Postal Service

You didn't take it literally. That's the problem.

You're begging the question because you assume that govt mail service to underserved rural areas is both a waste and unnecessary.

So... why do you think that? That is your conclusion; what are your reasons?

Again I ask, for the third or fourth time: what is the function of govt?

Are you saying that Fedex and UPS don't ship to rural areas and that is why they are able to make profit?

Doesn't seem true to me. People in rural areas by necessity need more things shipped to them since stores aren't as available.

UPS and FedEx and some others would jump at the chance to bid for the US mail delivery contract. The govt can specify the contract any way they like to make sure everyone gets adequate mail service.

The real reason this will never happen is that the unions would get killed in this deal. They will never stand for it.

Someone asked the question, "why can't the USPS turn profit within a free market while UPS and Fedex can". You answered, "think of a reason". He said because of unions' effects on labor cost/productivity. You said:

I guess communicating electronically is impossible, therefore, we need the federal government to subsidize the manual sending of letters.

Reply with some other Satchellesque question.

As a side note, I met a guy who started a company lately called Outbox which has all your paper mail sent to them, takes digital photos of it and sends the file to you in formats which can be seen with computers or mobile devices.

This service could actually help the USPS by decreasing the cost of mailing shipments since they all go to one place or it could hurt it by cutting out the middle man (the US post office) some day. I'll be keeping an eye on it.

I literally receive ZERO useful mail from USPS. Its all wasteful junk mail and ads. Where are all the environmentalists complaining about the massive paper waste enabled by USPS?

Should be really interesting today - I've been out of town for almost three weeks and put a stop on my mail. So today at some point, I will go down to the USPS to pick up my stack of mail. I'm putting the over-under on individual pieces of mail at around 40, of which around 5-6 will be bills which I already receive or can access online. At least three will be mail disguised as official government documents but will in reality be a pitch to sell me a car warranty or something. I anticipate opening between one and four pieces of mail out of the entire stack, and not a single one will be anything that I needed.

Should be a fun exercize...

I'm not one to complain about the postal service. I think it's an amazing level of service for the price. 45 cents from my front mailbox to a friend in rural New Mexico. The service accomplishes all this, despite operating under rules mandated by Congress. How productive would you be with Congress and their lobbyist cronies (not all friendly to your operations) setting the rules?
