Really Rick?

I assume you are objecting to his "best of the Big XII"? I don't think by any stretch that he is trying to say we are the best team in the Big XII. I think he is using the phrase as it is often used, meaning a top tier team from the Big XII vs. a top tier team from the ACC.

So you are a horn fan and dont believe that? I MAY have orange tinted sunglasses, but I'll take our team over Kansas.

Come on. KU has won a national championship and they continuously win the big 12 championship and tournament.

You're taking it wAy too literally. It's a press release. Plus, I think Texas has the better team this year.

I heart Rick Barnes.

I didn't mean to ruffle any feathers over here.

What would you guys think if Mike Leach said the same thing about the Texas Tech football program?

Well, either you are trying to ruffle feathers or you are just completely clueless about UT Basketball. Comparing UT Basketball to Tech Football is quite possibly the worst comparison I've ever heard. I would just quit while you're behind. You haven't stimulated any good conversation about this year's team.

I take his comment 'best of the Big 12' to mean a top tier team playing a top tier team from another conference.

In football, the only analogy that makes sense is Texas or OU that have clearly distinguished themselves as a tier above everyone else in the conference.

In basketball, clearly Kansas would be in the top tier and I suppose you could even argue that they stand alone. But, if you are looking at who is next in line, I think that honor would go to UT, with maybe OU not too far behind.

His statement is fair - regardless of whether you think UT is better than Kansas this year.

What get's me is how you titled this thread," Really Rick?" Don't know about you but I believe we have a team that can beat KU and go to the Final Four.
If you were the head coach wouldn't you say the same? James is back, we have a legit PG in Lucas
and we have 3 freshman who can shoot and score. It's gonna be a Great Year!!!

I give a damn. KU might have the tradition and history in hoops but Rick Barnes has brought this program to an elite level equal to KU. Look at the schedule and you'll know. We play North Carolina, Michigan State, Arkansas and Uconn which is a pretty impressive. About 5-7 years ago most of us were in awe when we scheduled Duke. Those days are over and we can hang and beat anyone
on any court at anytime. Especially KU at home.

Kansas has won the big 12 outright 6 times.
They have tied 3 times. Twice w/ Texas, once w/ OU.
They have won or tied for the big 12 championship 9 of 13 yrs.
They have won the Big 12 tournament 6 times

( I have not researched this part, but I believe they have been to the final four twice since the big 12 started) I have no idea how many sweet 16, great 8 finishes
A national championship.

Texas has won the big 12 outright once.
Texas has tied for the big 12 championship twice. Both w/ KU
Texas has never won the big 12 tourney
Texas played in the final 4 once.
Don’t know how many sweet 16’s or 8’s.

ptownhorn - nice stats, but I not sure what your driving at.

You are posting on a relatively obscure board (UT basketball in August - less than a month before our #2 ranked football team starts it's march to a proable NC game).

Yet. you ask of the 10 posters who bother to click over to the baskeball thread, how our coach could have the audacity to suggest that his basketball team might actually dare to play an ACC team in our home state,

Well, excuse those few of us that actually care about UT basketball to suggest that:

1. UT mght have (admittedly secondary) resume to be considered as one of the best of the Big 12. Again, I'll defer to Kansas, but would argue that UT (and maybe OU) could argue that we've distinguished ourselves as slightly taller than the rest of the dwarves.

2. Texas with the return of Damion and Pittman and a regular homecourt advantage might have a slight advantage over the men from Oz.

To make amends, we will heretofor (by the way I'm not a lawver but have a few in my family) require that any statement about our basketballl team, by ourselves or by our coach, be followed by a kneeling and felatio posturing to the great state of Kansas .

That's it... That's all I meant. To say Texas is the best in the Big 12 in basketball is just wrong.

The only reason I posted article is because I was on the Cowboys website and they were pumping this game for the new stadium. I wonder how many Texas and NC fans will go.

anyway, Rick is just clearly wrong. sorry.

Your point is idiotic, pedantic or otherwise, it is still idiotic.

To call out a coach for this is just ridiculous. Coach Barnes believes that his team this year is the best in the Big 12. They happen to play the defending national champions and the best team in the ACC.

They play the games for a reason and I agree with Barnes.

Texas will be the best in the Big 12 this year.

ok ptownhorn. we get it. if we all go back and look at all college stats since the game of basketball was invented, Kansas has a better history than Texas. Do you REALLY think RB thinks that since the dawn of basketball, Texas has been a better basketball team than Kansas? Or even that he meant that since the dawn of the Big XII that RB thinks Texas has been a better basketball team than Kansas? Really? Do you really think that's what he meant? REALLY?

Yeah, they won a national title - with the aid of academic fraud - D. Arthur - without whom they would not have sniffed the Final Four.

Aren't we among the best of the Big 12 when it comes to basketball...? If so, what's the problem...?
