Rank the QBs in the Mack Brown Era

Beau Trahan ranked way too high above. At least as a quarterback.

We stayed at the same hotel in Mexico he did on his honeymoon. He was loaded and kept forgetting that he'd already introduced himself to me and kept reaching over, shaking my hand and announcing that he was Beau Trahan. Which was fine, because I was so loaded I kept forgetting his name.

I think success at the quarterback position in our system has more to do with who can run for their life the best than any other factor.

1. Vince Young
2. Everyone else

I am so sick of Vince Vince Vince Vince Vince. He left before we won 2 MNC's. That's a big deduction on my scorecard.

1) Major
2) Colt
3) Vince
4) The rest

When Colt McCoy holds basically every Texas passing record next year the only things to keep him from the top of the list might be championships, pick up a couple of conf championships and perhaps an MNC and he is at the top, if he doesnt number 2 is the best he can do even with all the records. For now the starting QB's in the Mack Brown list era goes

VY;
Colt;
Simms/Applewhite Applewhite/Simms (I choose not to participate in that debate);
Mock; and
Walton.

1. VY
2. Simms
3. Major
4. Colt
5. Mock

Colt could move up the list in two years. I'm not getting into the Simms/Applewhite debate any more than I already have by expressing my opinion above.

Lots of really great points on all the QBs mentioned above. While I agree that Colt could ride #1 if he leads a team to his own NC, maybe even just a couple of conf. titles could sub for the same value, combined with his apparent trajectory up the stat and record books - Colt just might be considered the best.

However.

The thing that Vince has that you just can't take away or undervalue. The absolute storybook perfection in which Vince did his thing. He took complete control of the ship, told the whole of Longhorn nation to get behind him, follow him, the magic will follow. So many nationally televised moments of VY simply willing his team to victory. And then. On the brightest stage in recent CF history, a stage so huge and storybook there is wide sentiment across the landscape that it was not just the single greatest performance in the history of college football (ask Keith Jackson), but the game itself is up there as the greatest game ever played - those 2 things in the whole of college football - one man was the conductor

That. is why VY could remain the most untouchable. The visuals alone from that game, the ones we now have labeled in our brains as The Return to Glory, those belong to Vince Young. His transcendence continues far into the future and he simply cannot lose.

Colt McCoy is still such a great storybook Texas QB name, however. And he sure does have a shot... And to think of the shoes filled, in his own way, sure, but damn what a task and he damn sure could pull it off... We'll see.

1. Vince
2. Major
3. Simms
4. Mock

Colt's career isn't finished yet, but if he can win a big 12 championship this year or next, I think he has to move above applewhite.

Some of you are asleep at the wheel, apparently...

Colt is "durable"? He got injured as a Freshman, and had a hangover as a Sophmore. Where is durable?

Colt has only had two years - one almost great year (can't be great if you're "out" two conference games due to injury) and one mediocre year. Without extrapolating forward, to where I EXPECT Colt to be:

VY
Major
Simms
Colt
Mock

I *EXPECT* Colt to finish at #2 on that list, but for now, he doesn't have a complete career and the career he has had has him with two losses to both KSU and Aggy. Nobody else on that list has that.

HoosierHorn, while I disagree with your arrangement of Simms and Applefreckle, I can go with what you're saying on Storybook McCoy. this year is his chance to tip the balanced scale one way or the other with the weight of 3-year starter for The University of Texas, on his way back next year with reloading talent-- ontop of a
promising

and right now wicked group. this year's OU contest could be special, and I mean especially huge in the nation's notice. the other games as well.

Why all the love for VY? That dude was a bust.

Last time I saw him was in 2004 when he laid our first goose egg in 282 games. 8 for 23 passing for 86 yards. Topped it off with a measly 54 yards rushing. First time we'd been shutout in 24 years. Ended the nations longest no shutout streak.

I quit watching after that. Did he ever do anything to redeem himself? We should have gotten Reggie McNeal.

1. #10
2. Major
3. Simms
4. McCoy

I go by performance in big games and in clutch situations. Colt has yet to prove to me he can beat top-10 caliber teams the way Major & Chris could. He'll have several opportunities this year, so we'll see.

1. Chris
2. Adair (we took voice lessons from the same teacher at UT)
3. Colt
4. Chance (because of the unnecessary stretch every time he ran a ball towards the sideline)
5. Nordy (his Baylor Bounce was incredible)

VY cannot be considered in this ranking. He is not a person. He is immortal.

The fact that many are putting Colt McCoy above Chris Simms is insane, and only shows that they are being judged relative to hype and expectations rather than on an absolute basis. Colt could eclipse Simms by the time he leaves but so far all he's delivered are Alamo Bowl and Holiday bowl seasons, and last year was a fairly mediocre QBing job in my opinion. Simms trounced the Aggies and delivered big road wins over K-State and Nebraska back when that actually meant something, along with the aforementioned Cotton Bowl over LSU. Colt had a nice win over OU in 2005 when they had a WR playing QB and another over ASU in the Holiday Bowl, other than that he hasn't delivered many big wins.

Vince
Applewhite
Simms
Colt (still has a chance to move up)
Chance

I put Colt as a Clear #2 as a college QB. Had Simms had comparable running skills and escapability he would have been really terrific. Lasting memory of Simms against Arkansas is watching a DL being blocked pretty well but knocking down Simms with one hand to the back. Meanwhile our rushers had to gang tackle to get Clint Stoerner on the ground. Simms had great size, smarts, accuracy and throwing velocity. But he really had serious athletic limitations with speed, agility, balance and functional strength.
