Postal Service

If there was ever an example of how neither party will ever take debt reduction seriously, this was it.

The Post office is dead as a business model. And yet both parties approved the respirator.

It would be very easy to logistically handle alternating delivery days and thereby carving 30% of the branches out within a couple of years.

Reduces the workforce, reduces the pension requirements, etc.

Most of us wouldn't even notice it. I get all my mail on M/W/F instead of M-S. I'm delayed 24 hrs on a few pieces of mail.

And the carrier that hits my neighborhood on MWF can use his time and his truck to hit the other subdivision on T/TH/S.

we really really need to throw all the incumbents out and start over with some people that really want to make some reductions.

We'll be Greece before you know it.

My thought was to gradually start reducing the days of service until the numbers look right. They should also look into selling advertising on their trucks like many city and school busses.

They could offer the special concierge service of putting the junk mail in the round file for you! Capital idea!

I was mailed an invitation to a shower right before Thanksgiving. I got it Saturday because the address read 8013 instead of 8103. The incorrect address is five houses from us. Five months to get here? Par for the USPS. Almost any company could do better. We need to privitize them.

Not to vigorously defend the USPS, but most of you don't really seem to be aware of the problems it faces. Is the USPS dead as a "business model"? Please tell us why.

Of course the USPS is not a business model. It is a business, not a model.

To say the USPS is "dead as a business model" means that the underlying business/operational dynamics of the entity are not viable. It does not mean that the USPS is itself a "model". No businesses or government organizations are "models': they operate under various assumptions promulgated by various models.

Now that we've got the remedial section of the class covered, are you aware of the congressional requirements regarding pension/labor costs? What does the USPS look like if they were able to record their pension costs similar to other companies? Hint: they would be significantly better.

But the USPS is an attractive target for knee-jerk complainers. Yes, some stations need to be closed. Yes, there are efficiencies that need to be effected. But it is not dead as a business model.

I don't know where you're going with this. But then, I don't think you know, either.

Please define your thesis more precisely. Differentiating between a free-market alternative vs. a need for postal service in the digital age would be a nice start.

But if there is no role for a govt agency to provide mail service to outlying areas, then what is the role of govt?

Couple of quick thoughts:

1) How about rural areas pay for whatever service they want?
2) Have you had the opportunity to visit the post office lately? You will find the slowest, least efficient service of your life.

I went to the local post office for help with my passport yesterday. I thought they were fairly efficient. Certainly it was better than going to the federal building. Perhaps this is one good use for this elaborate infrastructure. Let the post office work on more government services.

Fed Ex vs. USPS

Fed Ex delivers to us daily and before 10:30am, they also come by at 1:00pm and again before 5:00pm.

They deliver more and pickup more than the USPS drops off every day and they make money, and everything they deliver is relevant to our business. The market dictates the price that FED Ex can charge and they are checked by UPS, as they do almost the same things as Fed Ex and deliver more than the USPS does on a daily basis as well.

Free market and competition makes them profitable, why can't the same be done with the USPS monopoly ownership of the residential market?

Other than politics and protecting the liberal base of union workers, can't think of much more than that.....maybe your all knowing self can help my little brain.....

Yes, the USPS, for many, exists primarily as a vehicle to deliver junk mail.

Should a govt agency take ads, though? Does UPS take ads from other businesses and place them on their truck?

Perham, welcome to 2012. We have new fangled electronic things called the internet and email. The Government's responsibility does not include wasting taxpayer dollars on unnecessary services. Want the government to transport your paper document? Pay the actual cost yourself, but do not make me pay for it when I can send it via email.

Sorry if I lumped all post offices in the same bucket. My post office has very poor service and long lines. Workers look at lines, put up their "not in service" signs and walk away.

You are right. I am too stupid to recognize when the government is wasting tax dollars. Suddenly, I like what the Left tells me. I am closing my business today. When do the checks start flowing in?

My question of whether you understand what "begging the question" means was serious. Evidently you do not. Many do not, for what it's worth.

If you did understand that phrase you would understand my point. I am not going to say that you're too stupid to recognize this. I don't need to.

So, if you care, learn what "begging the question" means, then see why your above post is worthless.

There is so much poor reasoning here. People don't even understand the difference between conclusions and reasoning.
