I have a slightly different take on the subject. He still wants to be the candidate of change but up until this point has nothing new to offer. This allows him to:
1.Shore up his base.
2. Continue to be the candidate of change.
3. Distract from the poor economy.
Unlike some other posters, I think that there are quite a few people that would consider themselves D voters that are not happy with this. Look at the 69-31 margin of victory in NC. I would guess that nearly 20% of those voters were Ds.
This is not a party line issue as much as some others. Certainly more Ds favor gay marriage than Rs but it is also a urban vs rural issue and a young vs old issue. Most of my urban, young, R friends support gay marriage. I do as well.
Long term this issue will be a winner for the Ds.
