Watching classic albums on VH1 right now.

First off, I'll say that Brian May makes my want to throw my guitar in the f'ing ditch.
Man, Queen was great. It’s not just how good he is. It’s the phrasing of the solos themselves. Lullabies...

Personally I think they should have done, "News of the World" for the classic album, but I understand.

Hell, just make this a Queen thread.
We haven't had one in a while.

Great, great album. I still remember as an 8 yr old when my oldest brother brought this album home. 1975 was a pretty good year for rock & roll (Kiss - Alive, ZZ Top - Fandango, Pink Floyd - Wish you were here, Springsteen - Born to run)

So true about '75.

Fly By Night
Physical Graffitti
Captain Fantastic
Who By Numbers
Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac
High Voltage
Katy Lied
Toys in the Attic
Venus and Mars

In 75, I remember seeing Queen to Bohemian Rhapsody on Midnight Special. I was in 7th grade and a buddy and I stayed up and recorded it from my little b&w TV onto my little hand held cassette player. We played that thing CONSTANTLY the next day. I have owned the 8-track, 2 copies of the album and now have the CD.

I love May's voice and the 12 string guitar on "'39". I actually bought a 12 string because of that sound. I love the HATE on "Death On Two Legs". Roger Taylor's vocals on "I'm In Love With My Car" and the call and response with May's guitar. Holy ****. I don't know if anyone plays as pure of a note as May does.

Death on Two Legs
The Link

Great song & great lyrics (about their manager that screwed them over.)
The lyrics are always better with the song...

"You suck my blood like a leech
You break the law and you preach
Screw my brain till it hurts
You've taken all my money
And you want more

Misguided old mule with your pig headed rules
With your narrow minded cronies
Who are fools of the first division

Death on two legs
You're tearing me apart
Death on two legs
You've never had a heart of your own

Kill joy bad guy big talking small fry
You're just an old barrow boy
Have you found a new toy to replace me?
Can you face me?
But now you can kiss my *** goodbye

Feel good are you satisfied?
Do you feel like suicide?
(i think you should)
Is your conscience all right
Does it plague you at night?
Do you feel good.....feel good?

You talk like a big business tycoon
You're just a hot air balloon
So no one gives you a damn
You're just an overgrown schoolboy
Let me tan your hide
A dog with disease
You're the king of the 'sleaze'
Put your money where your mouth is
Mister know-all
Was the fin on your back
Part of the deal? (shark)

Death on two legs
You're tearing me apart
Death on two legs
You've never had a heart (you never did) of your own
(right from the start)
Insane you should be put inside
You're a sewer rat decaying in a cesspool of pride
Should be made unemployed
Then make yourself null and void
Make me feel good i feel good"

That Live Aid performance kicks ***.

Along the same lines, if you look at what artists were doing at the time, they were much more profilic, and still able to release fairly consistant material:

Queen
73 Queen
74 Queen II
74 Sheer Heart Attack
75 A Night at the Opera
76 A Day at the Races
77 News of the World
78 Jazz
79 Live Killers
80 The Game

Elton John
71 Madman Across the Water
71 Tumbleweed Connection
72 Honky Chateau
73 Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player
73 Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
74 Caribou
75 Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy
75 Rock of the Westies

"Queen
73 Queen
74 Queen II
74 Sheer Heart Attack
75 A Night at the Opera
76 A Day at the Races
77 News of the World
78 Jazz
79 Live Killers
80 The Game

Elton John
71 Madman Across the Water
71 Tumbleweed Connection
72 Honky Chateau
73 Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player
73 Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
74 Caribou
75 Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy
75 Rock of the Westies"

Can you imagine album runs of this proportion ever happening again.
Not in my lifetime.

I was going to mention Elton John's run in the mid-1970s as well. Chicago also had a strong run of albums in the 1970s. To wit:

Chicago 1970 US #4; UK #6
Chicago III 1971 US #2; UK #9
Chicago at Carnegie Hall 1971 US #3
Chicago V 1972 US #1; UK #24
Chicago VI 1973 US #1
Chicago VII 1974 US #1
Chicago VIII 1975 US #1
Chicago IX - Chicago's Greatest Hits 1975 US #1
Chicago X 1976 US #3; UK #21
Chicago XI 1977 US #6

edit: to say Chicago's strong run in the 1970s, not just mid-1970s.

By the way, "25 or 6 to 4"

great thread, rip. i watched that episode too.

i loved the part when roger taylor was talkin about their vocal harmonies and how they got that "queen sound."

he said, rather than freddie singing the lead, and brian singing a harmony and roger singing a harmony... they actually recorded all 3 of them sining EACH part, and stacked all that.

cool stuff.

i was also glad to hear roger talk about john deacon CHOOSING not to be involved in the music business at all anymore.

until hearing that, i never knew if it was his choice or if he was just getting screwed like john paul jones.

and i'll close by saying the gtr solo on "crazy little thing" is one of my all time favorite solos.

89 great call.

I'm a huge Chicago fan....
Terry Kath, top 3 guitarists

Chicago I - VIII all great albums, except IV (not that great of a live album)

Back to Queen. I think my favorite lead is the lead to, "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon."

IMO, Chicago was never the same after Kath popped his brainmatter playing with a pistol. Kiefer Sutherland's first wife was Terry's daughter, Camelia Kath. Did any of you see them (called Chicago Transit Authority then) open for Jimi in 1968-1969?
Another thing about Freddie Mercury that many don't realize: he was an incredible
piano player.
