I didn't like it that much. Regardless if it's a filler type movie and a continuation for the next one I thought it could've had more substance to the plot. The shaky-cam thing also got to me, over used a bit much I thought.

SPOILER TALK
Loco, I think the coup was sort of important for the reason you allude to. It is part of the evil organization they are just learning about. It was with him following people and being on the trail that he uncovered names and faces of people. This gives them momentum and info for future battles.
This ruffles them, he thwarted them and made them uneasy. This is a disruption in plans and they have lost two people in thier network, big players that is.
So whle the coup was not all that important, what they got was majorly so.
I think Pepper's analysis was pretty acurate. I really liked it, because I understood that is part of an ongoing plot. I did feel like I wanted more resolution, but that's because I knew they had to be continuing the story and I jsut wanted more.
Someone asked if this is a restart and it is, because in the first one, M tells Bond she regretted making him a 00 so quickly. Right then and there you knew this was not Connery or Moore, etc continuation. This was a completely fresh start to the Bond world. I've never read any of the books, but I got a sense that this is probably what was envisioned when the books were first written.
And I guess I'll get shat on for this, but I grew up with Moore, so he's been my favorite Bond. Yes some of the stuff was hokey, but come on...Moonraker, For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy? Those are GREAT movies.
I finally caught this movie before it left the theaters. I thought Casino Royale was damn near brilliant in retooling the franchise and getting bond back to his killer roots.
Quantum disappointed me. I don't mind some disorientation in a frenzied action sequence because it reflects something of the emotion of a fight or a chase down an unknown road. In this movie, you often had trouble telling who was who and what was going on. In the scaffolding sequence, I couldn't tell who was reaching for which gun. That's not controlled disorientation of the audience, that's bad filmmaking.
Also, the plot was a little to obscure. I know Bond is running down a new "Spectre" type organization, and I like the idea. That said, maybe the movie should have lost an action sequence and provided a sequence (with suspense) that illuminates the plot a little more.
I think the motivation of the girl was also something of a distraction and not really necessary to the overall movie.
Overall, the movie was not a POS, but it was very disappointing after Casino Royale. Great song by Jack White at the beginning.
I still look forward to the next installment. The new filmmakers are making so many good moves that I expect they'll get the next one right.
