pretty funny. I don't discount those years, of course. Since 1970, Texas has been close several times and succeeded once in reaching The Promised Land of the #1 spot in all polls after all was said and done. Unfortunately for me, I wasn't born until 1969, so I can't revel in this DKR champeenships other than to add them to the one in 2005.

If you think Texas is not mediocre, I'm really happy for you and will celebrate that.

Happy with DKR, Akers, 1998-2009 Brown (except for benching Major in favor of Chris). Very frustrated with Herman because he has the potential to be very successful (see big wins that Brown wouldn’t get), but he screws himself far too often. This season might have been almost perfect if he would simply have benched Ingram before the season started.

The key to next season is getting Jackson to stay . Card is not the answer in Herman's offense !!!!!
I'm curious to see what the offense looks like next season, as the Yurcich offense I've seen appears better suited for a Card style than an Ehlinger, but thinking they adopted more of the Herman given Ehlinger was behind center.

Of course, if the Yurcich offense never appears because the Herman offense reigns supreme, well then I take it back...

Jackson was 4th string, out because of his knee and never took a snap in practice.
Neither would be ideal as they would both be freshman but Card would be the better option.

So you’re telling me we went all-in on a 6-3 season so we are stuck with Thompson as the only reasonable option in 2021 when he’s shown no signs of being a competitive option. Wow. Sounds like Herman gambled his career and lost. Where was the upside to this even if we won the conference this year given that a total drop off in 2021 would get him fired anyway?

Thompson, Card and our new signee. I think we have a walk on. That's our qb room if Sam doesn't return.

Good heavens, how have you possibly seen enough of him to say that? I liked him at the Spring Game, holy smokes that was a long time ago.

My statement is true regardless of how much he’s been played. He hasn’t shown viability. If he scored in the Spring game, it was against our defense :).

We have not. And I did see some improvement from him the last time.
If he gets passed over for Card without even a shot, then he will portal and that would further thin the already thin QB room even more

This is good. As underwhelming as this year's OL recruiting class looks (thus far at least...), last year's OL class was at least an A-. Garth may be the most well-rounded of the bunch, with Karic as the quick-footed athletic LT (a replacement for NFL-bound Cosmi), and Majors and Parr as the interior maulers. Majors is a current starter. Karic may be our starting LT for the bowl with Cosmi gone. If Garth has recovered from his injury, this bodes well for our future OL.

If we do switch to a zone blocking scheme, there are some advantages that come with it. Namely you do not have to have the classical huge physical build of O-linemen, the pure 'power’ types. This state is absolutely chock full of OLs that don’t fit that traditional profile that the NFL drools over, the ones that get the high recruiting service rankings. But these guys can be great prospects for zone programs. And many of them come with that coveted "nasty" streak.

I always remember Dan Neil who came out in 1997 as a center but measured at only 6'2, 288. Despite being a terrific college center, I was worried he might not even get drafted because of the size thing. And, but for the Denver Broncos and their zone scheme, he might not have been taken. They took Neil in the 3rd round and then smartly moved him from C to OG where he became a pulling monster. If you can remember those teams then you can probably recall Neil pulling and running down the sideline as a RB escort. That scheme made almost any RB the top in the league. Denver maximized what Neil offered. He played for them for 8 seasons, 7 as a starter, and even won a Super Bowl with them as the starting RG (the year DEN blew out ATL). This state always has a bunch of this type of slightly undersized OL who can scoot, play with great technique and have that prefect mix of nasty in them

Look, I know it would be something of a concession for us. But right now, the facts are in and they clearly say we are unable to land the top OLs from our own state. Our 2021 OL lass was a disaster in a once in a decade class. We are what are, and it is time to adjust to that reality and do the best we can with what we have.

I've seen 'em both play....In Herman's offense Card will get hurt. Jackson has the ability to win in spite of Herman.
Jackson is not staying if herman remains the coach. Perhaps the new coaching staff would be able to convince him to stay.

With Josh Thompson and D’Shawn Jamison both returning in 2021, we could have a two-deep at CB of all seniors

Fifth-year senior Josh Thompson
Grad Transfer senior Darion Dunn
Fourth-year senior D’Shawn Jamison
Fourth year senior Jalen Green (will probably be moved to diff position)

Here is an article on this if interested With returners and an addition, corner is potentially a strength in 2021 - Inside Texas

They say the NFL was already looking at Dunn Dunn named to Reese's Senior Bowl Watch List - McNeese State University Athletics

Jalen Green is getting in some work at safety. Herman said there will be PT available on the backend of the secondary with Brown and Sterns trying for the NFL.
Montrell Estell is currently working at WR.

Well said...Herman is John Mackovic part 2. He has the same arrogance and has divided the fanbase and team to a certain extent. If he had just benched Ingram on the fumble vs the cockroaches, he would've been in big 12 title game, but he knows it all.

Last night definitely showed the youth on this team is a good reason to have some optimism for next year. Colorado was not good and its not like they were playing the 85 Bears defense but wow does that three headed monster of Thompson, Bijan and Roschon look exciting and with three freshman starting on the OL and getting experience Yurcich is going to have some weapons.

I was just thinking about this.
With all the weapons we have, the new head coach and the probable new OC, though I like Yurcich, are coming into a good situation where they may look brilliant. I'm speaking of course about Thompson, Card, Robinson, Roshon, Whittington and Joshua Moore. And let's not forget Omerie and Jake Smith. Hopefully we will have a wide open offense with good schemes that will let these horses run. Thompson and Robinson are going to cause major headaches for the defense.
So much potential, makes me want to put in an application for the OC. Just sayin.
