RB recruiting situation

i could probably do a post on several of the positions, which the coaches have to make difficult choices in the next few weeks (OL, DB, DE, LB.. ), but RB is getting pretty interesting.. err.. nerve racking perhaps? of the big 4, 1 is committed (williams), and another is not coming to a jr. day (sims). the other 2 have offers, with green being hardly a horn lock and brown being a decent bet at this time.

we've all seen the brown videos. ridiculous. we can and should evolve the offense to fit this kind of talent. heck it wasn't that long ago that we had benson racking up 1000 yard seasons year after year (and.. what.. 9 straight 1000 yd rushers?). despite our good position with him, the developments of the other big 3 are making brown more and more crucial. striking out on all 4 would be devastating in such a deep rb year. ou could get sims and marquez (perhaps the 5th best back in the state) as a slot wr. at this point, it's perhaps even worth rooting for ou to get sims, to give us more chance to get brown. even without sims, the ou depth chart is pretty stout at rb, with calhoun, miller, finch, and clay all around after this year.

thoughts?

so do you know why sims cancelled?
i think this strategy of inviting a few for juniors and not others (who are very good) is not working out cuz it seems sims might have cancelled because he didnt think horns considered him a priority...

Sims has long been considered a Sooner lean. I don't know why he cancelled, but it seems to be between OU and Miami.

supposedly he wasn't feeling the interest from us. and frankly he may be committing to ou during the next jr day.

wonder if we're going to offer lasco now... would not be in the best interest numbers wise (considering the boat load of awesome OL left on the board ughh).

BON is speculating that he probably was told that he wasn't gonna get an offer this weekend so he figured it wasn't worth his time.

So the coaches really need to focus on the remaining two !

I am hoping for Sims and Marquez to come north. We are also recruiting a kid from NJ named Huggins but have not offered yet.

I agree we need Brown (and I believe we will get him). Devastating if we don't? Not really, imo.
Regarding Sims, I believe it is pretty apparent that we told him, or he knows that he is number 3 or 4 on our take list at RB. Couple that with his ou lean and it makes perfect sense. Why waste one another's time?
As for our strategy, I believe it is working just fine. All you have to do is look at the results in recruiting as well as on the field. Don't panic guys, there are some pretty sharp fellows driving this train.

"Turn the perception of our program around" ???? Please, don't do that. It' never been in better shape. Are we ignoring the running back's on campus as well as Shead? Big mistake, imo.

"If we miss on all these good rbs, it's time for a changeup at the rb coach level. Not saying anyone needs to go but perhaps they just aren't in the right positions."

You're kidding, right?!

Maybe I'm wrong but the last 2 "big name" recruits that have graduated are both starting in the NFL. (Benson and Charles). That tells me the coaching is just fine.

man, oh, man, with flowers now in and with what mack said, and mcfarland and bergeron, and, hopefully, a huge continued emphasis on o-line recruiting this year, what i wanna see is brown and green in orange and white.

I heard quite a bit of Mack's press conference today and his comments about the offense and the running game, in my opinion, support those opinions around here that the running game was a problem and that it possibly has affected our ability to land a true franchise running back. For those who insist on saying everything is fine, I believe you either do not get it or are just homers.

First off, I don't see anyone saying "everything is fine" in this discussion of running backs/recruiting. Secondly, if you did indeed listen to Mack, he talked about scheme mostly. Frankly, I believe we did ok running the ball considering we never were serious about it the past two years (don't mistake this for thinking I was satisfied with the running game). We were a passing team, plain and simple. Certainly a team that passes most of the time is not going to attract the best running back recruits, however, I'd say it was more the case of not going after top guys at RB rather than missing on them the past few years.

If having a differing opinion than you (I'm not sure we do) and that makes me a homer, so be it.

All that said, come on down Malcolm Brown!

For the record, Rivals rated McGee a 4*, and the #3 running back in 2006.

I think we should all tap the brakes and see how all these guys perform in a new scheme. Should be interesting!

The thing is that last year we didn't really have a running attack and that killed us against Bama with Colt injured. When VY was here we had a good running attack with Benson and Chales. I don't know what happened last year because we had talented runners and a good offensive line.

Calling my shot:
Whaley for +1,200 in 2010.
He should come in pissed off!!!

With his size. speed, new OL talent coming on board ...
Since I mentioned size 230 sounds good.

I believe Mr. Suh was already in the discussion for a top draft pick..its not like he went from a 3rd rounder to a top 5 pick. The guy is a stud DT and the only thing that game did was broadcast that fact to a much wider audience. We had a good line...just not up to our recent standards or expectations.

dont make the same mistake as Mr Mildren, Sims, and come to play at the big-time University of the state, where you will always be looked at in high regard as Mr Campbell, Benson, etc.---think about your future and your fan base!!

The University of Texas is a wasteland for RBs. Just ask 3 of the top 11 in the NFL this year: R.Williams, C.Benson & J.Charles.

But at this stage it does appear to be Malcolm Brown or bust.

thanks Burnt Orangman.. nobody is saying we suck at recruiting in general or that we haven't recruited good backs. we've just had some rather big misses (some admittedly by the coaches' preference, see calhoun) over the last few years. after a couple of years where our RBs have been not as productive than before, i think it's fair that we would be in good position to land one of 4 major studs this year.

as far as the suh comment, i'm just saying he wasn't considered this monster before tossing our ol around like rag dolls. yeah he was probably top 5, but go back and look at the numbers he put up against the other big 12 ols, and tell me again that our ol last year was comparably good. it might have been "good" the previous year, it hasn't been "great" since the studdard/blalock days.

Our running game was weak last year. The O-line was an issue, but "suck"? Hmm we were 13-1 and frankly had the best team in the country except an ill timed injury that cost us the title game. I know, I know...semantics.

I wouldn't say our OL sucked and would put most of the blame of our running woes on our scheme. The zone read (i.e. run East/West until you find a hole) works great with either Vince at QB or an absolute burner like J.Charles at RB. Unfortunately, we didn't have either. I think we'll continue to miss on the top RBs until we make a committment back to a running game that allows the RB to hit the hole with momentum (i.e. North/South running).
But as someone pointed out, the choices we've made in the recruiting process (Whaley over Michael + not recruiting Calhoun) , plus missing out on Scott have put us where we are. The silver lining to that "problem" is there is probably no better opportunity for a recruit to have a shot at a NC and
have an easier path to the top of the depth chart than here at Texas.
