QB Max Wittek Visit

What Horns11 said.

It's not a lovefest, as much as a stopgap if Ash fails to make a full recovery, or has problems during the season.

Most likely a better alternative than Swoopes based on his spring game, or a true freshman in Heard.

I don't disagree with you guys that he's likely a better option than Swoopes at the moment. Marginally at best though. Not sure if my viewpoint will remain that way after summer practices when the focus has shifted from basic training to the players being prepared to start the football season. But even if it's the case I just don't see Wittek a definitively better option enough to court him heavily, with much of the fanbase seemingly on the edge of their chair hoping he saves us at the back-up spot. Sure I'd like to have another non-Freshman arm in the mix, but I'll live if he or we don't make it happen. Wittek hasn't shown anything special to earn him the clout he's getting.

Brad, I agree that Wittek is not the end-all to the QB situation and I had mentioned previously (may be another thread) that his stats are not off the charts but considering the Horn situation, Wittek was the best, most likely option at the time. There was little info available to many of us about any other potential options and, with Strong & staff being new, it wasn't obvious that many transfer possibilities were interested in coming in to an as yet undefined offense. Add to this that the newcomer might never start if Ash stays healthy and/or Swoopes/Heard develop as hoped. It doesn't seem too enticing to me unless a guy just really wants to add UT to his resume and academic accomplishments.

I am not sold on anybody but I want another warm arm in the fold.

According to KVET 1300 he is not coming to Texas or Hawaii because he is not going to complete his undergrad degree in time.

Confirmed by NBC Sports.

Wow.... after all the DRAMA around this prospect:

I don't know if he would have been the next Joe Montana, but I was really hoping he would enroll at Texas. Our qb situation is precarious, with little experience after Ash, who as we know could go down at any time.
Wittek would have been a solid back-up, and could easily have been starting at some point during the upcoming season. This is a real disappointment.

It feels to me like Heard may end up being our best option at QB. I realize that a true freshman at qb will likely lead to a long season, but if Ash struggles with health, I don't see another alternative.

Maybe not. The last two really good QBs we had both started as Freshman. I mean, the potential is certainly there for a long season but on the other hand, I really like Heard and he just might end up being another Freshman signal caller that can be great for us.

You never know.

ABQC...,
If the two freshmen QBs to which you are relating are Colt McCoy and VYoung, then I think that these two started
after a redshirt year. They did not start (as Heard might) as a raw freshman who has not had a year to mature and develop.

What I have gathered through a third party is that JH is like nails when the pressure is on -- meaning he comes
through under big game conditions. Swoopes has trouble doing this. However, JH will not pickup the the reads
quickly like the QB is required in the type of WCO style that Watson implements. It will take him time to learn the
recognition of all the options of how the receivers are deployed. If JH starts next season, you will see
Watson scale back the offense to what -- I do not know.

With both Heard and Swoopes as the only backup to Ash, you will not see exactly the type of offense that you
saw at Louisville under Bridgewater in his last two years. A lot will depend upon what Wickline thinks as his OL
capabilitlies. If the running backs can remain healthy, you will probably see a running play % more than what the UT
coaches would want. If that is the case, then Wickline will be the play caller probably to a large degree.

With a healthy Ash we will be in good shape provided the backups get some playing time throughout the year just in case.

Ash's health is critical. Without him in every game, this could become a very frustrating season.

Strong says Ash will be healthy and ready to go in July. I trust Strong's word and the doctors he speaks with regularly on the subject. We start summer practice with a healthy Ash, that's all I know. Strong likes Ash a lot as a player and his work ethic. Ash can lead us just fine to win plenty of ballgames. Anything else is speculation.
