Rangers at 40 game Mark

40 games in and just about 1/4 of the way to the finish line your Texas Rangers are a league best 26-14. I like to break the season into 10 game stretches and for each of the first four sets the Rangers had winning records going 7-3. 6-4, 6-4 and 7-3.

Darvish has been outstanding and has to be in the top two with Buchholtz for the early season cy young race. The Dutch Oven has been equally outstanding from ERA standpoint and he is a solid number two starter. Ogando was strong today and he has definitely settled in at the three spot giving the Rangers a very strong rotation at the top. Tepesch is making some rookie mistakes and I hold my breath each start but he is doing great as a fill in until Harrison returns. Grimm is even more of a hold your breath starter and with Lewis seemingly rehabbing well I expect to see Colby back in the rotation as soon as they can get him back in a few weeks.

Lance Berkman has been the pickup of the off season (fingers crossed he stays healthy) and between him, Beltre and Cruz the Rangers still have the monster bash capability in any game. Moreland has also been adding to that aspect lately and the offense has been more than just solid. A few injury bugaboos including AJ but Wash is doing a great job managing this lineup.

That said, it is really time for some recognition that Wash is an outstanding manager. He makes some bad decisions from time to time, no doubt, but he gets called out on those without getting equal time credit for all the moves he makes correctly. he has dialed up a great lineup this year and managed a pitching staff outstandingly!

The schadenfreude for our friends in Anaheim is in full effect. they trail KC tonight 8-1 through 3 innings and will likely fall to 15-25, 11 games back of the Rangers. Josh is a stellar .213 for his 25 million and you cant help but laugh at how much the Angels have paid for such a crappy start that could bury them before Weaver makes it back and before they start playing to their potential. They still strike me as biggest threat to Rangers winning the west even more than Oakland so the bigger hole they dig for themselves, the better.

Still a ton of baseball to go with 122 games left to play. In short run I am looking forward to Darvish v. Verlander tomorrow and to getting out to the ballpark in person for the first time Sunday night to see the Rangers in over a year. will be a fun summer in Arlington

Tepesch and Grimm have been the good surprises so far. Most rookie pitchers flame out after one pass through the league but these two have done their job so far. I am not as sold on Ogando as a number three as FWHORN is. In my mind he is barely a 4. However Lewis will be back as the number 3 around the All Star break which should relieve some of the pressure on Ogando and the rookies.

Gentry and Moreland have been the surprises on the offensive side. Enjoy Cruz this season because no way the Rangers resign him since his defense is getting worse.

All in all they are ahead of where I thought they would be at this stage. However all records in the AL West this season are going to be skewed due to the games with the Astros.

Coincidently today USA Today has the following story: Link

Good post and spot on with your observations. To me the most pleasant but not unexpected surprise is Speedy Gentry - I love how he plays / kind of like Murph - hustles, makes things happen and seems to get us a key hit, stolen base or RBI when we really need it. Moreland's bat getting hot has also been a nice surprise.

As for pitching - Yu? Darvish has been wow, what 6-1 and 80 strike outs, leading the league. Tepesch is doing good job. I always worry the bad Ogando is going to return one of these games. Kirkman

I have bashed enough in past so I won't start that again.

Agree Wash has done an outstanding job so far this season!

I'm not sure I'd want the Rangers to let Cruz go. He carries by the far the most potent bat of the current outfielders. I like Gentry and Murphy, but not as everyday starters in positions where big time offensive production is part of the overall job description.

My happy point for the Rangers is the bullpen. Scheppers has been magnificient and Ross and Ortiz are doing really well too. Nathan adds some 9th inning drama, but he has a save for every opportunity so far.
