Ralphie tramples handler

First appearance at Folsom Field for Ralphie V who took over from Ralphie IV. Kinda reminds me of the fiestiness of our very own Bevo XIV.

I know 750 lbs is nothing to sneeze at but I'm always a little surprised when I see the (lack of) size of Ralphie...considering Bevo is, what, 1,500 lbs? However, could you imagine if, instead of Ralphie storming down the sidelines, it was Ralph: a full grown 2,000 lb bull?

It's only a matter of time before the Animal Rights Kooks get Ralphie and Bevo banned from appearing as a mascot.

A real shame because they are two of the great college football traditions.

WOW! That reminds me of the 1985 Texas/SMU game in Texas Stadium. They ran their mustang a little too close to BEVO and he almost charged. I was sitting about 10 rows up in the endzone when it happened. Needless to say, the Silver Spurs were pissed by the incident.

Before the cruddy Championsship game in Dallas, my sisters got to meet and pet Ralphie-ette. Super sweet animal. Too bad this happened and I hope all comes out okay.

I agree that if one day we lose our on the field mascot it would suck.

My dad was a Silver Spur in the early 50s. He told me in his day they used to run Bevo around the field after a touchdown. He said was actually more of trying to direct Bevo while he drug them around.

Among the live sideline mascots these days are dogs (such as UGa, Tennessee, A&M), an eagle (Auburn), a ram (UNC) and, of course, Bevo and Ralphie. Most of the dangerous sideline animal traditions (your cougars and bears) have long since been dropped. Heck, I think BYU's cougar got loose once and killed some pets. It didn't take PETA to get that ended.

Anyway, I can't see animal rights folks successfully getting universities to stop having domesticated animals on the sideline. Bevo hanging out at DKR is hardly a rough life, especially when you consider that many of his brethren are being served on buns in the concession stands.

Oh, give me a home where the buffalo roam
And the deer and the antelope play
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word
And the skies are not cloudy all day

Why would PETA and animal rights people have a problem with Bevo or Ralphie? They are well treated and beloved mascots who live a long and happy life pampered by their handlers. Its industrial farming (see e.g. KFC chicken suppliers) that PETA is currently targeting.

They are just inventing stuff to get mad about. PETA might do something, so we need to be outraged before they even start!

I was on the visiting sideline for a game in Bolder last year. The stadium yello jackets make a mad dash telling everyong on the field to get tight to the wall. From the sidlie to the wall is about 12 feet. I stood near the trailer. Ralphie starts on one side of the stadium and rumbles a big U. When he comes to his trailer, he is huffing and puffing and the handlers are trying to keep up. He stomps the ground pretty hard.
